    thanks for the inspiration and instruction. used your method of taping and wet removal to great effect (used to correct my horrible first attempt). well done on the presentation. the goldilocks approach; not too much, not too little, just right

    I had the same on my last car (jag XF), no amount of polishing would improve it and now I know the reason why!
    My car is still in good shape wondering if a ceramic coating may prolong the shine for a little longer, I may give it a go.
    Those restoring classics are always looking to avoid a the cost of a re-chrome, I did see a chrome paint that goes on with a brush and looks really good and is really hard wearing. This could be an option if you wanted to keep it origional.

    This patina actually does polish, I used Turtle Wax metal polish on my F11 and it's like new now.

    I had a front door repaired and resprayed by BMW. Bodyshop said the weatherstrip (mine are shadowline) had to come off to respray the door outer skin. They said pulling off the weatherstrips is virtually impossible to do without bending them and ruining them so new ones are needed. So good move not trying to lever of your chrome ones.

    My 12 year old car trim is still fine. I believe its acidic TFR that burns the ally, especially those used at car washes etc

    Looks a nice job. I'll be doing my F11 once BMW have done the warranty repaint on the doors. How many tins of paint do you think it needs? I'm pricing it up against wrapping them with vinyl

    • @Nut_Job.
      @Nut_Job.  Před 4 lety +1

      I’d say all the window trims can be done with 2 aerosol cans. I’m terrible at vinyl wrapping, so thought I’d try rubber paint

    • @Nut_Job.
      @Nut_Job.  Před 4 lety

      I didn’t actually paint mine (they were always matt black). I looked at removing them before... I think there’s about 3 or 4 bolts which are hidden by the interior headliner. If I was painting them I’d try to remove them because I think it would be more difficult on the car.

    • @Nut_Job.
      @Nut_Job.  Před 4 lety

      Once you’ve done about 3 coats you’ve usually got solid coverage, but you really need enough material down so that it will eventually peel off properly. I was looking for a decent ‘wet edge’ so that I could peel it off and leave a tidy line.

    Besides a good clean and degrease was there any other steps you needed to do before applying the black spray.. ie rubbing it all down to achieve a good bond with the new paint…???

    • @Nut_Job.
      @Nut_Job.  Před 2 lety

      No, it’ll stick quite well to a clean surface. It’s completely removable, but it’s worth having a practice using it somewhere else first. More layers are better & warm the can in a bucket of warm water first so that you get a fine spray (less spatter blobs).

  • @Mark333032

    Nice job Nut Job. BMW term this 'shadowline' trim and is usually a no cost option when specifying the car. I agree it looks far better than chrome and won't weather. An alternative way of achieving the same look is to get the trim wrapped. I had my 6 series done including the kidney grill surrounds for £130. On a separate issue, would you delete the music while you are speaking please? Although it is at super low volume, somehow that makes it rather distracting (for me anyway). I would rather be listening to you! Thanks

    Hi mate, have you had any issues in peeling/scabbing since install... I did this on my E61 but it didn't last long... Want to do my F11 ex police car but don't wanna do all that masking to need it redone in 3 months 🤷🏻‍♂️

    • @Nut_Job.
      @Nut_Job.  Před 4 lety +1

      Mines holding up just fine. Perhaps try cleaning/prepping the surfaces a bit more before applying it? I cleaned it with soapy water & then with alcohol to ensure it sticks well 👍

    10 months on, how is the blacked out chrome trim holding up on the F11? Thinking of doing this on mine and like your video explaining how.

    • @Nut_Job.
      @Nut_Job.  Před 3 lety

      It’s held up completely fine. The great thing with these rubber paints is that you can always touch-up if it were damaged. When you spray onto old rubber paint it re-liquifies and sets again 👍

    How Long did it last ? Before it had to be re done ?

    • @Nut_Job.
      @Nut_Job.  Před 2 lety

      I actually never had to redo it. I got rid of the car approximately 12-18mths after doing this, so it held up pretty well. I suspect it might not last so well in warmer countries, but in the U.K. it did very well.

    I would probably just take the entire trim off as putty no masking tape and papers seems more of a daunting task 😀

    • @Nut_Job.
      @Nut_Job.  Před 4 lety +1

      I tried removing them first, but it is a bit more work than I thought at first...

  • @mrboyban
    @mrboyban Před 3 lety

    I advise you to remove all the trim in order to paint it.
    The aerosol spray paint is really bad for the weather strip rubber, which will create cracks overtime and lead you to spend a lot more money than you would expect by replacing it.

    • @Nut_Job.
      @Nut_Job.  Před 3 lety

      This video shows the use of Plastidip, which is a liquid rubber coating not a ‘paint’ really. I can’t see it causing the rubber seals to crack, although I’ll stand corrected if someone can show me that this is true. Removing the trim was what I tried first, but it’s almost impossible (IMO) to remove without causing damage to the trim - this is why I chose to spray it in-situ.

    I done some dechroming on my old 530d e60 (as it wasn't an msport)
    It looked fine to start off with but after a few thousand miles of motorway driving especially the front grill started to look a bit shabby with bits of black chipping off and really drives the price down when selling the vehicle

    @ricardo82 Před 4 lety

    Doesn’t look as good as high gloss shadow line on m sport trim but I understand what your doing and reasons for getting the ex police car fair play keep the videos coming just don’t add any M badges 😉

    • @Nut_Job.
      @Nut_Job.  Před 4 lety +1

      In general I agree about not badging something that it’s not. But the whole “M Performance” and “AMG” situation makes a mockery of it these days... any old person who buys a Merc with some ‘styling pack’ now thinks it’s an AMG because there’s a badge on the car... and probably the same with BMW. Unless it’s a ‘proper’ performance car, it shouldn’t have the badge in my opinion - it devalues the the high-end cars name 😤
