Really surprised you don't go through each number (1-9) at the end of your band/stack scan - that way you easily spot stuff like the 1 in box 1. That said you've taught me a lot so cheers and hope you're feeling better

I do the same. I'm not as good at spotting crossing and such, so I rely on at least one brute-force traversal of corner-marks.

Rangst actually scans the grid in a specific pattern, not only looking for singles but other useful info. I'm very bad at seeing singles, I go 1-9 just looking for singles and corner marking. I say: I'm NOT scanning the grid like Rangst, I'm just placing singles. After that's done I follow his bands scanning method, looking for geometry etc.

@@calpurniabruchi5742 Understood. The approach that Rangsk follows works well for him. I'm not as good at spotting things that way, and so I follow a pattern similar to what I think you're suggesting -- I start by adding corner-marks (although I never mark more than 2 in a box) using a brute-force traversal of each digit. Any singles fall out of that traversal. His way is very fast, my approach is much slower. I also tend to look for occurrences of the "NYT Trick" as my first step in a given puzzle.

In my experience, after my first pass 90% of the time going through each number wastes 5+ minutes and I find nothing of value. I generally find what's needed in the first pass. In this case I did not but it was a pretty blatant oversight, not something I'd want to add a per digit scanning step to resolve. Going box by box again accomplishes the same thing but more efficiently.

@@Rangsk Indeed! You often see things that mere mortals do not. :) I agree with you, and I'm slowly evolving towards your approach as my scanning skills improve.

Please do the Jun 26 medium solve, it's way harder than the "hard" puzzle today.

Tend to agree.... There's one pointing that resolves the entire puzzle but I didn't see it and was totally stuck for a while.
