    Cherry-head tortoises can eat a variety of foods, but mushrooms are not ideal for them. While small amounts of mushrooms are not necessarily harmful, they don’t provide much nutritional benefit and can sometimes be difficult for tortoises to digest.

      Hey thanks for the comment. I definitely agree with you that it is not a main staple of their diet. That being said it is definitely something they seek out and have in their natural environment. So providing them an occasional mushroom isn’t going to hurt anything

    Wow I totally didn't know you can feed your rf tortoise fish food + cat food

    • @alternateaquatics
      @alternateaquatics  Před 2 měsíci

      Yup they need to have some protein in their diet. Just make sure it’s high quality grain free cat food and don’t over do it. You can also give them worms, dried crickets etc
      I catch mine eating the pillbugs and slugs living in their enclosure when they get the opportunity

      @@alternateaquatics does it matter what type of high protein fish food. I got Betta fish food & normal fish flakes

      @alternateaquatics  Před 2 měsíci +1

      I would go with the flakes

    This video is pretty great. The apple seed thing, I think is because of small amounts of cyanide in the seeds. Keep in mind that my sources was a GI Joe cartoon, so I could just be a moron.

    It's not ideal to feed baby Red-footed tortoises high-protein cat food. Their diet should primarily consist of vegetables, fruits, and some high-fiber plant material. Cat food is too high in protein and can lead to health issues such as shell deformities and organ damage.
    Instead, you can offer a mix of leafy greens, fruits, and occasionally some insects or worms for protein. For a more balanced diet, consider offering a commercial tortoise food formulated specifically for their needs, which should have the right balance of nutrients for healthy growth. (chatgpt)

      I agree with most of that, however if you’re going grain free high protein once a month it’s is a very good alternative for people who don’t have access to worms etc. that being said I’m sure it is a better option but not providing them any protein will be a definite issue as it is 100% a requirement in their diet. Thanks for your comment!
