I was surprised to find that this video didn't have someone who had done timestamps yet. I think I knew about Tiamat before I knew of just about any other of the Evil Gods in D&D, she is legitimately that classic. Definitely check out AJ's Bahumat video if you enjoyed this content, subscribe if you haven't already, and see you all next time.

@@wherewiiwentwrong It actually went kinda well in the end! We were all level 20 and prepared for a fight to basically win her respect over for my character to then do the proposal. He'd been a very loyal servant up until that point and had a grand vision of creating a nation of dragons with her aid so chromatics could have somewhere to live where they weren't hunted. The battle was by no means easy and we had several go down, but thanks to our teamwork we eventually swung a victory. I made the proposal to her with the ring successfully, and then me with my other cultists formed a new Wyrmspeaker council under her to go about enacting my dragon nation plan. In the campaign epilogue, we were successful in doing so, carving out a territory near some mountains for us to settle down and start building in. And thus the nation of Scalinkirr was born! And the story of Kilmash Krenkus came to a close, as the first Dragonfather of the new nation.

I play as a red Dragonborn Sorcerer who's clan gives worship to Tiamat. She is incredibly passionate and prone to anger, with which once she's broken bad will set things on fire in a hissy fit. Though she is quite useful to the party and is not very hostile when calmed down, she tends to command a bit of respect from NPC's who talk to her. Very fun to role play.
One thing the party doesn't like about her (other than being Neutral Evil) is that she tends to covet and horde any gold she gets her clutches on and she has been caught a few times performing a personal version of "The Tything" when she is silently holding clawfuls of gold over a lit candle silently and waiting for it to disappear. It's only worked once so far but when it did it was an awesome "Bless" spell that the DM gave her after rolling the percentile dice. The way he does it, the more gold I offer to Tiamat, the better the chance for the percentile.
So far she's convinced the two party paladins not to attack her because of persuasion and a score of beneficial things she has done for the party. But I think I'm on borrowed time.
And yes, she's slept with the Bard once too. Not very proud about that one but hey, it was cold outside and Bard "Needed warmth", which I rolled a "1" for as far as persuasion/insight goes!

Essentially you start out as a Deity , then you go backwards in time on each level starting a new adventure each time. Until you see your own origin based upon your actions the story of your origin changes based upon your actions as a deity showing who you are based upon how you acted in the origin.

  • @elricengquist9989
    @elricengquist9989 Před 6 lety +3

    Great informative vid.
I always liked the idea she has a hive mind, but that each head is almost like a distilled part of her personality, and that is how kinda the extreme personalities of her children come into being thru. Though i always also liked to play her as unknown to her children, and even other Dragon kind via her assuming a different god-personas suited to her worshippers an using that head alone to interact with them. Though in a story-line in which she is not banished, I could see maybe she was sundered into five dragon-aspects of her divinity an seek to be merged back into her true form, maybe even with her sundered form being sealed/pinned into specific places that she needs worshippers to help unseal/unbind before being able to become whole again (maybe why she created her five chromatic breeds of dragons)..
THough in the Cult of Tiamat I like to use the idea of the hierarchy of chromatic dragons for how they structure themselves, with the top priest/priestess alone using a similar style of combining all five colors. So kinda like in ways that a kingdom/area would be divided into five (maybe more) zones that are not equally divided among the five head dragon-priests/priestesses, which than would directly report to the high-priest/priestess or chromatic priest/priestess.

That is to say, Say a Githyanki sworn to her becomes a full blown Vampire, Would she reject them? What about one of her direct creations, like a Red Dragon? (Though I suppose Fang and Gray dragons could help answer that in one way or another)

Ok, I didn't hear you mention the fact that Tiamat is Io's daughter. (Someone correct me if I'm wrong about him mentioning it) and she didn't kill her brother, she killed Io's pet and blamed her brother, Bahamut, simply because she was jealous and believed that Io loved Bahamut more than her.
This was untrue, as Io loves all of his children equally, and had tolerated Tiamat's scheming, proud of her intellect and ingenuity.
However, that day, Io saw through her machinations and banished Tiamat from his house in the Outlands. Bahamut, seeing his sister for what she truly is, decided to dedicated his life to being her antithesis. Where as Tiamat embodies evil, is the Queen of all Evil Dragonkind, scheming and plotting akin to Lolth; Bahamut is the Platinum Godking of all Good Dragonkind. Bahamut embodies wisdom, the North wind, and is the adoptive father to all Dragonborn.
Tiamat is NOT a demon, devil, fiend or any other creature from the Lower Planes. Tiamat is a goddess. A Lesser Deity of Divine Rank 10 (as of D&D 3.5e Deities and Demigods supplement Pg. 93) However, this is directly following both her an Bahamut's reduction in Divine rank for their fighting on the Prime Material plane.
Since then, both Bahamut and Tiamat have been restored to their original place as Intermediate Deities (Rank 11-15), however, neither of them are allowed on the Prime Material Plane in their natural forms. Tiamat gets around this by flooding Faerun with evil dragonkind, and building up her influence, indirectly inhabiting the Prime Material Plane. Bahamut gets around this by travelling as a hermit.
If ever you meet an old, bald hermit carrying a gnarled oaken staff, surrounded by seven yellow canaries on your journeys throughout Faerun, I suggest you pay the old man respect, for you are in the presence of the Platinum Godking and his 7 Celestial Gold Great Wyrm Dragons.

    • @Oskanwhitchfather
      @Oskanwhitchfather Před 5 lety

Ok, this needs a little explaining... See, Io created the first dragons, and many dragon deities, all of which are his children. There are Bahamut and Tiamat, obviously, but their siblings include: Aasterinian, Chronepsis, Garyx, Lendys, and Tamara to name a few.
After he had created the others, Io set out to create a child that embodied all the aspects of Chromatic Dragonkind, but would hopefully rise above the limitations of the Chromatics, hoping she would be a fine ruler for them, without being wicked at heart herself. And so Tiamat came into being.
At first, Io was sure he succeeded, and so, spurned by his apparent success, Io created a ruler for the Metallic Dragons. One that he hoped would be as impartial as Tiamat was, so that they could rule over all of Dragonkind impartially.
And at first, this is how it was.
However, Tiamat was just as dark and twisted as the Chromatics over which she held dominion...
Tiamat grew jealous of Bahamut and her other siblings, wanting all of Io's affection for herself. And so she plotted and schemed to gain more of Io's affection.
However, for all of Tiamat's schemes, and for as proud of her a Io was for showing such a remarkable intellect, she never could take more of his love than her siblings received, and this infuriated the Chromatic Queen. She despised Bahamut most of all, as he ruled the Metallic Dragons, those directly in opposition of her children. Not only did Tiamat attempt, on multiple occasions, to kill Bahamut, but one day she hatched a plan to finally get Bahamut banished from Io's house. She slaughtered Io's favorite pet, leaving both the blood and the corpse near Bahamut's sleeping form (and it the case of the blood, all over him).
Tiamat called out for Io, claiming Bahamut the guilty party, and Io saw through her deception. Saddened and ashamed that she would do something so evil and twisted, Io banished Tiamat from his house, and his very realm, casting her down into the pits of Ba'ator.
Bahamut, seeing Tiamat for what she was, the embodiment of all the shortcomings of the Evil Dragons, decided to leave Io's house and rule the Good Dragonkind from Mt. Celestia, and Io weeped that day, for he had lost both of his children. One to Evil, and the other to Good.
From that day, Bahamut and Tiamat have ever been the bitterest of enemies. Tiamat scheming to take Bahamut's life, and Bahamut doing everything in his power to check her influence in Aber-Toril. This clashing of Dragon Gods came to a head in the Dragonfall War, and has, in recent years, been... almost peaceful.
Tiamat still plots, creating more and more Chromatic Dragons, Dragon Chimeras, and other evil draconic abominations. To combat this, Bahamut began recruiting mortals to help him. He sent out a call, and those who answered his call became his adoptive children, the Dragonborn. But, the tale of the Dragonborn, and more specifically, the first Dragonborn, the Bard Marlow Rodan, is a tale for another time...

Like would 1E Tiamat still be Endgame boss level against a 5E party at the same level you'd expect a 1E party to be facing 1E Tiamat back in the day?

@@AJPickett Thanks. I recall checking out the stats to alot of high tier 1E bosses and thinking their HP seemed really low.
I figured this was because for the time those were considered high HP for bosses and a decent mid-level 5E team could blow through that easily.
Hardly something a high-level 5E team would struggle with. But maybe in most cases the way AC and resistances/immunities were calculated back in 1E made up for the seemingly low HP.
For example in 1E you can decap Tiamat's heads with 16 dmg each and if you inflict 48 damage to her body you banish her to Hell.
Having 128 HP total 1E Tiamat has incredibly low HP for a boss from my 5E perspective. In 5E Tiamat has 600+ HP. Putting her 1E HP to shame.

Of course, Tiamat has all of these traits at once, but players might be able to read her mood depending on which head is doing the talking.

AJ, Tiamat does have a stat block in the 5E book Rise of Tiamat. While it’s possible to prevent the summoning ritual and keep Her from entering the world, it is also possible to fight Her. And she’s a rightfully hard fight. The book explicitly tells the DM to play Her ruthlessly, because anything less would undermine the entire adventure. And yes, it’s very likely that the fight will end in a TPK, but that’s okay; that just means the DM can expand on that and start a new campaign in which Tiamat has taken over, and now new adventurers need to figure out how to end this Tyranny of Dragons.

Fun Fact: Tiamat is technically in the Bible.

    • @jrrollins84

Tiamat has been claimed to be cognate with Northwest Semitic word tehom (תהום) ("the deeps, abyss"), in the Book of Genesis 1:2.

You failed to mention her METAL origin...Io was fighting the primordial known only as the Lord of Terror, until he gets *CUT IN HALF* But at that point, he just isn't dead, no, it just breaks apart into Bahamut and Tiamat. Who kill him.

Thats the thing with some deities, they exist on multiple planes of existence, so, Tiamat and Bahamut may well have more than one origin, in different dimensions, parallel realities, on ascension to divine status, these entities combine into a pan dimensional super being. So yeah, she still has the gnarly origin via Adamantine primordial god slayer axe.. that totally happened.

AJ Pickett i love it when the lore supercedes its own contradictions to become even more incomprihensible and unsermountable than before.

It makes sense to me. Beings as powerful as deities completely bypass simple limits like space and time. As soon as they exist, they can do anything, including rewriting their own origin story. As crazy as that sounds.

if her heads talk to each other like we can talk to ourself then getting them to argue among each other would not break them all being one her. we can get into arguments with ourself if we can truly see reasons for both sides. with her it's just more visual.

I have this idea for a scenario with Tiamat in _Baldur's Gate Descent Into Avernus_ that I may or may not have posted in one of your other videos, but here it is again:
Party is cruising along in one of their infernal war machines when Tiamat shows up on one of her regular jaunts around Avernus, and catches up to them. But she's not in the mood to kill them, and instead demands them to entertain her because she's bored - probably using the skills the party has. For example, she might demand a bard come up with a short ballad for her on the spot, or a cleric come up with a prayer dedicated to her. If their efforts please her, and especially if they cooperated with the dragon cultists back in Baldur's Gate, Tiamat says she might do them a small favor down the line if it piques her interest. If the PCs fail to amuse her, attack her, or run away, she leaves in disgust and nothing more comes of it.
Those who succeed in amusing the Dragon Queen can get some surprisingly significant leverage in dealing with her and her servants in two ways:
    1. If the PCs dealing with Arkhan the Cruel to get the reliquary of Tiamat's blood for Uldrak, the empyrean-turned-spine devil to spill, she will force Arkhan to trade the reliquary for the _orb of dragonkind_ without having to sacrifice a celestial ally such as Lulu or Mooncolor the unicorn. She might even mention that Arkhan, while a useful servant, is ultimately expendable, and the _Hand of Vecna_ would occupy a prime space in her hoard if he should perish.
    2. If the PCs meet Arkhan to try to convince Tiamat to shatter the chains holding the Companion, she will ask for less in return.

Currently playing a paladin of Tiamat, oath of teachery. He isn't
exactly faithful, as he believes his actions follow the example set by Tiamat (but in a much more cunning way). He's a gifted, extremely egoist manipulator who grew up with a dwarf.
