These were all lovely white paint suggestions for dark gray roofs….I would love to see a white paint suggestion for tan or brown roofs….I guess they could be the same except all would have to have a warm or very neutral undertone.

Very helpful overview. May I ask which white you’d suggest for an east facing house with black trim? Would Seapearl be too dark? Also, are the lower LRV whites easier to keep clean vs the brighter whites? Thanks.

What would recommend for a home that is not shaded, gets full sun during the Spring/Summer months, and little to no sun in the Winter (cloudy/gray)? The home is a traditional 1890's Farmhouse. Also, would you stay with a white trim or go a tinge darker around windows, ect. The window sills and mullions are white. Thank you in advance.

What SW color trim would you recommend for a small house painted with White Duck?
This has been very helpful. We are finally repainting our FOUR unit townhouse, and as HOA President, I want everyone to be pleased with the choice. I would really like to see a cool white with a dark celadon/khaki/greyish color on the wood trim, of which we have quite a bit. It is a two story bldg, and has not been painted for 40 yrs, so we need to find the right colors, since it may be another few decades before we repaint! I'm fighting the others, who are tending toward a darker color stucco with white trim, while I tend to want the reverse look, a nice white stucco with the darker wood trim, as we are in sunny, HOT, southern CA! Glad the video was helpful for you! It's hard to get everyone on the same page with exterior colors. A visual rendering might be helpful. Benjamin Moore and Sherwin-Williams have tools where you can upload your own image and color it. :-)

I typically recommend a slightly softer white for Spanish style homes, so try something like SW Shoji White, BM Seapearl, or BM Olympic Mountains is a good place to start.

Would you help me decide a Trim color for deck, facia, house, shop, and out building with for example Shoji White?? I have grayish stone work with some other muted undertone neutral colors, almost peachy or brown in some some stones. House faces north, and get extreme sun from the south and then in west at sunset. Lots of wind, and dust, we live alongside the Columbia River Gorge in Washington.
The Backdrop is yellow beighy hills mostly in summer and green in spring. Our home is a Modern (one story design) with white rock roof with good shade and green in the front, but very little shade and lots of sun in the south. The facia is very wide and the house is presently color stained grey.
We are looking for a change!!

Really informative in choosing whites, thank you for the video. What about white on another white? I have a white vinyl fence on a retaining wall and would love the retaining wall to be white but scared it will clash.
As long as you stick with a white in a neutral or similar tone (cool versus warm) to your fence, you should be ok. Best to get some samples and hold them next to your fence to see each color looks.
Thanks for the info! I’m debating between white dove and seapearl for my exterior brick home and am torn… on paper, swiss coffee seems like a good compromise between the two, but would you recommend that for an exterior? Any help would be much appreciated!

Swiss Coffee is another popular white for exteriors, and could be a great choice for your home! Definitely get a sample to try and compare it with White Dove and Seapearl to see which one looks best.
great info. What sheen would you recommend for large format fiber cement?
A flat sheen is usually best for fiber cement, but a satin could also work if it's fairly smooth (not a lot of imperfections to hide)
What do you think of SW Pure White for exterior paired with Urbane Bronze on posts, front door and shutters? Thank you.
Those two colors work great together. Depending on your lighting, Pure White can lean slightly stark, so if that happens try something slightly more creamy, which will really compliment Urbane Bronze.
What off white would you recommend for a North facing Spanish tile home? We have painted one wall of our home Swiss coffee and it seems to be showing a green undertone at dusk. Any advice would be appreciated.
I would try SW Shoji White, BM Navajo White, and you might give SW Egret White a look.

What white color and black trim do you recommend from Dunn-Edwards for a north facing home? Thank you!
Try Dunn Edwards Whisper, White Picket Fence, or Swiss Coffee for the body color. For the "black" trim, I really like Blackjack, Espresso Macchiato and Mink
Regarding Moderne white, you mentioned dark gray accents. What are some of your favorite dark grays?

With Moderne White, I like SW Pavestone and SW Gauntlet Gray. BM Kendall Charcoal is another great choice. If you want an off-black, try SW Urbane Bronze or SW Iron Ore.
Is there a material you can add to your house exterior paint for easy cleaning or to rebel dirt?
There are some additives out there you can add to help repel dirt...I'm not sure how well they work, but could be worth a try. Here's one that gets good reviews (affiliate link): bit.ly/3BKnHSJ

Yes, give Shoji White a try. Other good options ,if you want to avoid being too bright, are SW White Duck, BM Olympic Mountains, BM Pale Oak, and SW Oyster White.
Do you think the houses with trim used the same color for their trim? And same sheen for trim? I've looked at your blog post too and I don't see it mentioned even in the original sources.
Yes, to me it looks like they are using the same color for trim. For sheen, you can use satin on both the trim and siding. If you have stucco, you should use a flat sheen
What color do you recommend for humid and tropical hot places ?
Light paint colors will be best for reflecting sunlight and keeping your house cooler. Whites, pastels, or light grays would all work well in a tropical setting.

That's BM Simply White, which is a little brighter than I usually recommend. However, if your house gets a lot of shade in the front (like the one in the picture), it can be a great option.
I want to use BM White Dove for the exterior except I have no shade trees until we grow some. So now I am second guessing since i live on a tropical island. Also I barely see any interior designers mention PPG paints. I have used this brand before and found it to be durable for a tropical climate. Can you say which PPG whites are close to BM White Dove as well as some others you mentioned?
For PPG paints that are similar to BM White Dove, try Gypsum, Delicate White and Commercial White. PPG Atrium White is a close match to SW Alabaster. PPG Off White is a good one if you'd like to lean more toward SW Shoji White.

Should LRV level change based on geographical location of home …sunnier climates lower LRV versus higher LRV for more cloudy climates ?
Yes, if you live in a cloudy climate, or your home gets a lot of shade, you may be able to push your LRV a little brighter. In a climate where you get a lot of sun, and your exterior gets a lot of natural light, a lower LRV may be best.

Typically a flat sheen is best for stucco or highly textured finishes, and a satin is good for siding.
Hi, i want to paint my house white..i thought the trim is suppose to be more glossier than the house. Would i not do this when i paint my house, or just do it all the same?
These days, people are opting for a little less shine for their trim. I typically recommend using a satin sheen for siding and trim. You can definitely choose a semi-gloss for trim and accents, if you'd like. It's not a huge difference.
I am interested in a consultation. We are in contract to buy a home (interior is up-to-date, freshly painted,) but exterior needs to be painted. It's a 1920 cottage and is currently white with black trim and I want to stay with that look. It's only 1700 sq. feet so I feel that the white keeps it "larger" for curbside appeal. What color could you recommend for hot climate and dust city
If you're trying to hide the dust, you may want to avoid a bright, crisp white, and instead try something like an off-white or even a light greige. Some recommendations to try include: BM Pale Oak, BM Olympic Mountains, or BM Classic Gray

What would be the best color to paint your porch floor with a black front door and white dove porch railings? im struggling to find a floor color
A medium or charcoal gray would be a good option. Try BM Kendall Charcoal or BM Chelsea Gray. You could also warm things up a bit with a medium-dark greige, like BM Briarwood

I tried chelsea gray but its too light with the outdoor natural light, so id like something with a bit more "meat" to it. ill try the kendall charcoal....and my wife now wants dark green shutters, not black :) kendall should look nice with the dark green shutters and door....charcoal slate from BM is another shade im thinking...i really like the kendall coloring but have to try it outdoors in the natural sunlight. thank you so much. Who thought flooring would be such a tough decision. We are looking for a neutral which goes with most outdoor rugs and furniture

Pure White has some warmth to it, so give it a sample. However, it has quite a bit of gray to it, so it could end up looking a little too stark. You might also try SW Alabaster or BM White Dove to compare.
What color is the door on the white duck house?
According to the builder/designer, that door color was a custom shade. It sure is pretty, though!

Flat is good for stucco. For siding and trim, you can do a satin sheen. Doors can be satin or semi-gloss
So if I have a south facing house with a lot of large trees which would you recommend?
Same here and I was wondering the same thing
Great question! South facing homes get a lot of light, so they can handle both cooler and warmer whites. If you get a lot of shade from your trees, you can go a bit brighter with the color, but you might also want to stay slightly warmer with the white. If you want a brighter, crisp-looking white, try BM White Dove. If you want something a little creamier, SW Alabaster is a great choice. And, if you want a softer off-white, try SW Shoji White or BM Seapearl. Those whites are tried and true favorites!

Why do all decorators only pick SW or Ben Moore colors. There are tons of other colors from other Manufactures that have beautiful colors.
I agree with you! There are a lot of beautiful colors from other manufacturers. BM and SW are just popular, well-known brands, and many painters prefer using them.
