    VoicePlay have been described as the musical theater geeks of the a cappella world. The key to their work is in their name VoicePLAY. I think they are the most interesting and versatile of all the a cappella groups. The fact that they do most of their own production with some help from key people sets them apart from the other groups.

    The long-haired bass is Geoff (Jeff) Castellucci. Geoff and the beatboxer Layne are the last 2 original members been together since middle school. J. one is a former member who left to join the Navy in 2021 and when he's home on leave to Orlando, he gets together with the boys and does things like this. The other bass is from Home Free, Tim Foust. Geoff does low-bass covers on his own channel. VoicePlay is independent and does 90% of its own stuff. Arrangments, costumes, sets, lighting, etc. They do have an audio mixer, Ed Boyer. Rick Underwood does their Makeup. They know a lot of people from Florida theme parks (Disney & Universal).

    The bass for this group often sounds deeper, even if he isn't. He has a very rounded, dark tone with his larynx in a dropped position that makes his voice sound darker and deeper, yet somehow, not cold. It's why so many people enjoy him so much. Not to mention that range. They do certainly play with the production. Especially lately. They had to stop touring during the pandemic so they put all their focus into making their videos. They've really raised the bar lately. I'd recommend their cover of Metallica's "Nothing Else Matters." It's pretty fantastic!

      You're right
      Though, in this song, Geoff is singing in the A1-D2 range, give or take, when he takes the lead. That's pretty damn low to be singing with clear diction and stability. I give him all the props for being able to do that, despite not being a super low bass.

      Thing is...even if Tim Foust might have a bigger arsenal of lower notes, Geoff's voice is indeed deeper...there are a lot of notes that Tim flawlessly does with vocal fry that Geoff does in chest voice....hell, I'm almost sure even Avi has a deeper voice than Tim.

  • @CynicalTesuji
    @CynicalTesuji Před rokem +11

    This isn't the first time they've included rap in their music ("Superstitious", from back when J. None was still a fulltime member of VoicePlay); one of the fun things about VoicePlay is the way that they always seem to mix up genres in their arrangements. They've done classical performances with a trap beat (In the Hall of the Mountain King), injected R&B into a rock classic (Dream On), and I've lost count of how many songs have had a dubstep drop added. It's always surprising, and it always sounds amazing.
    As far as the production levels... I feel pretty sure there's some post production responsible for some of the effects we're hearing, but I'm not a Patron on a high enough level to see more of their production work in-depth. Not all of their music has this level of post-production to it however, and they are just as amazing live as you'd expect of any top-tier a cappella group. For what it's worth, they pretty much *have* been doing this for their whole lives; Geoff and Layne have been singing and performing together since middle school. But circling back to the effects- at the base of it, every sound used in VoicePlay's music is created organically, either by their voices or body percussion, and if they ever break that rule they will show it (for example, Cesar shaking a manacle for a measure or two of percussion in Hoist the Colours, or Layne's use of the violin in a couple other videos- one of which is a surprise, so I won't name either one). They don't use effects to compensate for their voices (these guys are still amazing live), but as accents, and at the end of the day it's all about creating incredible music. I've felt for a while now that there is something revolutionary about their arrangements, like they are taking a cappella places that even the other big names haven't gone yet.

  • @bjspeck4337
    @bjspeck4337 Před rokem +9

    We fans of VoicePlay really believe they deserve more attention than they get. Part of it is that in the 25 yrs they have been doing this, they do it themselves - no labels, no management, no contracts. They are in Orlando - home of the theme parks and they know have all worked at those theme parks. They know the difference in what costuming, makeup, staging, video, audio, arranging, etc. makes to a piece. Geoff (bass) and Layne (beatboxer) alternate on the upcoming productions and are in charge of getting it ready to go. Eli (rhymes with jelly, bald high tenor) has been doing the lighting, computer backgrounds, green screens, and the occasional arrangement (think Eleanor Rigby). Cesar (baritenor) is the newest cast member. He covers both J None's baritone (also tenor) and Earl who has an incredible high tenor but left the group for personal reasons. J None (rapper) was a member but was recruited into the US Navy for his vocal talents (5 yr stint - 2 done, 3 to go). He comes and does a video with them when he has leave. He has done the lead in Friends on the Other Side, featured vocalist in Nothing Else Matters, this one, and a few shorts or minis. In this case, he flew in to do this and 3 days later, was at his wedding. They are short one vocalist and take advantage of that by bringing in the perfect person for whatever music they are doing. It gives them a lot of versatility for their arrangements. Ed Boyer is the final mix on audio (best in the business for acapella groups). VoicePlay has done well over 800 videos and not a dud in the bunch. VoicePlayas are major fans and if you will react to them, we will be here for you!

    It is like they got together in the back of a bar or somewhere and said, "We can start off with a chant, move it up to a type of hard ballad, then Elli can let loose his inner rock god, and what the heck, let's throw in some rap! We have everything else in there, why not? Hey, Geoff, the people want subharmonics? Let's give it to them! BOO-YA!"

  • @CJ_536
    @CJ_536 Před rokem +7

    You asked about production. Yes, they use all voice for the sounds, and yes they use a daw for mixing and post prod. They are very open about their production techniques and will display instruments when they are used. I have only ever seen a violin, wooden percussion sticks (don't know the name), and a pitch pipe. But if the song calls for distortion, like this, they add it post prod in the daw. Also, yes, Eli came from rock before he joined Voiceplay.

    Huzzah, I'm so glad you found these guys! They've actually been around since 1997, but they've only been called VoicePlay since 2012 (previously they were called 4:2:Five.)
    They do make copyright claims, but they are reactor-friendly and do not issue takedown notices.
    The bass singer's name is Geoff Castellucci. I'm told that VERY low note he sang at the beginning of this video was the first time that note (B0) has been sung in a professional recording. He's a friend of Tim Foust of Home Free, who may be the other bass singer you were thinking of, and they've collaborated a couple of times. You've reacted to a few of Geoff's solo numbers from his own channel before, but not, I think, to Voiceplay as a group.
    J.None, the gentleman who was rapping in the video, is a former member of the group who still joins them as a guest artist when he's on leave from the military. You're correct that Eli Jacobson, the bald fellow, comes from a rock background. The beatboxer's name is Layne Stein, and the scary berserker is Cesar De La Rosa.
    They're currently short a member, and they invite a variety of amazing guest artists to fill the fifth spot, including but not limited to Rachel Potter, Ashley Diane, Omar Cardona, Jose Rosario Jr., Anthony Gargiula and Deejay Young. (They've done a cover of the song Just Sing featuring a large number of their former members, collaborators, friends and relatives.)
    They do sometimes add sound effects in post-production, but (with very rare exceptions) do not use instruments.
    They have a large catalogue of full-length covers and shorts. Some of the highlights I recommend include Metallica's Nothing Else Matters, Hoist the Colours from Pirates of the Caribbean, We Don't Talk About Bruno from Disney's Encanto, In The Hall of the Mountain King based on the orchestral piece by Edvard Grieg, Aerosmith's Dream On, Oogie Boogie's song from The Nightmare Before Christmas, and the title song from The Phantom of the Opera, (ETA, how did I forget Queen in Five Minutes?) but I could just keep going...virtually everything they've done is excellent.

Geoff, the bass, is definitely the best one of all of them ( and I'm a former Acapella group member from high school ), he actually holds 2 World Records for his ability to hit the sub harmonic notes. The part you highlighted was almost certainly over-tracked - something VoicePlay has said in the past that they sometimes do, to make the sound fuller. But yes, they are virtually completely a cappella - I'm only aware of 2 of their videos where they use instruments (which are prominently displayed in the videos, so no mistaking them), although I am not as familiar with their early work as I intend to become. One of those videos is very recent, their cover of Metallica's Nothing Else Matters, which has the same lineup of performers as this one did, so it might be a good one for you to listen to.
    VoicePlay started off in the mid 90's as a 5 man a cappella group (they've always been a cappella), but for the last couple of years they've been short one member, and they've filled in with various guest artists, a large number of whom have been female. They've done a bunch of Disney-based medleys and songs - they're based in Orlando, FL, and many of the members have sung in the big theme parks in the area.
    Recommendations: Nothing Else Matters, The Dragonborn Comes (Skyrim), Halo theme, Little Mermaid medley, We Don't Talk About Bruno, Attention

    This one really is one of their more "produced" songs, but they have shown they can sing so clean, and with all the power, even without distortion and effects. A few effects sprinkled in makes for a more epic feel. I recommend their version of "Nothing Else Matters" (also featuring J.None, who was a member but is currently in the Navy and returns for a song when he's on leave) as well as Geoff Castellucci's solo channel and either "Blackbird" (by The Beatles) where he really shows off his 5 octave range, or "Sixteen Tons" which is so much fun. He also recently released "Sound of Silence" which quickly rose to be my favorite cover of that song. Geoff also gives lessons on how to sing low. All of these men are insanely talented.

Peyton Parrish & Eric Hollaway. Peyton also has his own solo version out. I have all five in my playlist. The rap is unique to this version. MoS loved it, rated it 10 out of 10 raised ale horns.
    This one follows My Mother Told Me, also a Viking song, from 2 years ago. Their outfits are almost the same and tattoos/makeup is the same in both, with the addition of a small rune reading "VoicePlay". The black guy in the center was a group member then. He's now singing for the navy and comes back as a guest when on leave. Cesar, with the bushy hair and beard is the new member. That "Synthesizer" sound you're hearing is actually Layne just layering white noise on top of the audio track and some reverb. Not much editing is done there to get that sound, but there is some editing. Most Acapella nowadays has some backing tracks that just help alter the natural sound. If you listen very closely in a lot of their music Layne utilizes white noise a lot. You barely notice it.

    Geoff Castelluci has 5 vocal range, very difficult.

    Bit late to the party but that first super low note is a b0… Geoff the bass has at least a 5 octave range as well as a voice that doubles as a Viking war horn.

    Multitrack plus filtering. I've heard a couple ways it could have been done... either a post filter or a white noise track (filter or possibly produced by Lane the beatboxer) over top of the vocal tracks with the balance manipulated. Maybe some reverb as well.

    Calling Geoff deep is insufficient in my opinion, he's God damn subterranean ^^

    Miracle of sound. You should lisern to the original version. This one does nothing for me. The original would make you go for you’d axes. Definitely not Viking music to sloppy!😊

    Honestly not a huge fan of this one. The bass guy seems like he's more focused on going as low as possible than he is on the tone of his delivery. Peyton Parrish has such a solid gravelly voice for this song

      Miracle of Sound rated it 10 out of 10 alehorns, stating it was one of the most creative covers he had heard.
      And the bass is only that low because the arranger (the beat boxer) makes him go there. The running joke is he has no regard for how high or low anything is.

      Layne said he does it purposely to challenge Geoff. Geoff response? I can only go so low.
      Geoff said Layne is the type when he hears it it if he likes it it goes in the song and everyone else has to suffer lol.
      That's pretty much how you can tell a Layne arrangement or a Geoff arrangement. If there are tons of lows its Layne. If the lows are mixed with baritone their Geoff's.

      Geoff's tone is far easier to understand than anything low done in a growl technique.

      Yes. I think it might be due to
      1. He was in choir in High school as a tenor and every year they went caroling.
      2. He had a vocal coach that helped him.
      3. He performed at both Disney World and Universal Studios in shows so he had to sing clear.
      They all did Disney World or Universal except Eli. He was in several rock bands before Voiceplay.
      That's how they met alot of their collaborators. And their makeup artist.
      Helps they live in Orlando Florida 😊.

      That was all Layne, the arranger and beatboxer. In a q and a on Patreon, Geoff was openly expressing his amused irritation that Layne makes arrangements without regard to sing ability or even listenability. Geoff didn't think people would enjoy the really low parts here. Layne pushed Geoff to sing so low here that Geoff said it took five hours to record. It is obviously an excellent arrangement and we fans love it, so it is very listenable, but it isn't Geoff that chooses to sing that low. When he does the arrangements the low bass is just in short bursts, not the whole song. I tell my friends that Geoff uses his voice like a bass guitar and Layne uses it like a foghorn. Both are brilliant but fans will likely prefer one over the other.
