    Hello Tom, I've been following you for a long time, but have never made a comment until now. I support you 1 trillion percent. You have a phenomenal way of addressing the matters at hand within the Disney Co, with such accuracy and support for the cast members who MAKE the magic. I agrees with you that many employees are living under the poverty level, sleeping in cars or showering in costuming lockers before work because they have no other option. I never heard of individuals living like that when Walt Disney was around. I have worked with the company for 37 years, and I was better off financially when I was making $3.75 an hour than I am at $25 now. I am 55 years old living with my 80 year old mother being extremely grateful that I have a place to live rather than sleeping in my car. I need Disney due to medical insurance reasons, but I DO remember when employees USED to look forward to coming to work. The company USED to do more for their employees than a cupcake or a ride on an attraction, or a pin that they can't wear on their costume or sell. WHAT GOOD IS IT? Whenever I get a pin, I always throw it in the trash. This company used to be the foundation of success, but not any longer. Why the company thinks that living in cars is ok when they refuse to negotiate for better cost of living adjustments for their employees. Keep up the good work Tom and THANK YOU FOR YOUR EXCELLENT SUPPORT TO ALL DISNEY EMPLOYEES. Well Done!!!

My daughter has been a CM for almost 6 yrs and loves it, but is struggling to stay with the company due to rises in rent, utilities etc. She has had to start working a second job after finishes Disney shifts to make ends meet. Matters are not helped by most CMs not even getting 40 hrs for full time anymore. • @MasterGamer88
    @MasterGamer88 Před rokem +29

    Tom I could not agree more with you. I have been a long time Disney fan from childhood and my family got in on DVC almost right at the beginning. This company/these parks are nowhere near the standard of magic that they were back in the 90's even the 00's. It is absolutely disgusting how dilapidated the system has become both in how the parks are managed and how they treat their staff. I honestly have not stepped foot inside of a park since 2019 and even then felt disenfranchised with how crappy the place was looking and how much of the 'magic' that they removed. Watching your videos and other vloggers has made me not interested in going back until they make some vast corrections but they keep heading of course in the opposite direction. It is such a shame that I am unable to show my own family what an amazing childhood I had going to these parks again and again. And just as you said I can live with the price raises if it treats their employees better and brings back that amazing feeling from my youth. But to keep raising prices and taking things away is just too much. I am tired of them resting on their laurels and the name 'Disney' thinking that that is enough alone to make me pay so much to come back. I am starting to look at other parks all around the US rather than considering to waste my hard earned cash to just watch everyone have a miserable time there. At this point I am hoping Dollywood is a better adventure. Thank you for being a voice to these people.

    Tom your are 100% right. I keep watching and waiting for Disney to resemble what it once did. Our December 2021 trip was unlike anything we ever experienced before. The cast members were miserable, and it broke my heart. I will not go back until they fix this. I cannot have fun at the expense of someone else’s misery. I cannot support a company that keeps taking money from me, that for many years I gladly gave, to treat cast members horribly. And from a business standpoint the cast members are their product. And it shows. Paying a lot for a bad product makes no sense, and the money hoarders on top need to see that.

  • @CastawayRJ
    @CastawayRJ Před rokem +14

    Amen to that! It makes me sad that the Disney we all know in love is gone. Cast members shouldn’t be treated like trash. They should be treated like you care about them, and increase their wages, so they can make ends meet. I’ve been going to WDW since 2002, and seeing how Disney is treating cast members is horrible. I hope my parents are not planning another trip to WDW, because I’m not going to a Disney theme park until Disney turns around, and starts doing the right thing by stop treating their cast members like trash, increase their wages, so they can make ends meet, reduce prices, add good, high quality attractions, increase park capacity, keep their attractions maintained, and cleaned, make movies that will be successful, and make a Disney vacation more of a vacation, and less stressful for people.

    One of the bad things about the company is the fact that they're not caring about their full time/part time cast members because they want to get more College Program kids into their jobs. They don't have to pay them nearly as much, not 100% protected by the union, AND they are still making money from the rent that they pay. Several people I know say that they're basically only making a few dollars an hour which is bizarre. These people are doing it because they love the company but they're being suckered into a horrible situation. I've been looking for a job in the company for almost two months now knowing that they are desperate in almost every position from custodial to merchandise. I'm aware of the not so great pay I will be receiving but I absolutely loved working in the parks for my college program and I want to continue that and hopefully work my way up to make things better. Thank you Tom for your support for the cast members!

    I’ve been working in customer service for just under a year, and I’ve seen some angry people, angry for very insignificant things of course. All that isn’t even worth $15 an hour. If I was a cast member and this was how they treated me, I would be insulted, outraged, there would not be enough words to express it. People are tired of being treated like garbage at work, and Disney better be prepared for the inevitable strikes.

    You go Tom! Your rant is on point. DIS Unplugged says the same thing about CM.
    I too am tired of the "go find another job" whine. You get the jobs available in your area. No, not everyone can move. Moving takes money. CM, like every other regular person, doesn't control the cost of rent, gas, food, utilities, or any of the hundreds of other items needed for a halfway decent life.
    If you think Disney isn't going to raise prices anyway, you are living in a fantasy world. Disney executives need to make a sacrifice and do the right thing. If guests were unhappy about lack of housekeeping and parking charges, think how unhappy guests will be about even less CM and unmagical ones at that. Just saying.

    I honestly don't know what else to say because you said it so perfectly, Tom. When Walt ran the company, it was like a family. The castmembers were treated with respect and taken care. Nowadays, castmembers can't even afford the daily necessities because upper management would rather pour its money into another stupid remake or sequel that the company DOESN'T NEED *cough* Toy Story 5. I think it's pathetic that Universal is willing to pay its team members what they're worth but Disney refuses to do so. Basically, it's time for the upper management to start practicing what they preach. Castmembers truly are the magic and deserve to be treated as such. Without them, the company would be nothing.

Back then we were making more than most other jobs, but there was an expectation that came along with that. I’m willing to put in the extra work to make more than what I can make at McDonald’s, but at this point there doesn’t seem to be a difference between working in the parks and working at a fast food restaurant, retail store, or whatever it may be when you account for all the extra hoops you have to jump through. And it hurts when you get your yearly review, and your pay raise is affected by the fact that you’re “not as passionate about your job” when the fact is you’re still as passionate, but I’ve been beaten down over the past three years and struggling to survive.

The cast members deserve min. of $17.00 an hour now, with a dollar a year increase with incentives. The reason Disney parks were so popular was it was a safe, reasonably priced, clean, HAPPY place/experience to bring the family and be around all those HAPPY people. Other parks are making Disney look poorly. Drop all this garbage on buying all these special deals just to be able to get a ride, which to me is just another way Disney is cheating the family/customer. Buying an entrance ticket should be enough. Then use the fast pass system. That’s it!!!

    Watched it again (this time it’s just the rant). I got to thinking, when my wife and I honeymooned in Walt Disney World in October 1991, during the 20th anniversary celebration, the parks were not crowded. We were able to take our time, see as much as we wanted, and very infrequently waited in a line of more than 30 minutes. We didn’t take advantage of early park hours or after hours days for resort guests. We often entered the parks after 10am and still had plenty of time to do and see everything. We immediately booked a return trip when we got home.
    So, May 1992 we go back. Parks were a lot more crowded, but still no lines longer than 45 minutes. Still not taking advantage of early/after park hours for resort guests and still doing everything we wanted to do leisurely. Not only that, but we visited other attractions in Orlando too.
    September 1999 was our first trip with a child. Midday naps and frequent trips to the resort pools, but still saw everything we wanted to see. The only thing that had a line over 45 minutes was Soarin’, but it was a recent addition and FastPass was free. This was the first trip ever using FastPass, we never even had to consider it prior to this trip.
    We went back in July 2000, tons of people in the parks. We still did everything we wanted to do and only used FastPass for Peter Pan’s Flight, Buzz Lightyear Space Ranger Spin, Maelstrom, and Soarin’. All the other rides, 20 minutes or less.
    Our next trip was not until September 2002, we are now DVC members. We had a 5 day stay (compliments of DVC) at Disney’s Yacht Club and then moved over the Disney’s Beach Club Villas for the remaining 7 (12 day trip). We took advantage of early park hours on two days and used FastPass several times. Some line waits were over 75 minutes. We did not get to do everything we wanted to do, but it was a good visit. We purchased annual passes on this trip and returned the following September to get to those things we didn’t on the prior trip. This trip was 7 days and we did finish out what we missed on the previous trip, but lines were routinely 75 minutes or longer with few exceptions. FastPass was used everyday, multiple times a day.
    We took several trips over the next 12 years (usually two per year to get everything in). I think in 2013, they started My Disney Experience and Magic Bands, this further complicated our trips. Having to link everything was horrible and time consuming. The app was frequently inoperable and park WiFi was very unreliable. We visited guest relations for three days and then the finally gave us keys and passes separate from the Magic Bands.
    FastPass+ was also introduced and now, I had no choice but to bring my phone everywhere. Normally, I would lock up the phone for park visits. We were all together, so it wasn’t necessary to have my phone on me all the time. Also, I was there to escape my everyday routine. The phone would vibrate on rides and while walking through the park, so I’d look at it. They were nearly all from the Disney app to alert me of ride times and upcoming FastPass+ reservations. Now, I’m not 10 years old. I didn’t need these reminders, they were annoying.
    Two of the last three visits, I went back to locking up the phone. I couldn’t stand the constant alerts. I even turned them off, but every time I would make another FastPass+ reservation…the app would turn the alerts back on.
    I would like to go back to the system that was in place on those first few visits. Whatever they were doing then worked. Lines were not unbearably long, FastPass+/Genie+ was unnecessary, cast members were everywhere you needed them, and most of all…we all had a good time. Something broke after 2001. They forgot how to handle crowds and how to control traffic within the parks. The little things that drew people’s attention disappeared. Having to constantly check an app while on vacation, that’s no one’s idea of a good time.
    Okay, my rant is over. Hoping the cast members get a better deal. No reason at all for full time workers anywhere to not have the ability to survive.

    My family and I were in Animal Kingdom yesterday. We ate in Tiffins, as someone who takes their family to Disney World two times a year for atleast 2 weeks or more. We could tell the morale was down in cast members. Problems in the kitchen and the waiter told us they were having issues. All we could do was say the truth. Cast members need to be paid more and valued more like the past. It’s a shame. The lighting that comes on at night was down on the tower of terror stone at night. The little things us veterans see is important. Disney front office. Get it together. All we could do was thank our cast members and say we are pulling for them. It went a long way for a lot of them.

  • @staceyotterwright2473

    You are 100% correct, Tom! The fact that Disney execs refuse to pay the majority of their cast members a real livable wage is shameful. I would wager that there is no exec that can do the jobs of the CMs for month or even a full 40-hour week.

    As a proud trade unionist I always empathize with the plight of the working person. Years ago when I found out that Disney World was unionized I was thrilled. However this is the kind of news that saddens me greatly. I love Disney like you (the creative not the corporate behemoth). As someone who is proudly (and loudly) pro- union and the labor movement I still concede that if labor was treated fairly and compensated properly unions wouldn't have to exist, hence why universal stepping up and pushing the raises further exemplifies that argument right there. Although I still think that is the bare minimum as the cost of living across this country has skyrocketed.
    To make a long story short I applaud you for talking about this and talking about it loudly. I agree with you that more of the disney and parks content creators need to be talking about this like you.

    One aspect of Disney I have never seen printed has to do with Silver Passes given to retirees. They have been given out since the company started. The Silver Pass was given to all retirees that enabled them to get in the park for free with up to 3 guests. This was good for any day the parks were open with only maybe 3 weeks at holidays when attendance was at the limit could they not be used. Now Silver Pass holders cannot bring guests and the passes are good only about 25 days of the year. Some gift.

    When is the current contract due to expire? I’m a ups employee and contract negotiations are essential but to reinvest in the machine of Disney or ups is to reinvest in the people. The people make it happen. It can not work without the manpower and you want the best people don’t be afraid to pay the best to get the best. I was not aware they gave up the right to strike in a previous contract. What could they have traded in negotiations to give up the option to strike. It’s weak and that needs to be written into the next one. You are e correct that universal will buy the workforce from Disney and in that they will buy a better experience in the universal park with experienced employees who are happy and healthy.

I’ve been working since the mid 60s and you’re right. when the beast of corporate management starts wanting more and more and more it is the support or the little people that take the hit and decide to go other places. I myself, upon a time was not afraid to get up and go someplace else, so yeah you’re right and I’m also gonna let a couple of my stock holding companies. Know how right you are and to compare stock earnings and prices to watch how Disney will drop.

    Has there been any data on the number of cast members who have been receiving government subsidies like, food stamps, WIC, etc. because they are considered at or below the poverty level? I’m sure Disney would not want people to know about that and would be shamed by it. Has the union ever canvased their membership to get that information?

    I wish most corporate companies gave this much of a sh*t as Tom does. I work in IT and can tell you horror stories about how predatory management is. Granted I am at a point in my life where I can say I am somewhat more lucky than most, but I worked my arse off to get there. I also didn’t get fully compensated for it either, because I thought management would see the results and give a damn. Sadly that doesn’t happen, and I would love to think Disney will do the right thing, but the corporate greed is to much nowadays. I would also be remiss if I didn’t mention that some of this situation is politically motivated as well, since the US gave companies the right to be considered the same as people and thus protected under the thirteenth amendment. You roll that back, and proper change and moderation of these companies will change.

    Tom I totally agree with you; this is downright shameful! What has been going on is really making hard to support the Disney Co as a whole. What makes this sickening is allegedly Disney is supposed to be above other companies, but they are just like them. The powers that be at Disney know no one can afford to live like this; but they do not care; just imagine all these cast members living in their cars, with how dangerous the world is now and Bob Iger gets to go to bed in his mansion every night. Sadly I guess Josh D’Amaro and Bob Iger did not turn out to be the saviors everyone thought they were when it comes to employees. But saddens me also is this is probably the tip of the iceberg because I am concerned Bob Iger is only here to promote Disney's 100 anniversary. Then Disney will end up like another company SEARS.
