When the feeling of an experience is strong and genuine enough, then even if the same experience is repeated in time the feeling is always new. It was never about doing actually new things never seen, but about being genuine to oneself. The contemporary conclusion that everything that is genuine must be unique is not always true. And should not be taken as absolute.

The attitude he expresses here is spot on.. it’s so hard to move away from the academic stiff posture that, while being so useful in many respects, is limiting to doing truly new things. Serra has an eye for the objects but also for the process, space and environment. Check this visual essay on his first major assignment outside the USA, in Barcelona 1984:

"its a hard one, clear your own way even though you know you're going to be another rock on the wall" hmm.. Richard Serra seems wise... but that was just discouraging to artists that want to not only clear away for themselves but for anyone else.. but then again everything is remix

Richard Serra's job is not to try and cheer you up. He's bringing truth to the conversation. Maybe that's not what you want to hear.
