      If you're not aware, the first one is from "All New Materials", second is "Luck as a Constant" and the third one is from a pedal demo he did, search for "Mark Holcomb Haunted Delay Demo"! Although the youtuber Scias did a 9 min loop version of the third one, might wanna check that out.

    I applaud anyone who has the patience to dial through all of those settings and the programming involved. I’m also impressed that with that much gain and three guitarists everything sits so well in their mixes, I’ve no doubt that any one of them could make a career just being an engineer and producer; simply fabulous attention to detail and great “ears”.

  • @EdSeith
    @EdSeith Před 7 lety +12

    Great stuff, but this really should be classified more as "gate staging" than gain staging. I've always understood "gain staging" to be more about using gain at different stages of the signal path to a cumulative end - a distortion pedal into a dirty channel on an amp, and cranking the power amp section - that's three stages of gain that make up the overall gain in the tone proper.
    Great lesson in what a Fractal can do with gates and midi control (I may implement something like that on my Fractal, albeit without the automation), but it's really not "gain" that this video was about. As always, love watching and listening to Mark discuss his music and his setup. Thanks, Mark!

    • @lukebogartmix
      @lukebogartmix Před 6 lety +2

      I think it's cause they change the amount of input gain to control the noise gate, rather than change the gate threshold (although it could probably be both)

      Agreed. I messed with the HBE block and one of Misha's cab mixes from the Cab Pack #13, threw the T808 Mod drive in front of it with a noise gate and came sort of close to the tone Mark uses in all the videos he makes. I'm also using his sig PRS with the alpha/omega, so that also helps obviously. It's close, not exact... but pretty close.

      He puts those on himself. In an interview he explained that eventhough he loves is $4000 signature that he wanted to make one that was as affordable as possible while still keeping the most important parts like the pickups, neck profile, and fretboard radius. All he changes is swapping the tuners, the nut material and one of the knobs to a push pull to make it better to use live.

There was a video where he explained the process of working with PRS, to give the fans a guitar that sounds as close and plays the same as the $4000 model. All he does is add locking tuners and change the nut. For better tuning stability live.
