Mother of a Murdered Son Discusses Grief | We Are Witnesses: Chicago

- In 2012, Lisa Daniels’ son, Darren B. Easterling, was murdered during a drug deal gone sour. “The day after Darren was murdered, I read a newspaper article …” she told The Marshall Project. “They minimized his entire life, his entire 25 years to one sentence. They dehumanized him. He was still a father, a brother, a son. His death left a void.”
She was frustrated by the one-dimensional portrayal of her son’s life and her sentiments extended to her son’s killer, too. Daniels realized the two were treated similarly by the media, and she pleaded for leniency on behalf of her son’s killer during sentencing. Four years after her son’s death, Daniels founded the Darren B. Easterling Center for Restorative Practices, which offers trauma-centered recovery services to families who have lost a loved one to violence. In 2018, she was appointed to the Illinois Prisoner Review Board.

Wow. My son was murdered in 1997 and I felt the same way as this lady. Everyone said I was crazy. No one stood with me. Nothing was going to bring back my son. He was 22. I felt for the other family as well. All the children belong to all of us.

It is so sad that Darren's murder was just one of thousands over the years in Chicago. Lisa is a strong willed woman with nerves of steel.
i was the survivor and witness to the double homicide/suicide of my little brother, mother, and stepfather, the latter being the assailant. this happened in dec of 2003. i'm working on processing this and would like to work with anyone who can give me a platform to share my story so i may help others and move on

That’s what I really wanna do - give people a platform to tell their stories and help others who may have gone through similar things or help prevent the same thing from happening again. I have a life story that I want to share to help others and I want to give other people a safe place to share their life experiences as well. I just have no idea where to start or how to make my dream become reality.
