Great video. I replaced 5 old FireX 120-1182 Smoke Detectors with Kidde I4618 in about an hour Couple of notes: 1) the adapter being sold now at Home Depot and Amazon is the KA-F2. It doesn't look like the one in this video but works. 2) The female connector on old FireX plug had one pin opening protruding beyond the others enough that it wouldn't snap into the KA-F2. I used a channel lock pliers to gently squeeze each of the ends of the connecter and adaptor and then it snapped together.
This was very helpful. I too had to use the KA-F2. The process is easy. Just takes a bit of effort to get the wire harness off of the old fire alarm. A flat edge screw driver does the job.
I recently learned that you should replace smoke alarms every 10 years. I found a good deal on a six pack of the Kidde i12060 at Home Depot online. This model seems identical to the i4618 but with a 10 year warranty instead of 5, and the battery compartment opens by pushing instead of sliding. The additional adapter pack part no. 21028461 ($4.50) comes with two kinds of adapters for two types of older alarms, one of which worked with my old Firex ADC harness--I'd rather not deal with wiring 15 feet up a ladder. The one at the store (KA-B2 and KA-F2) is different from the one in this video (KA-B or KA-F) - the B2 and F2 have a length of wires, plus the adapters on each end-drawback is that makes it a little hard to fit all the wiring and adapters into the casing. Love the front loading battery; don't trust the 10 year sealed battery models due to bad reviews. (Not sure why you would need to turn off power to plug these in--How is plugging it in any different from plugging in anything to power?)
I figured it out. After you did the pressing below the rectangular thing downwards and upwards as shown in the video, you should press on the left and right of the connector. There is some gap between the connector and some plastic things. After that it will pop out nicely. Basically it has some pins that connects to the connector that requires at least forces on two sides of the connector
I purchased a different adapter, it has a very small cord attached to it. But it will not fit, there is not enough room in the electric box for the old one plus the new adaptor and small cable. So it is likely best to rewire.
Currently looking into doing this replacement. The adapter comes with the new smoke detector in the box? I saw the adapter available sold separate and its the short cable unlike the one piece unless that's what it comes with.
can you replace these a few at a time or do you have to do all at once? and can you leave one disconnected if it is a room you do not want a detector in???
The adapter plug costs more than the detector at $16. I'm going to follow advice of Octapus2 and just use the wiring harness that comes with the detector and reconnect to the wires in the ceiling box. I can't believe in this video he didn't recommend turning of the power at the breaker. He even showed using a metal screwdriver blade to remove the plug. Don't do that. Turn off the power.

Finally, somebody showing me how this really comes off!
Thanks! You saved my Christmas!
Thank you very much for posting this!

This helped me a lot
Thanks for the help!!
Wasn't actually what I was wanting to find out I wanted to know how to take the product apart to clean inside of it
Yes, awesome video thank you. So after a new installation of the i4618A it lit up green, but should it every so often flash red? Because mine is.
I believe the required plug adapter does not come packaged with the Kidde i4618. This adapter is Kidde model Ka-F?
thank you!

You turn the power off at the breaker first?
I’m having issues removing the old smoke alarm from the ceiling, seems like it’s locked. Is there a tab or something I need to push to turn it?
but my question is if the plug is somehow longer and needs to be squezed in it could be dangerous to touch those wires while the power is supplied?
Does it have on and off wall socket.
Fun fact. Kidde is pronounce Kid-uh or Kidda. 😊
They look same

Cushion for the pushin'... said fat chicks everywhere.
The video is useless , he isnt showing which adapters to get
Where I live code requires a combo smoke CO2 detector.
