  • Today, Cynthia Julian and I are taking a stroll around the back of Amberley Castle, in West Sussex, on a public footpath towards the river Arun and the railway crossing.
Amberley Castle stands in the village of Amberley, West Sussex. The castle was erected as a 12th-century manor house and fortified in 1377. It has high curtain walls, internal towers in each corner, a hall and a gateway. It was used as a fortress by the bishops of Chichester. It is a Grade I listed building and in use as privately owned hotel.
Adjacent to it are the Sussex Wildlife Trust Wild brooks, a flood plain and favour place for birds and bird-watchers.

Made me smile-lovely to see Cynthia. I drove past a couple of weeks ago and the fields were flooded and the Arun was swollen. I also drove over Bury Hill and the valley was a spectacular site-more so than usual with the flooding.

I was born and raised in amberley, lived there until I was 18 years old! Moved myself up to Bristol and regretted it ever since. Hope to one day make my way back. Lovely video x

Beautiful example of an English village. I have visited the Amberley Castle Hotel, church and museum but never taken the walk you took but will try it out ASAP 👍

Amberley Castle looks great - I think you can get a fine cream tea there!
The James Bond that was filmed partly at Amberley museum was ‘a view to a kill’, Roger Moore’s last outing as 007. ( I may have looked that up!)

Well you tease! You did walk around the castle (at least the one wall!😄). Can't wait for you to come back & do a walk of Amberly - very lovely cottages!😍 That was a very pretty stroll - wonderful historic buildings & beautiful scenery. Amazed the next village was so close w/ it's own church. As large as the one at Amberly was, I'm surprised they were not expected to attend there back in the day.

@@RichardVobes oh I had already read up on the history of it since your Sunday Chat!🤣 Though called a Castle it was always Fortified Priory built for the monks of Chichester (told you cause of you I'm learning more about England than I ever thought I would!😅). Was just really hoping you were going to take a closer walk around for a better view - & you did!😁👍

Great video as usual, Richard. It was nice to see Amberley from that angle as it takes on much more the appearance of a serious castle. The exterior walls are pretty impressive, but very overgrown with ivy.

Lovely to see Cynthia again! Back in the 1980's the Wildbrooks were so flooded that the trains made a wake as they swept along. It was like crossing an inland sea, by train!

The owner of both have good knowledge of the local area and history. The store has many many old photos of the village of my memory serves me correctly in addition to some super products ..

There’s a lovely tea rooms in the village, we’ve stopped off there a few times on our way back from Kent. The Amberley chalk pits museum is really worth a visit Richard. Great video as always.👍🏻

Sorry to correct you and Cynthia. You were looking west towards the Southdowns and you spotted Bury church, which is on the other side of the River Arun and not Houghton Church, which is south of Amberley. On a good day, when the brooks are not flooded, it's possible to cross the railway line and carry on the footpath towards the river and follow it round back towards Houghton bridge. There used to be a ferry crossing between Bury and Amberley. It was just a rowing boat, but it linked the two villages. On the 4th August 2007, TV presenter, Holly Willoughby, married Dan Baldwin at Amberley Castle.Up until four years ago,I used to be the postman for Bury village.

Interesting vlog and fascinating to learn the history of the castle. If I may take an opportunity to preach safety on the railway. To use a FP crossing safely, stand at the "stop look listen" sign which is positioned 2 metres from the rail. Look carefully both ways, if safe cross the line immediately. After watching your vlog Amberley will be in our visit list.

If you see a lot of crows then they are rooks. If you see a single rook it's a crow. These were neither. These were jackdaws also known as greypoles.

    • @RichardVobes

There you go Richard, Corvidae is a cosmopolitan family of oscine passerine birds that contains the crows, ravens, rooks, jackdaws, jays, magpies, treepies, choughs, and nutcrackers. In common English, they are known as the crow family, or, more technically, corvids. That should keep everyone happy......

Lovely to see Cynthia again for an interesting video on a walk I've done a couple of times, but in drier weather! Cream teas in the castle mmm. Lovely tearoom and pottery in the village.
If there's more than one crow they are rooks, if there is only one rook its a crow 😊

THE DUKEDOM OF SUSSEX. (verse 3 of 4).
    Come inspect your county Sir
you'll find most things in order
From aspects of its coastal fringe
    to a northern Surrey border
    Of grand castle magnificence
    Our county is not short
    At Camber and at Pevensey
    was fray and skirmish fought
So forget not little Sussex Sir
    when tending greater things
This southern place has warmed the hearts
of English kings and queens. JB18
