  • Walt Disney was the twentieth century’s prime example of American ingenuity. How did he do it? In this video, Glenn Beck, best-selling author and host of The Glenn Beck Program, explains how Disney became a household name, and how he proved that in America, the only limit to your ambition is your own imagination.

    Script:
    I want to tell you about an American Original, a man who saw into the future and made it a reality.
    He isn’t the only one to do this. There were American Originals before him-Benjamin Franklin, the Wright Brothers, John D. Rockefeller-and there are American Originals in our time, like Steve Jobs, Bill Gates, Elon Musk.
    But in the middle of the twentieth century, there was no better example than Walt Disney.
    Fifty years after his death, his name still stands atop a global empire.
    Raised on a small family farm in Missouri, Walt Disney arrived in Hollywood in 1923 with little more than a suitcase and a pencil. But he had something else. An idea-an idea to explore humanity’s foibles through cartoon animals. Now, I know it sounds obvious now, but only because we live in the world that he helped create.
    At first, Disney, like most entrepreneurs, did everything himself-he wrote, produced, directed, and animated. And animation is a painstakingly, time-intensive task. In the early days, it would take hundreds, if not thousands, of separate drawings to create a moving cartoon. But hard work was never really a problem for Walt Disney. Living on baked beans, and renting a one-room office for $5 a month, he believed he was on to something-and nobody could convince him otherwise.
    And Disney would need every bit of that conviction. Now, though the barriers to entry in Hollywood in the 1920s were low, the competition was cut-throat. But a charming rodent and the coming of sound allowed him to break through.
    Steamboat Willie, in 1928, starring an early version of a whistling Mickey Mouse, confirmed Disney’s belief that there was an audience-a very large audience-for what he wanted to produce.
    By 1933, Mickey was the biggest star in the world. And in that year alone, a cartoon mouse received 800,000 pieces of fan mail. Within a decade, Disney had transformed his one-person operation into a major studio employing a thousand animators.
    But Disney was a restless personality; he was easily dissatisfied with his own success. And he wanted to make a full-length animated feature. It couldn’t be good. It had to be great. It couldn’t be in black and white. It had to be in color. And it couldn’t just be in color. It had to be art in motion.
    It would be very expensive - far beyond what he had ever spent on a single project. But money didn’t really interest him. It was only a means to an end. That end? Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs.
    Three years in the making, it was finally released in 1937. And it was an instant and phenomenal success-worth every dime spent, every heartache he had endured.

      it truly is rare now to see anyone who comes close to "folk hero" status, the most recent example i can remotely think of is Tony Hawk, he was EVERYWERE through the 90s and early 2000's, staying the same chill cool dude he was when he started skating as a young teen in the mid to late 80's, he represented all the dreams and aspirations of us as kids and mysteriously vanished without a trace all while never skipping a beat or getting caught up in a single controversy, truly both of them were legends and I feel that today's world needs genuine role models more than ever to inspire and compel.

    If only Disney saw what happened to his company. It turned from a company of creativity, pure wonderment and imagination, to a shell of its former self. Buying out franchises and companies, the live-action remakes being unoriginal garbage, shutting down their most-beloved rides like The Tower of Terror and the motorboats, and most of their animated movies are cliched beyond belief. They disgraced what Walt was trying to accomplish, turning into a cesspool of bad decisions and utter greed.

    In 2003-04, I had the pleasure to work for Walt Disney Imagineering, one a live, interactive theater experience, to be installed at the Living Seas Pavilion in EPCOT, and then later copied for California Adventure.
    We, the crew from California, were sent to Epcot for the final installation and refinement of the technology, I took advantage of my employment badge which meant, with a few restrictions, I could go pretty much wherever I wanted on the park, but also "back stage" where the guests do not go. Epcot was a great place to work for the 10 or so weeks I was there because there were so many great restaurants. But the best thing was watching the families when the various Characters would great the guests. Seeing little kid's faces light up when they saw Mickey or Donald or Snow White was incredible. As I got to know many of the cast members (all of whom were unbelievably sweet), I was struck by the stories they would tell about Make-A-Wish Foundation children, Autistic kids who would never talk to people, but would talk to the Characters, and so on.
    Some of those stories still bring me to tears all these years later. Yes, it's a corporate giant that screws up from time to time (you try wrangling in 200,000 employees spread across the US, Europe and Asia), and yes, the parks are pricey, but to me, those kids having the experience of a lifetime made me believe in the message.
    It was the most rewarding job I ever had.

My mother told me that she was able to meet Walt Disney as a kid when my grandfather and mr Walt Disney were at my grandfathers house discussing something about the plans on the Pirates of the Caribbeans ride. My grandfather was also one of the few people to be invited to Walt's funeral. He was a great person from the stories I have heard from my family. I also truly believe Walt would be sick to see how expensive it is now to visit his parks. Walt Disney wanted his parks to be affordable so anyone could attend.

    Stop looking at who's speaking and listen to what that person is saying. I have no idea who that person is and I don't really care. He just relayed a message and that is what this is about. It's like listening to Martin Luther King's speech and complaining that he was divorced once or that his tie is crooked. That doesn't change ANYTHING about what he is saying.

    • @CatsWithShoes
      @CatsWithShoes Před 6 lety +6

      this is the mentality of the woman in a relationship with a psychopath, always getting back together and being abused again. words can be crafted to manipulate, you can sneak lies in under the veil of absolute truth by associating it with things that are undeniably true.
      Glenn Beck is someone people have trusted and got back together with, only to always be abused, and after a while it is pure defense to just turn that person off. If the message is so important, don't use such a liar.
      If the message is so good have someone else say it. you give such an untrustworthy person " good things " to talk about to build up their credibility again and Glenn Beck has been through this dynamic of building popularity for telling the truth then turning it into lies so many times that the people who know him for this know not to listen to him even if he is telling the truth it is only to gain trust to convince you of lies later.
      I hope this explains the situation to you. if it does not then i am afraid you are virtue signalling and don't understand the situation this one man is in, nor his history with the public.

    • @CatsWithShoes
      @CatsWithShoes Před 6 lety +6

      Ethoea - that's not what I said at all, you've created a strawman argument.
      He can talk all he wants, but people are not going to listen him, I am pointing out that if Glenn Beck in particular was chosen to be the voice of a message, it may have been a poor choice for this reason.
      I have no " authority " to decide who talks and does not talk. I do get to decide who i trust and who i do not trust, and I believe everyone does. Glenn beck has flip-flopped and broken the trust of so many people that i believe there are a large number of people that have suffered the lies of this ideological conman and will also choose not to listen to him.

      @SiMeGamer Před 6 lety +2

      Eric McLaughlin
      You are just making my first comment that much stronger. If Hitler was here and was talking about Capitalism, I would say the same thing. He is not promoting himself, he is promoting an idea. This is not some political campaign. I don't care how good or bad a person is if what I'm here for is the message which I do not subscribe to. I don't listen to this video and because it's PragerU I'm right away "BAM! TRUTH!". No. I'm listening to what he has to say, trying to understand it. See where I agree, disagree and formulate my own opinion. What if that same message was brought by nobody on the screen? Would you still not listen? This is the type of hypocrisy that makes us divided. If it's "god" saying it here on this channel or a serial killer, the message is still the same.
      "Do as I say, not as do". I don't like this sentence but it has a tinge of truth to it in that opinions and actions are separate. Human beings are flawed in that sense. If he literally goes against what he said in the video, it does not negate anything he said in the video. It just makes him a hypocrite. It's up to you to take the information given and interpret it in some meaningful way for yourself, regardless of who says it.
      Not taking a "bad" person's opinion seriously is just as ignorant as taking a "good" person's opinion without critical thinking. "Facts don't care about your feelings" - you can hate a person for who they are, but actions and words are different.

    • @CatsWithShoes
      @CatsWithShoes Před 6 lety +4

      so you don't care what source your information comes from and listen to everyone regarding anything?
      Your interpretation is that Glenn Beck is not promoting himself I suppose, but i believe he is. I don't think you will convince me otherwise, and I see him as a conman.
      While he might be telling the truth now, he will build up a base of followers and proceed to feed them venom later. He has done this several times. Wasting your time listening to him is foolish, seek truth elsewhere.. he might say it for sure, and I cede that this does not make in untrue or that we should rally ourselves against the truth because it is being said by such a person.. but that he is untrustworthy and listening to him speak truth would just be setting yourself up for a fall later.
      You might be some absolute paragon of discernment, but most people verify a few times then just tend to believe what a trusted source says.. Glenn Beck is someone that takes advantage of this.
      So I'm sorry that the majority of people do not diligently fact check absolutely everything that someone utters no matter whom they are.. and certainly in an iconic world we would all do this to the point where absolutely no lie would ever get by us and there would be true justice in the world. Perhaps someday all people will be such staunch research warriors as you, but i don't see it happening.
      This is the reason for bias against certain sources of news.. it is why i do not watch CNN, I do not read National Geographic, and why i do not listen to Glenn Beck.

    • @SiMeGamer
      @SiMeGamer Před 6 lety +2

      Eric McLaughlin
      When it comes to "news" or "truth" for that matter, I also avoid certain things. But I come here to PragerU for an opinion I might have never heard or contemplated before. This enriches my own philosophy and my view of the world. If it's news that I care about in any form, I check the sources, if I don't care I won't and if I ever mention it I have it in my head where I heard it and add that to my speech. Otherwise I'll be the one spreading "fake news" and potential misinformation. And as you said, most people won't do this kind of "research", but I think following someone who is consistently telling the truth is just as bad as following someone that probably tells a lot of bs. In both cases you can have either true or false information given in any particular case, and that is dangerous no matter how amazing of a reporter you are.
      Because I give the same critique to all sides almost equally (avoiding absolutely all bias is practically impossible after all) it's weird for me to see other people not doing that. As much as I support Laissez Fair Capitalism for example, I am still going to listen to socialists and capitalists alike and give their arguments a fair chance because there is always a possibility that even the tiniest thing in my ideology is fundamentally wrong.
      So sure, people can avoid him if they dislike him and don't want to listen to the opinion of such a man. But if they already sat down and are listening to him, at least hear what he has to say. Otherwise you are wasting your own time and that's kind of a shame. So the bias existing I get and I apply it myself to a degree, but that bias cannot be a legitimate criticism of the words themselves, only of the person speaking them aka not what this video is about.

    Elon Musk is in the USA to achieve his American Dream but he first gained success as a South African. Even when he came to the West he did so through Canada. Not that there is a problem with it. It’s just that this is the second recent video I’ve seen portraying his individual example as one of inherent US exceptionalism, when it didn’t work like that at all.
    I’m happy that the USA helped him achieve so much, but... Ben Franklin? Walt Disney? Steve Jobs? Elon Musk? One of these things is not like the other.
    I’ve got a feeling that he wouldn’t even be mentioned here if it weren’t for Bill Whittle and Co doing the same. Too bad no one addressed it there.

    • @emmettturner9452
      @emmettturner9452 Před 6 lety +1

      AlvaritoGT Probably not, which goes to show how much we take for granted. Americans generally expect opportunity to fall in their laps while motivated entrepreneurs from abroad come here to make a future for themselves (key word: “make”). Anyone who speaks disparagingly about the stereotypical Indian convenience store clerk while they pressure the government/taxpayers to pay for their education for a “better” job needs to take two steps back and look at who is really building our future. Entitlement is cancer.

    • @flyboy6392
      @flyboy6392 Před 6 lety +1

      Emmett Turner- Agreed, the world owes us nothing, family names that are now huge in business all started as nothings, the founders of Amazon started a little delivery company out their garage, now it's the world's largest online distribution and retail company. William Boeing started with a lumber company, and then branched into aviation and how his company is one of the largest aerospace engineering corporations in the world! There's a common theme with the big names in businesses, they all worked for their job.

    • @JimBarnetts1
      @JimBarnetts1 Před 6 lety +1

      Emmett Turner - "Americans generally expect opportunity to fall in their laps while motivated entrepreneurs from abroad come here to make a future for themselves" - You really need to spend a few minutes and look at the facts. Since 1965 we are not getting the people from abroad that want to "make" a future for themselves. We are getting the people that want to "take" a future from our kids for themselves. Just search for the welfare immigration statistics, native born Americans are way low on the list of people with their hand out. They even break it down by race. You'll be in for a stunning revelation.

    For some reason a lot of people want Walt Disney to have hated the Jews. It's not true. With some context, Jews were universally hated in all Christian and Muslim countries prior to about 60 years ago, still in most Islamic majority countries. There were tiny numbers of exceptions. Some countries and periods it was more universal and vocal and meaningful like the 1850s, some less vocal but still reality, and for thousands of years prior. Tacitus said Arabs volunteered to wipe the Jews out in 70 AD simply because of strong universal hatred of the Jews, and another Roman historian said Arabs were the first to burn down the temple, again because of universal hatred among them of the Jews, prior to even the Christian anti Jewish systems a few hundred years later, and the worst Islamic ones (Koran 5:82 among hundreds, and of course calling the Jews the descendants of pigs) Understanding that, Disney was most definitely not an antisemite! He had Jewish colleagues and benefactors, he was also part of clubs which didn't allow Jews. In other words he couldn't care less about the Jews, he likely had a non verbalized fondness for them seeing how many ideas he stole from Jewish animators like Betty Boop (who did a full length feature Snow White 5 years before his) among many examples.

    "In America the only limit to your ambition is your own imagination"...hell, not! I´m not American, and I agree that probably it is easier to succeed in the US than in any other country, but I do not think that statement can always be true... You can have a dream, an idea, a project and a feeling to make it possible, but sometimes it´s just impossible (indeed, you posted some months ago a video in your own channel saying exactly the same), simply because you are not lucky enough, because you have to deal with other problems, or because any other reason... A dream is a dream, when you can make it real, then it turns to reality, but you can´t live your entire life thinking you will turn your dream into reality, because you should also need to understand that sometimes there are some impossible things and your dream can turn into a nightmare if you only live for it without realizing the impediments and the limits... And it has nothing to do with the State or with the Government, each person has its own limits, responsabilities, circumstances, obstacles, etc. It´s nice to have dreams, but I´ve met lot of "dreamers" way unhappy just because they are slaves of their own dreams so thet they live in a permanent nightmare... Sometimes is better to stop, think and watch the reality, than to pursue a dream that, at the end of the day, is just that, a dream. I´m sure there are lot of "dreamers" in USA with pretty good ideas and projects giving up on them due to many different reasons further than their "own imagination". And "ingenuity" is not something exclusive in America or for Americans...

Granted, this is only because Marvel already had an established plan that they proposed regarding most of the MCU movies. Marvel just needed Disney’s money and influence to support their vision. It’s mostly just the comics that Disney has been horribly screwing up with. But that’s why when it comes to comics and cartoons, I prefer DC.

Which now the government just lets Disney sit on so many copyrights they don't even use anymore long after Walt's death. Which is ironic given that Disney uses so many Hans Christian Andersen tales that have been put in the public domain for their movies. So who exactly isn't relying on the government here?

      I guess I haven't looked much into Beck's positions on spending, monetary policy, etc. To me, being 'socially liberal' boils down to being moderate-to-liberal on 'the issues' (gay marriage, abortion, marijuana use, gun control, etc.) while retaining a conservative approach to fiscal and monetary policy. I do think clean, efficient entitlement programs CAN WORK inside the framework of a clean, efficient, limited state so long as they are fiscally sound (ie can easily be maintained) and encourage the unemployed to get back to work.

But you want government to control guns but not drugs.....so you just want big government when it agrees with you? no offense but i don't believe the "fiscal conservative/social liberal" makes any sense at all. it just sounds good to some..lol. Society as a whole was more "sexist" back then. Doesn't mean that Disney hated women.

    What's astonishing about it is that Walt Disney was at odds with Roy Disney his brother and business partner who was more of a businessman while Walt Disney was more creative. His brother Roy would actually tell Walt Disney please lower the costs while Walt Disney himself would say we want quality not cheap crap. It was up to Roy to find the money for Walt Disney's dream projects. Walt Disney Productions was in debt for many years but when they had Disneyland open overnight Walt Disney Company became rich. Walt Disney's dedication to his choice of work paid off.

    As someone who is currently, until the end of the video that is, procrastinating their own project to watch this, this reminded me why I pursue this path and why I choose to be independent rather than search for a job in this industry. It's about the art in of itself and the idea that it encapsulates, and the fun that comes with it is the reward for that work.
    And I tried to make an animation myself as a promotional piece...At the time I tried I was very lacking in skill, that was 2 years ago before I started working on the final form of the project. I'm gonna try to animate again sometime in the coming few months, but like he said, "it's a painstakingly time intensive task." It's satisfying as hell to see the final product though.
