The thing is there is folk music in India which also varies according to region with different flavors to each of them, and then there is Indian classical music which is different from Western classical music! The popular Bollywood songs are not pure classical music but are based on Indian classical and folk, sometimes also with Western influence.

Indian classical music and Indian folk music is very different from each other..
Arijit singh master in all genres... We called him complete soulful voice singer.
That last part is called a sargam in Indian classical.
Arijitsingh is also a classically trained singer.

Fun fact: I watched the whole concert, and it was amazing. The improvisation he was doing was a raag. He was trained in Indian classical singing at a young age.

That part you guys called scatting is actually called as "alaap" it's rythmic improvisation of the seven notes in Indian classical music " sa re ga ma pa dha ni "

The last bit what Arijit did there are all improvisation... It's called running over all the 7 "Ragas"(scales/notes)... Its Ragas are namely "Sa Re Ga Ma Pa Dha Ni" as Indian version, which is same as "Do Re Mi Fa So La Ti" in western classical notes... Singers in India have to go through these ragas over n over n over till they master it...
There are other examples of the use of Ragas...

You should check out "The Sounds of Nation" by Amit Trivedi (Composer) You will listen to different types of music and languages state to state and this performance was done by making all the sounds only through mouth!! Mame Khan also sang in this one (you have already reacted to his performance of Chaudhary song in your podcast) and that was also composed by Amit Trivedi! You were saying for that performance that "they are making such sounds from mouth that they don't even need the instruments" They have literally already done that You both will love this one it was amazing!

Yes ..all singers you've reacted so far they are trained in north indian classical music called as hindustani .. there is southern Classical Carnatic music and folk separately..
Specially Karnataka
The sargam you saw in shreya and arijit singh come from different "raag"s. These sargams are the heart of raags. Sargam is just collection of different notes that we use to train our voice to hone it to perfection.

Classical singing in the East (atleast in India, Pakistan etc.) is more about voice modulations and holding and changing notes vocally.

Which Shreya & Arijit both were doing... it's the basics of Indian classical music.
Mahesh Kale, Aruni Kirani. That's classical for masses. Kaushiki Chakraborty, Darbarfestival. That's classical for classical folks.
And mind you there is Hindustani, Carnatic, etc .. segregation in classical as well.
Then there is folk music, as there are people with different ethnic background, culture and regions, thus came up with their own different major instruments, and kind of sounds that's prevalent in their particular folk music. Then there is mainstream cinema music, which again, are in multiple languages and thus multiple industries. They present a blend of all these music with western touch. And don't worry about not knowing Indian music, it is enormous, even for us. Just enjoy, we love your commentary.

it’d be amazing if you guys could react to some South Indian singers next!! There’s a South Indian band called Thaikkudam bridge that do some great covers and originals. One of my favorites from them is called Nostalgia, where they put together a medley of old south indian songs :)
