      Yeah, Martin. I am a long time fan BECAUSE things aren't perfect. I simply love your Virtuose mind, with all of its perks.
      If you decide to record on the MMX, please leave in all sounds of marbles falling off, I would simply see it as part of the music the MMX produces. For me, imperfections, unexpected things, and all the nitty gritty stuff (to some amount of course) make life beautiful. It makes us excited, expecting and puts all our senses on edge. For me this makes me enjoy music even more.
      Perfection is a good thing to strive for, without it your music wouldn't be of such quality. But look at what you achieved! MMX is such a step forward. All your achievement and growth of this chapter deserve a hymn. A closure of this chapter so you will, and the opening of a new one. To celebrate all new opportunities and knowledge you have gained.

      thats what i think as well. Sure it isnt perfekt, but it cetainly works good enough for recording songs.

    The first machine was far from perfect, yet played a song that touched millions. Having followed the creation of the second machine from the beginning, I certainly would feel it's story incomplete if you never give it a proper send off. I feel like you haven't given it a chance to speak. Too worried it will fumble it's words to even give it a chance. It just seems so sad to leave it like this...

    • @whyarealltheidstaken
      @whyarealltheidstaken Před 2 lety +33

      I agree. But also, I have had big projects which I ended due to life changing circumstances, and didn't want to touch them for years. I was building a massive modular synth. My best friend and band member died. And I got out of all that. Didn't touch my synth. Didn't even listen to electronic music for years. But then.. Plugged it in about 8 years later. And had a great time. Made plans for more modules. Would get back to it, if I didn't have a kid and zero time now...
      Anyway, I can see how this is similar for Martin. This project could be tied to part of his past he doesn't want to think about for now. Hopefully some day we get a song or album. The machine is definitely capable.

      While I do share much the same sentiment, I think I remember Martin saying that the machine was actually broken... like some of it's (important) pieces were broken, and if replaced they would only break again. They were critical design flaws that just do not allow for the machine to work for long enough to do a proper sendoff without some redesigning.

    Ngl I'm disappointed you're not going to finish the MMX. I was emotionally and financially invested to watch you build this incredible work of art, that was by some miracle going to play beautiful music and break CZcams again when it debuted. You used to be proud of your non-form-from-function approach; that's personally what I liked most about it. I was amazed how "close to perfect" you got the MMX. Without you at least giving the MMX a swan song, I'm afraid I feel too emotionally drained to watch another machine be built/abandoned.
    Separate from my feelings about the MMX, I'm sorry to hear your father is ill, and that you and your partner separated; family is definitely more important than a machine that drops marbles. I wish you the best Martin

A machine that can't go on tour like you want, and can only manage a single take without serious finagling, isn't worthless to create. I don't think MMX was all that bad really, and would've been adequate for an album worth of songs and music videos, if not a tour. Please reconsider your plans because you've been building wondrous things that might not have been suited to big plans but would still have opened eyes.

    *Martin we did it!* 🎉 today I got my engineering diploma and I’m finally an event engineer! I was so lost after my A-Level but you journey showed me, that engineering + music is my key to bring a smile to the face of strangers. For the past year I woke up and the first thing I saw was the technical drawing of your creation with the words „pain is temporary, glory is forever“ above. I pushed myself so hard to live up to this and succeeded. Not a long time ago I thought about just giving up. I owe you not only my degree. I owe you so much more. You and your struggles for perfection taught me so much about myself and how to overcome my insecurities, you taught me how to create my own milestones and how to achieve them.
    Now I can look at the drawing from another perspective, the pain isn’t temporary, and the glory is not forever. But that doesn’t matter, because I learned so much more on my own journey. Your struggle became something I wanted to experience myself and I tried to become the one who makes art possible with the help of our technology.
    I got out of my comfort zone and tried to go through the world with open eyes. In conclusion it wasn’t about me making Art possible, it was all about meeting artists and being a small cog in the machine which in the end led to happines. But not only for myself, it happened to me that I got so much strength through the smiles of random strangers who just were in awe because of the experience they had in that unique moment. That was the first time I knew that I am on the right way. And in that moment I thought of you and decided to write this text.
    Not so long ago it was you who made me smile and pause the video I watched, just to appreciate the moment with all the joy your progress brought into my life. You were the one who gave me the push I needed.
    Thank you martin, you have a special place in my heart. Without you, your art and your music.. my life would be missing something.

    Giving up on the MMX reminds me of how I spent years never releasing recordings because they weren't flawless... Then eventually I started to realize that perfection is the enemy of good enough, and left flaws in, and now I'm releasing music much more regularly.
    Martin, you're on your own path, and I've encouraged you to just make music for yourself in the past, so I'm all for you doing that.
    But remember that perfection is rarely achieved deliberately, if ever.
    Good luck! The new digs look fantastic.

    Hey! Relatively longer viewer here. It feels like you consider MMX such a failure, not having made a full song, or not being able to have no issues. Maybe from the engineer's standpoint, its a failed prototype, but I think from the artist's perspective, and especially from the viewer's perspective, it was an amazing time. Just seeing the clips you've put in this video testing the MMX, even with just partial functionality, is a testament to how awesome the project was. Sure, maybe there were some design flaws, but you made a whole video detailing that and how you plan to fix that in MM3, and I think that's a win.
    My challenge to you is not to see MMX as a failure. It's a step in the prototyping process. MM3 will hopefully be the fully working prototype, and it'll be amazing. But there's no way you learn everything you did without making MMX. I am excited to see more of the engineering process for MM3 and how that's going to turn out,!.
    Hopefully your father feels better

    • @mdkc
      @mdkc Před 2 lety +10

      I feel like Martin might do better viewing the development of the Marble machine as an iterative process, rather than a project with a grand climax. I'd love to see not only a MM3 project, but actually MM4,5,6,7,8 etc... each iteratively improving on the last. As well as being a more manageable project it makes for more a more compelling series (and probably an overall better product at the end, given all the additional learning from multiple versions). I hesitate to call them prototypes, because I think if the MMX is anything to go by they will almost all be perfectly functional in their own way!
      Good to hear from you Martin - as you can see you've been missed! All the best to your father.

    One of the challenges of design and engineering is the false quest for Perfection over reliability. MMX seems like it is a solid piece of work, despite compromises and flaws. Great instruments have been made for centuries but no one has yet made a perfect instrument. No matter. We musicians use those limitations as discursive parts of the creative process. I hope you return to the MMX to make what music CAN be made with such a grand design. Like the designer, it can't do everything but it can do a lot.

    More than anything i hope you can see that the machine doesn't need to be perfect. I know you've been so fixated on wanting the machine to not make any mistakes, i think mostly coming from the frustration built up from all the trial an error that came with MMX, but the fact of the matter is that it'll always happen. There exists no machine that will be 100% full proof, and i think the moment you can see that the more you'll feel liberated by the baggage you've been carrying with the MMX.

    This whole project feels like how a person grows up.
    the first Marble machine: The ambitious child. It has so much potential to change the world, but it has to grow up, and understand the world more to make a change
    the Marble Machine X: The naive artistic genius: Still keeping up the work to do the best it can. But its so blinded by idealistic world view, though an artist's eyes.
    The Marble Machine 3: The Lively Grown Up: After so many fails, it has to learn to view the world how it is, but still keep up the artistic mindset. Trying to make everything good as much as he can. Asking help from other friends, and also uses the tools it gathered over those fails over the years. But this time, it succeeds

    So, as someone who's relatively new to this and has only ever seen the wooden marble machine music video, it seems like a lot of people are providing some level of criticism to this CZcamsr because of the following(?):
    - Lots of people funded/donated money for his 2nd machine, the MMX and he ended up never doing anything with it and kinda just abandoned it? (Did he throw them away or something?)
    - He became too overly detail-oriented and a perfectionist. Despite the fact that the machine was already working really well, and he simply just didn't want to make any music just because he was obsessed with tiny details when some marbles fell out machine already working really well?
    - He doesn't often take the advice of others for better improvements and often misses out on them, and would then later on actually come back to use said improvements that others gave?
    - He lost his way when building the marble machine as a means to once use it as an art form and play music with marbles, but is now just an obsessed "engineer" who just aims for perfection and lost his original touch of sight that the machine originally supposed to demonstrate the beauty of a marble machine?

    • @crutherfordmusic
      @crutherfordmusic Před rokem +7

      While those are criticisms people are making, the biggest criticism I have is that there's no real closure to the project. I think he was under a lot of pressure, knowing that the machine was far from finished, but having so many people invested in the project - financially, emotionally, and by doing actual work on it. And I think he wanted to get away from it. But he didn't really do a debrief, so it feels like he just abandoned the project and the community.
      And then he started on another machine, but that didn't get very far along either.
      So basically, I think the issue is a lack of communication. Ideally he would have done a video where he went through his though process and showed people the issues with the machine and answered all the questions - which is kinda, sorta did - but for the most part it feels like he just left. And now the machine has been dismantled.

      @@crutherfordmusic that sucks, I remember watching the very old video of the wooden marble machine a few years back and thought that making music with it was extremely cool. And I checked back just these past few weeks, and was confused why the guy never made any actual music with it.

      He explains that the machine never worked well , it was too unfinished to make music with it as it kept breaking at every turn. His videos were often optimistically showcasing it as working well but the truth is it was just bumming Martin out breaking all the time. I'm not sure about this most recent attempt doing the all-digital design first, except he said often if it doesn't feel like it'll work he'll just stop trying. I assume he's just taking a break from making videos, which he had every right to of course. If he decided or decides to stop entirely, I'll understand and respect that. I'm happy to hear you'll more than likely continue on with a new machine and new found knowledge, and I completely understand the move from France. But you owe it to the MMX to make a song on it. Forget about the tour*; forget about perfection. Make a song on it and show it to the world. If not for us viewers, do it for the droves of people who've had a part in it's creation and the sheer artistry it represents. Is it good engineering? Maybe not in the way you want it to be, but it's being displayed in a museum for a reason. It clearly can be used to make music as you've shown on many occasions.
    Let it sing before you let it sleep.
    *By this I mean forget about needing to tour with the MMX, not doing a world tour in general (new machine or otherwise).

    • @xxhellspawnedxx
      @xxhellspawnedxx Před rokem

      The MMX was so far from being a finished machine, though. Many pieces were provisional, the vibraphone was basically nonexistent, and certain parts of the mechanism wasn't designed to handle what they would be put through in playing the full instrument, if it was finished, or had already broken before the MMX was mothballed.
      So, we're probably talking about another 1000+ hours of time invested in a machine that is fundamentally broken, just to get that one track out, and just like with the first marble machine, the song would have very little to do with the actual capabilities of the machine, and more to do with digital production black magic done on a computer. It would be like promising a painting, then showing off a mess of taped-together pieces. It just wouldn't be a marble machine song, but a Frankenstein's Monster of last gasps from the MMX. And, as said, to the tune of another 1000 hours sunk into just repairing and replacing what is broken or missing, not for re-engineering what is fundamentally unsound design.
      There's this concept that applies to anything you spend time or money on. It's called a sunk-cost fallacy. Sometimes, throwing more money or time at a project just isn't worth it, because the idea is fundamentally flawed. This is a prime example of when it's time to call it quits, to say "enough is enough" and move on or start over.

    In software development you rarely start from scratch. In 99% of cases it's a bad idea, especially if you already have something that works. Building upon it is usually a better way of moving forward. Small improvements vs a revolution with many unforeseen consequences.
    And I'm talking about MM here, not MMX. If you decide to build MM3 from scratch as well, you are putting yourself (and your sanity) in great risk.
    But most importantly, take a step back, relax, and use this time off to reevaluate your life and your priorities. All the best.

      Totally agree. First of all, if you have something and that kindy works. You start to develop it. You grind and grind it, and it still works. At one point you realize, that thing just ain't working and you try to grind it more harder, and you try to add something new to it. This same shit happens every physical and non-physical thing. You made your child so big, that it actually dies away. Shitty examples: altavista, nokia, everything-you-know-15-yrs-ago. If you just keep "developing" and adding more shit on your basic shit, you're gonna die away. Overall, keep it simple when it works, and if it ain't work, keep it still simple.

    I think it's time for a new modulin, as a tightly-constrained project you can apply form-from-function thinking to and get an instrument you can play without a huge amount of engineering and fabrication time.

    This video made me cry. Start of an era and beginning of a new one.
    Starting watching your saga during my Freshman year of college, watched every video and always looked forward to each Wednesday even if the video's didn't always come out then.
    Your battles have always been a parallel to my own life.
    Now, I'm graduating from school and there's been many SO many hills and valleys but I'm picking up and moving forward.
    I remember once I built a robot arm in high school and after much effort, it couldn't move by the day of the competition because the servo's didn't have enough torque.
    My partner for the competition was crying because it seemed like such a waste of time to them but I just laughed because I was so proud of what I had built and learned.
    I then built another robot arm my Freshman year, it was okay but didn't work great. I also worked incredibly hard on another robot that caught on fire due to the electronics during a competition.
    So many projects and efforts that sometimes didn't feel as fruitful as they should have been, but from which I learned so much.
    You are not giving up on the MMX, you have built a masterpiece that is an incredible work of engineering and which many people admire.
    I don't think you need to prove anything, you have given us so much.
    Take what you learned from this project to build something great or move onto something else like music. It's OKAY.
    I just hope you share the journey with us all.
    Thanks,
    A grateful fan of 4 years.

    In terms of your machine .. the mixture of engineering and music are not always mutually compatible - take Leo Fender an engineer - they called his guitar a canoe paddle! Then Gibson's Les Paul, a work of art at 3 times the cost to produce. There is no right and wrong but in the end you have to decide - are you a musician first or engineer first. If you are a musician, then do it - and if an engineer - then one rule applies, and I've been there done that for 47 years, you cannot make this machine with 100,000 plus other 'engineers'. No slight on anyone, but history has proved that the more minds involved the less likely a completed result.

      Give one man a list from a menu and he'll pick an option eventually, give it to a committee and they'll argue for a month, then ask for another menu

      Crowd sourced design can happen if the lead engineer sets the proper framework and clearly defines the interfaces then allows the sub-engineers freedom to design in their space while they get feedback from the lead engineer. Most engineering projects happen this way. If the MM3 is going to be a success then that is how it will have to be. Martin's growth as an engineer has been on full display these past 4+ years and he has come a long way. I know that I shook my head at many of his decisions early on and most of those poor engineering decisions he has reversed course on and learned through hard fought experience the right way. I still think a marbel machine musical instrument can be produced that is robust enough for a world tour but we will see if martin is happy with it.

    Guy builds a machine he can't get out of the door of the room he builds it in, wants to take it on a world tour. Ignores comments telling him machine probably not suitable for worldtour for years. Builds studio in france, decides to move to sweden, builds music studio in sweden. Realizes machine will not work for world tour, starts new machine... Wants to integrate full vibraphone, ignores comments telling him probably not suitable for world tour. The point is reached where I believe nothing will ever get done here ever. But, tbh, I don't care, since I love seeing the process. Martin will never listen to anybody, will keep doing his thing, will keep failing and learning. the latter hopefully.

    Hey Martin! I wanted to say that I think you made a super brave decision. My dad, also a Martin and a music fanatic, passed away four years ago while I was abroad and I wished we succeeded in spending more time together (we weren't that close). The older I get, the more I think that building functional relationships with a few close friends and family members is more meaningful than functional, grand (marble) constructions and ideas. Looking at your community and Hannes, you seem to have done both, but I want you to know that I am truly impressed by, and a bit jealous of, your courage to build in the places that you think are most meaningful.

    Four years ago, I started watching this on my lunch breaks as a college student. Now I am a first year PhD student and your content will always have a special place in my heart. I will miss the MMX, but I know now more than ever, it will be done, the mountain will be summited, the dragon will be slain, the world will be toured. I know the pendulum of optimism and cynicism that you talk about. My entire academic career has been this battle of what I think I can and can not do. You’ve helped me through all of that Martin. Keep climbing. Glory is forever my friend. I’ll see you on the world tour.
