AND ANOTHER THING!
A response to a message I received. Paraphrasing for brevity...
"Hey, you mention you don't like Nietzschean philosophy. You should do a video about how you do like it next time. You know, to be fair!"
...no?
You can, though. I'm not obligated to "both sides!" something. It's a video essay. It's supposed to have a thesis. An argument it is trying to make. I don't owe a service to people to make the opposite argument to what I believe or pretend that the few good points to a concept are equal to the troubling, far worse points to said concept.
The pretense of neutrality is not an "honest" position. There is nothing honest about claiming the scales are even when they are not. It is not my duty to muddy the waters by saying "I actively condemn this...but also it's good, so what do I know?" If I made dishonest points, that would be one thing, but I don't believe that I have. I don't have to defend something indefensible to placate people who believe an abhorrent idea and a reasonable idea have exactly the same standing and benefit.
"I am campaigning for human rights, but TO BE FAIR, I will spend equal time campaigning AGAINST human rights." - something nobody has ever said
In short, I have no obligation to make your argument for you. Good luck.
Nietzsche valued power (violence?) more than people.
Nietzsche sounds like he would have been an obnoxious twitter user
No , he got severe headaches after writing for 30 minutes, so imagine what Twitter would do to him ?
Underrated comment.
Awesome comment
cogent wit lol
I think he would’ve been an influencer if he lived in our time.
Just wanted to add that a film which I think lends perfectly to a Nietzschean lens is Alex Garland's Annihilation. I like the model of a self loving woman as a better ubermensch than the typically angsty violent dude.
Nietzsche was a misogynist.
dostoyevsky pretty much predicted nietzche's ubermensch concept with raskolnikov's thesis from crime and punishment
That's a dig on nechayev actually.
Wasn't Dostoyevsky a tsarist bootlicker, even after being tortured by them?
I haven’t read Dostoevsky work yet but I find that incredibly ironic since Nietzsche did openly say that he was influenced by him. How in the world did he miss that?
This is a really good video to watch as I wear my new favorite T-shirt, "I am not a Nihilist. I am just depressed."
There seems to be a bit of a tonal difference between this, and your usual work.
I've not seen you cover Nietzsche before. It was great to see your take on his beliefs. Great video, as always.
Anytime someones describes themselves as "Nihilist" all I can do is think "Wow, that must be exhausting."
The Dude abides.
I consider myself an intellectual nihilist but an emotional idealist.
it is lol
I used to admire Nietzche but as time goes by most of his ideas seem to be taken straight from the Ancient Greeks; power for power's sake, to hell with everybody else.
I've heard a philosopher remark that, "Nietzsche is a phase that anyone interested in philosophy needs to go through"!
He's somewhat of a Socates contrarian.
I'm no philosophy guy but Nietzschean philosophy can't help but remind me of Objectivism in some ways, namely putting down the poor and oppressed and claiming those who are powerful are justified in having said power
So that was what Kanye meant with "Slavery a choice"
Yes, and it was nonsense then too.
This is a really good discussion. High marks on this, man.
I never understood the value of greatness and how people attempt to justify it.
THANK YOU! Neither do I
Same here. Focusing on greatness isn’t really a good substitute for low self worth or efficacy which Nietzsche was supposedly trying to reconcile.
Found this gorgeous relic at the bottom of CZcams. No regrets.
Is it possible for someone to raise their thumbnail game *too* much?
The number of times "Nietzchean" was said is giving me flashbacks to Gene Roddenberry's Andromeda
This video was spot on to a problem I faced in my mentality recently. My issue is that I am angry by how the working people of the world have been reduced to cattle and statistics and I came dangerously close to Ezra Pound's quote, "A slave is a man who waits for someone else to free them." I don't want to be lumped in with philosophers like this, so how do I properly interpret my anger and frustration at seeing the noble working class being subdued by the much smaller ruling classes?
I know what you mean, sometimes I catch myself getting angry when I see other workers supporting and arguing in favor of the system and the people who are exploiting us. When i start getting angry, I try to keep in mind that hundreds of millions of dollars are spent each year on the pro-capitalist propaganda we are bombarded with and that that much money buys really effective and skilled propagandists. Not to mention the violence capitalists use to subdue socialist movements any time they begin to gain traction. I still get frustrated but keeping these things in mind helps. I know it's not much but i hope it helps. Your comment is kinda old, have you found a good way to deal with the anger you mentioned, because I'd love to learn more ways? Thanks
As an Andromeda fan the opening kinda made me giggle, lol
0:12- Something that reminds me of a Kevin Sorbo science fiction show.
Best analysis i've seen on the movie.
Most videos are shockingly off base, well done.
Well stated video essay. Imo the issue of master or leader vs slave or commoner morality is better explained by Machiavelli. The Prince (a label for those in power) can bend morality to serve his/her purpose. The commoner follows the directives of those in power. This dichotomy certainly was in fascism. Only the fascist leader could flaunt rules while the common soldier was a pawn obeying leaders. In modern society religion can be replaced by nationalism, corporatism & so on. A modern society has rules / laws. Who are the modern leaders / Princes? Imo this leads to the iron law of oligarchy (by Robert Michels). Leaders naturally rise in any system. Politicians, CEOs, union/military/police/bureaucratic leaders, crime bosses all rule over their domains. The commoner can only hope to eek out some freedom while mostly going along with leadership demands.
PS. The Departed is a terrific film as it deals with these questions of leaders & pawns asking; ‘who really has power in this situation? What are the rules?’.
When the video shows the four boxes with German philosophers around 4:35, who's the bottom right guy? I know the others by their face (Schopenhauer, Nietzsche, and Heidegger), but I can't place that fella. Anybody know?
Gottlob Frebe. There is actually a link in the description about him.
Oh boy there’s a title to get lit for
So your major was on literature? Is there any site where you keep track of your readings, like goodreads? BTW, there is also a good documentary called Nietzsche And The Nazis if anyone is interested in the topic; there is also a corresponding book with the same title by Stephen Hicks.
Yeah, I have a Goodreads account, but it is incomplete to say the least. I started it only last year, I think, and it only has a hundred of so books that I remember reading. I don't keep books. I borrow from libraries or use subscription services like Scribd. So, I can't recall all the books I've read over the years. I just remembered last night that I read The Canterbury Tales in college -- a million years ago -- and added it. www.goodreads.com/review/list/66877167
Renegade Cut I totally forgot that you are not rating anything you watch, and the same goes for reading, it seems. Sadly you didn't add a favorite section so I wouldn't know what you would recommend personally. Still, thanks for the reply.
Somehow the whole slave-master morality reminded me of a foreign gem, the hungarian movie The fifth seal, you should definatelly check it out, very tought provoking movie.
Can't help but groove to the new theme music.
Dear Mr. Cut, Your work is fantastic and your channel is absolutely underrated. Hope the subscriber count will explode soon! You deserve it.
I know this wasn't the focus of your video, but do you think Scorsese actually had Nietzsche in mind when he made this movie?
No, probably not. That's just not what my show is about.
Yes! Scorsese is a genius!
I don't think that's really that important. Really, what is important is what we can gather from the story. Tho, considering Scorsese's repeated implemented use of religion in his movies including this one, I wouldn't be surprised if he did have this in mind while making the movie
Richard Wagner (no saint, himself) had some interesting things to say about Nietzsche.
"Richard Wagner (no saint, himself)"
Understatement of the century.
Oh God ! Nietzsche is my all time favorite !
I just read the tittle and I got excited.
me too.
13:36 Yet not everything is beneficial.
_Belief,_ just one word to counter perceived greatness... for the most part we don't know, we believe.
The background music sounds like Khalid’s song Paradise. Also, the quote “Nothing is true, everything is permitted” that’s used in Assassins Creed is a Nietzsche quote? Didn’t know that.
Wario Wuzo Actually this originates from the character Ivan Karamazov from the Dostoevsky novel The Brothers Karamazov although Nietzsche was a big fan of Dostoevsky’s work, although I think it originated from a medieval middle eastern philosopher, although I can’t be sure.
Philosophy aside, this is one of my favorite movies
I love this movie
I always saw religion and religious freedom as a part of western civilisation and not it's destroyer but Nietzsche always was rather melodramatic pessimistic in those things. Great video btw. Glad you covered another of my favourite films.:)
Curious about what Scorsese has to say on this.
So am I.
He would probably subscribe more to the idea of karmic justice brought about by the deception and sinfulness of the protagonists. He's very heavily influenced by the concept of Catholic guilt.
8:40 It’s interesting that Nietzsche considered himself a “free spirit” but if one examines his history, he clearly wasn’t nor swallowed his own teachings.
He self deprecated a lot in part due to mental illness but also because of personal problems that he never reconciled.
He’s has my sympathies but when I take that aspect into account, I can’t help but ask of what right he had to criticize other philosophers including his former idol Schopenhuaer on failing to embrace life’s hardships without restriction?
Costello valued Power, and did what he felt necessary to maintain his power...
Nihilism wasnt the sickness of culture due to slave morality, rather it was the sickness that came about from a loss of that morality through the death of god.
I do agree with a lot of what you say here though, great stuff!
I used to think I was diametrically opposed to Nietzsche philosophically. And while I do find that I disagree with most of his beliefs (I identify more with Kant's teachings) thanks to this video I found some I do agree with. Thanks Leon. Great job as usual.
No wonder Jordan Peterson loves this philosopher so much.
Neitche would’ve liked hinduism
He did, especially the Code of Manu.
He advised to read Manusmriti instead of Bible.
nietzsche sounds like modern altright in some regards. Npc talk ect.
im my experience Nietzche fans are college age and massive hipsters.... now this is just me personally and i know doesnt pertain to everything or everyone that is a fan... but man its what i see
11:55 that reminds me oddly of My Hero Aca
All I remember is how bad the accents were , save for marky mark lol
to be fair, it makes lots of sense for the "blessed are the meek" to be created by the jews. They were always the meek in history., way more than christians.
You must have way more interesting thoughts than I while watching a movie. I guess it's experience, knowledge, and and a more active mind to make conections easily.
I always wondered where these so called "Nietzsche disciples" are. I have never met one, not even on the internet. But I have heard many people complain about them. I have met obnoxious atheists, theists, marxists, conservatives, racists, "rationalists" etc. So can anyone show me an example of these people?
Philosophy collegies, my brother studied him and had many Nietzschean friends.
I’ve seen them congregate a lot on websites like Quora and Reddit. Their response is always the same whenever someone asks or questions the logic and morality of the German philosopher.
“If you think X, Y and Z, then you don’t understand Nietzsche and never will”, “Nietzsche would’ve laughed at the question” or “Once again. Your not supposed to follow Nietzsche”
Lol its pretty much just that. I’m not an expert on Nietzsche but based on the little that I’ve seen from Neitzchean disciples and depending on who’s answering, they either have the tendency to be condescending or ignore legitimate criticism towards his logic before acting as if the reader doesn’t get it.
Now I can stop scratching my head like "yeah, buuut" when I hear Jordan Peterson talking 30% less often 🤷♀️ 👍
Thanks so much. I tried reading him but he was too torturous. You saved me some headaches. He wanted everyone to be as miserable as he was.
I agree. When I get past Nietzsche’s edgy bravado, I just start to see problems with his logic. His whole “Ubermensche” concept is fictional which even he admitted yet wanted everyone to flock to it.
Regardless of what your views are on religion, by Neitzsche logic, he supposedly wants me to sacrifice one fictional system (one that at least provides unity or cause) in favor of another fictional idea that has no system in place or evidence of actually working.
While religion has its problems which he highlighted in his work, he’s not really getting to the root of the problem nor providing an adequate solution. Given how open ended he leaves his ubermensche idea, why should I listen to him especially when is argument for it is essentially “figure it out yourself. I’m not gonna hold your hand”?
Thanks for the analysis. What a wretched movie though, in my opinion...
Holy hidden blades Batman! The Assassins in Assassin's Creed are Nietzschian?!
Xavier Zabie not really cuz in one of the games the tenet is deconstructed and explained by one of the characters and the interpretation that’s given of the quote isn’t exactly like what Nietzsche would’ve meant it to mean.
Weird that a lot of the people who think this way these days tend to be conservative Christians for some fucking reason
6:46 'He knows that he doesn't actually need sex at his age'??? At what age does one NEED sex? #BitOfCasualAgeismThere
That's what the character says about himself in the movie. I'm quoting the character. It's not ageism, at least not on my part. Maybe the writer of the film, but even then, I won't venture a guess. I'm talking about what a character says in the movie.
Renegade Cut Aaah... well then! We’ll blame the writer instead! 😜👊🏿
Renegade Cut i hope that didn't come over too harshly. i binge watch this channel all the time! 🙌🏾
Yes. "God is dead" . So, we must take his place.
You pronounce Nietzsche wrong
Nope. czcams.com/video/MiecJa844_A/video.html
I know nothing of philosophy so i love videos like this. So when this Nietzsche guy is brought up is it reasonable to believe that the person who did it is a douchebag? or is more complex than that?
It's more complex than that, but it tends to be a red flag when someone says they base their worldview and actions around Nietzsche because he tends to be the favorite philosopher of some unpleasant people. Historical examples aside, modern examples include Richard Spencer. He famously claimed that he formed the basis for who he is via Nietzsche. "You could say I was red-pilled by Nietzsche," he said. The alt-right loves Nietzsche, and that might give you some idea of who is adopting his philosophy into their day-to-day lives.
There is absolutely some genuine value to Nietzsche's work. I don't disagree with all of it, but in the 21st century, Nietzsche tends to be the college freshman bro's favorite philosopher and the model for the alt-right and similar groups.

Shit I didn’t realize how awful nietzche’s beliefs were lol
Replace God values with new ones. Ever heard of Human Rights?
Apparently not. By Nietzsche’s logic, the strong are people who are willing to sacrifice the weakness of one fictional yet functional system that promotes unity in favor of another fictional idea that has no system in place nor evidence of working. Thats the power of his new values.
Lol I know that’s a harsh generalization but I feel that’s what his ideas amount to.
I find that some philosophy just shows how evil people can be, writing works upon works to justify their own terrible thoughts and deeds.
Nietzsche was a passive Nihilsit
Nietzsche would have been very happy with modern times.
I used to love Renegade Cut because I love any analysis of a film. But I'm really tired of every review on here having a strong lean to the left and liberalism. Leave politics at the door and go back to how cool and unbiased you used to be.
This has never been a review channel and has always been about politics/philosophy in movies. Where do you think you are right now? Do you need to lie down? How anyone can watch my videos and think "These are REVIEWS" is baffling.
This has always been the premise of the show. What you're complaining about is the PREMISE of the show. There's the door. You can go any time. I'm not going to change the premise of the entire show for your after over 300 episodes. Jesus.
P.S. - I'm not a liberal.
"This channel that has always been political has gotten too political and it only bugs me because I don't agree with the politics but I lake the integrity to admit it."
