    I commented on this video two weeks ago but just wanted to come back and tell you that mostly because of this tutorial, I can now swim front crawl and breathe with ease. It's unbelievable. I'm 36 and started to swim about 45 days ago, and it's been a blast. I've also learned the backstroke to a similar degree. I can't push myself forward with the frog kick yet, so breaststroke doesn't really work, but I'm working on it. Next is dolphin kicks. I wrote all this to tell everyone to just trust the instructions and don't give up. No matter the age or injuries you might have, it's possible to learn how to swim in a short period of time .       @@RocketSwimming thank you so much man. Your instructions are incredibly accurate and for someone like me who is all about details, they do wonders. I have a question if you'd be so kind to help: I Just learned the 2 beat kick for freestyle but I'm confused about the 4 kick pattern. Should I do three kicks on the side that I breathe and one on the other side or is it vice versa? There are videos on CZcams that show both.

In general, a common pattern is to do two kicks while your face is in the water and one kick as you turn your head to breathe. This can help provide a rhythm to your stroke and keep you moving smoothly through the water. However, it's important to find what works best for you and feels most comfortable.
      'd suggest experimenting with different kicking patterns during your practice sessions and see what feels most natural and efficient for you. Over time, you'll find the rhythm that works best for your stroke technique and breathing pattern. Keep up the great work, and feel free to reach out if you have any more questions!

I'll start the butterfly stroke after getting comfortable with the freestyle kicking patterns. It'll be fun to learn all four strokes in two months time. Funny how I was terrified of the deep end just a few weeks ago 😅

    A friend I swim with, and like me, an adult learner, often says that swimming is the thing he's done the longest, only to keep being bad at it. It really describes me too.     This is awesome as usual. I tried to do breathe every three strokes, but hyperventilated and would get dry mouth. I will do the breathe every second stroke, which is on one side for one or two laps, then switch breathe on the other side every two strokes for one or two laps. That is how I want to work both sides, instead of breathing every third stroke, which did not seem to work for me.

    Very simple explanation with demonstration of ease of body movement. It really inspired confidence into the practice for learners and beginners of freestyle swimming.       You're welcome! As for swimming in open waters.. I would suggest you to only swim in a pool as it's safer than open water. Use lifejacket when swimming in an open water and there should be a professional looking over you all the time! Stay safe.

    Hi Johnny, found your video useful and would like your advice as to why I struggle with inhaling whether 2/4 stroke. 4 stroke gives me more body balance and less sinking… but problem of choking when trying to inhale remains irrespective. I have been practising for more than 3months, till date not able to do front float as well.. thanks

      For your breath, take a step back and practicing breathing standing in place in the water. Grab the wall and lower your head underwater. Then practice the stroke on the wall with your breaths. Be more intentional about breathing out (exhaling). I’ve found adults forget to exhale so eventually they feel “stuck” because they can’t get anymore air in. Lastly, roll more onto your side or back so you have more access to cleaner air. A lack of rotation will keep your face too close to the water where more droplets can ruin your execution.
      As for floating on your back, make a big Y with your arms and kick your feet. Both your arms and your legs should stay up but if they don’t, send me a video of your attempts and I’ll analyze them for you for free!

    Thanks for the tip regarding bilateral breathing. I was struggling learning to breathe after every 3rd stroke but i did what you said in the video and started breathing every 2nd stroke instead and that has helped tremendously!

    First of all thank you so much. Your videos have helped me so much. I am a first time swimmer in my 30s. I have a phobia of deep waters and i am trying now to overcome that. I struggle so much with breathing. I take my head to the side and think that i have taken a breath but i can’t continue as i get out of breath immediately and stop mid way panicking.
    As per my swim coach, i am inhaling only down to my throat and not all the way to the lungs and thats why i keep going out of breath. What are the extra tips or tricks you’d give someone like me?

    Ok so I noticed today that the side breathing is way better if I apply that rrrrrreach. So do mention it. I got it from another video of yours.
    And also mention the relaxed hand and the pull of water with the base of palm and not with the fingers. Promising again 🎉

    Thanks so much for this video, i have a question about breathing. Should one be constantly exhaling underwater and only inhale when you come up for the breath, because you mentioned to exhale powerfully before coming up for the breath. So im confused about when i should be exhaling and inhaling...some people say exhaling should be constant ehile under water...

      Great question! When swimming, you should indeed be exhaling underwater. As you swim, continuously and gently exhale through your nose or mouth while your face is in the water. This helps keep you relaxed and prevents water from entering your nose. When you turn your head to breathe (in freestyle, for example), exhale any remaining air forcefully just before you surface. This makes room for a quick, deep inhale through your mouth.

    Try to pull with elbows instead of shoulders and whole arms, you only need half of energy. I learned this in soccer, kick with my knee and the foot is just following through. It’s faster and stronger.

    I tend to sink while hand rotation, and this happen more when I try side breathing. In hand rotation, it feels my hands and arms are stuff, if I try to listen them.. I am most likely to sink. Do suggest your solution for the same

      When you rotate your hand make sure you kick harder/faster and also do the rotation gently. Just rest your hand forward when your hand is above the water. When inside the water you have to apply force to push as much water as possible to go forward.     My problem is once I take one of my hands from the front, I feel off balance and my legs sink. I cannot do the arm movement at all. I’ve been doing beginner lessons for about 3-4mths now and I feel so hopeless 😢

      Are you kicking from your hips? Try to keep your core tight and kick from your hips. Keep your head down and look straight at the bottom.

    I really appreciate your explanation ! None clearer ! Even so, I continue to have a problem in freestyle. First, I am a 61 year old male and trying to learn freestyle so I can do laps. My problem : I can do pretty good freestyle while using fins or a pool buoy between my thighs. No fins or no pool buoy the stroke and kick are fine but when I attempt a breath everything falls apart. I have one eye in the water and one eye out. I have part water in my mouth but that's ok as I breath over the water that's there no problem ( with fins or buoy ) - why do I fall apart when the fins or buoy are taken away ?? Thank you !!!

It's great to hear that you're making progress with fins or a pool buoy, but I understand that you're having trouble without them.
      One possibility is that the added buoyancy from the fins or buoy is making it easier for you to keep your body in a horizontal position, which can help you maintain a steady breathing pattern. When you take them away, you may be struggling to keep your body level, which can make it harder to breathe properly.
      Another possibility is that you may be tensing up or holding your breath when you try to breathe without the aids. This can cause your stroke and kick to become uncoordinated, making it more difficult to breathe effectively.
      To improve your freestyle without the fins or buoy, I suggest focusing on your body position and relaxation in the water. Practice floating on your front and back, and work on keeping your body level with a slight downward tilt toward your feet. As you swim, try to stay relaxed and exhale continuously into the water. When you turn your head to breathe, keep one eye in the water and one eye looking forward, and try to take a quick, efficient breath without disrupting your stroke or kick.
      Remember to be patient with yourself and keep practicing. It may take time to develop the necessary skills and coordination for freestyle without aids, but with dedication and persistence, you can get there!

    Hi, I'm learning to swim freestyle. I'm having hard time trying to breathe. My coach often asks me to try to breathe by lifting head up in front. But this strains my neck muscle. I've seen your videos and trying to breathe from side. However i feel my extended arm sinks while breathing and I'm unable to continue after that. I feel my head doesn't rise up and unable to take sufficient air. Im also exhaling before breathing.

      1: Rotate your body: As you reach forward with one arm, rotate your body slightly to the side. This allows your mouth to clear the water for breathing.
      2: Timing is key: Coordinate your breathing with your arm stroke. When one arm is extended forward, turn your head to the side and take a breath.
      3: Relax and exhale: As you turn your head to breathe, exhale gently into the water. This helps to release any built-up air and makes inhaling easier.

      I will suggest you to start breathing out as soon as you start your hand rotation and once your mouth is about to get out of water your exhaling should complete. All you have to do is inhale as quickly as possible.
      Tip: Practice breathing in and out in a bath tub or bucket of water. It is possible that you can't breath because of the how the water feels on your face.

      It can be your personal choice but it's recommended to exhale completely and breathe in. You need to intake fresh oxygen for your muscles to perform properly. A lot of carbon dioxide in your body can generate lactic acid and it gives you burning feeling in your muscles.
      Think of breathing as normal activity. Don't stress too much about it. It's just like walking or running.

      Our instructor asked me to try floating with noodle today, I had a long standing fear for water, so he had a real hard time training me...with your videos, it was much comforting...still not so ready to remove noodle and trying to float even though I can do front crawl... thank you so much for the videos and explanations and your quick response...front crawl has improved a lot

    Why do I feel weird after exiting the pool. It's like I'm going to pass out and my eyes want to close. After some five to ten minutes I'm completely normal. Has anyone felt so?

      Feeling a lightheaded after exiting the pool is not uncommon, especially if you've been exerting yourself in the water. This sensation can be caused by a few factors, including changes in your blood pressure, dehydration, or even just the temperature difference between the pool and the surrounding air.       Make sure you're staying hydrated before, during, and after your swim. Take breaks as needed, and listen to your body if you start to feel unwell.
