  • The story of Sassi Punnu is a tragic romantic tale from Sindh, a province in Pakistan. It is one of the seven popular tragic romances from Sindh, often referred to as "Seven Queens of Shah Abdul Latif Bhittai," who was a famous Sindhi poet.
    The Story:
Sassi, the daughter of the King of Bhambore, was a beautiful girl abandoned by her parents at birth because astrologers predicted that she would bring dishonor to the royal family. She was found by a washerman who raised her as his own daughter.
Punnu, a handsome prince from the Balochistan region, heard about Sassi’s beauty and decided to see her. When he saw her, he fell deeply in love. To be near her, Punnu disguised himself as a washerman and began working at her father's shop. Sassi and Punnu fell in love and decided to marry.
Punnu's brothers were against this marriage. They tricked him by making him drunk on the night of the wedding and carried him back to their homeland. When Sassi woke up and found Punnu missing, she was devastated. Determined to find him, she set out on a perilous journey across the desert.
Sassi faced many hardships on her journey. Eventually, she died of exhaustion and grief in the desert, her love for Punnu remaining undeterred till her last breath. Punnu, upon learning about her demise, also succumbed to his grief and died beside her.
    Legacy:
The tale of Sassi Punnu is a testament to eternal love and the trials and tribulations that lovers often face. Their love story is celebrated in Sindhi literature and poetry, symbolizing the ultimate sacrifice in the name of love.
