  • Replacing the power supply with another one for sound quality reasons can pay off hugely. But not always. What kind of power supplies are there and what one to choose.

      What type is the ifi iPower Elite?

      @@ccfunksterit's a switch mode power supply. I use a couple of them.

      I used the s booster on the node, but returned it. I like the ifi power elite better. Seemed more smoother with a wide sound stage. Liked it so much , bought a second one for the chord qutest Dac.

    I bought a LPS for my Schiit Modi+ DAC. It was very well made, with good quality transformer and components. It’s sucked the life out of the DAC - it flattened the soundstage and reduced dynamics. The sound became lifeless. The SMPS was far superior, with a much livelier, dynamic delivery. A LPS doesn’t guarantee better sound.

      I've experienced the same type of thing with different components & aftermarket PS's. It's not always a perfect match.

    • @TheHansBeekhuyzenChannel
      @TheHansBeekhuyzenChannel  Před 26 dny

      That would mean the LPS wasn't of sufficient quality. Or both of you prefer the influence SMPS's have on analog circuits.

      Interesting contrary experience 🤔 to mine, I have had total success with every LPS replacement. Seems there is no 100% silver bullet.

      @@TheHansBeekhuyzenChannel well I had similar results like what you had mentioned in the video. My first experiences were with a streamer & a switch. I bought 2 LPS's because that is what everyone was raving about. I felt it was an improvement but not a "Wow" moment. Later on I picked up a SMPS IFI Elite to use on my Dac. I did not like it. I tried the Ifi Elite on my streamer & the results were much better than the LPS I was using on the digital streaming "transport". And the LPS ended up giving better results on the Dac.
      So I do think that there is much truth with using Switch modes on digital & LPS on analog out products. I wish I would have known this a year or 2 ago. I now use the Ifi Elite's for digital & Super Farad 3 on my Dac. I have used No Name China & AfterDark LPS in the past & they were a waste of money.

      @ChicagoRob2 The sound you describe with the SMPS is to my mind probably inferior and the “much livelier, dynamic delivery” you describe might well be due to noise artefacts due to distortion created by by the high frequency noise from the SPMS. Those words you use are alarm bells in my experience. So are descriptions such as more sound stage or a more detailed sound. Mostly such sound ultimately results in fatigue and a feeling that one wants to slightly reduce the volume.

    I have 2 SBooster power supplies, one for my ADOT fibre kit and the other for my Chord MScaler. I first had the SBooster on loan, which I used with the ADOT, and was really surprised by the overall improvement. For me, it is much better than the more expensive Plixir.

    In general, the world will pretty much move over completely to switch mode supplies, simply because of regulations for efficiency that linear supplies won't be able to meet. These switchers seem fine as long as they are well filtered and high frequency leakages are kept to a minimum. Comparing simple wall warts today to those of 20 years ago certainly confirms this trend. Almost all of them are now switch mode types. As for substituting a linear for a switching type, in many cases, as you pointed out, it won't make a difference because a good number of products have their own charge pumps built in that allow for using a single supply that is then converted into a balanced dc supply. These are basically small switching supply modules that don't care what kind of power supply is used in front of them. When I worked at Sony in the late 70's, they were already playing with switch mode supplies in their higher receivers and integrated amps. They called the unregulated supplies "pulse power supply" and the regulated ones "pulse locked power supply". Unfortunately, they were pretty unreliable and the cause of many service complaints. And that's one other point: a linear supply is usually dead reliable. The same can't always be said for a switcher, which uses many more parts and stresses the electrolytic capacitors much more.

    Some manufacturers propose their external PS as an upgrade. So you should be sure to have an adapted PS for your component and get a better sound......but at what price ! In these case the price of the PS reach the sky. Excellent explanations and topic but difficult answer to the problem.

    The difference with the use of an LHY 50v LPS for my Volumio Rivo over the provided switcher was absolutely staggering. Everything became way more open, balanced, impactful, sense of strain was eliminated. Everything became REAL.

    Great great post! Very detailed and impartial which clearly lists out the pros and cons of both types of PS. I oft find an LPS , while provide darker background and cleaner sound, at the same time, it tends to slow down the music , dynmaics , rthythmic progression and "excitement" of music. What's your view on it? Do you recommend a few LPS which has best of both worlds?

    "Batteries are the nosiest solution"... does this mean buyer's of Stromtanks (sold as being "quieter than grid power") are fools?

    • @TheHansBeekhuyzenChannel
      @TheHansBeekhuyzenChannel  Před 26 dny

      I have no experience with Stromtanks. so I can't say.

    • @gioponti6359
      @gioponti6359 Před 25 dny +1

      2 things - to my understanding Stromtank supplies AC, i.e. recreates a 50 or 60 Hz signal from DC. If regulated properly this could be low in noise. Secondly, if you have many cells in parallel, noise should be down, current delivery up, and internal resistance down too. Which is why Stromtank and a powerbank are 2 very very very different things. Not only but also wrt cost.
      Let me add one thing: powerbanks provide 5V output for usb, but li cells dependent on their chemistry have various different voltage ranges, dependent on temperature, their state of charge etc, typically on cell level a nominal voltage of ca 3.5V. So how to get from 4.1 or 2.9V to a stable value of 5V? You add a dcdc converter that switches current flow around inductors (coils), filter the voltage at the and with a little capacitor to get a so so smooth voltage, sufficient to charge your phone. But usually not ok in a high end system, budget or full monty.
