- Calcium buildup is a problem many reptile keepers face, especially those with partially aquatic animals like turtles. In today's video we test four of the common methods to remove it and see which works best! I know what I'll be using from now on!

So the interesting thing here is there is ph and then there is activity of the acid. Sulfuric acid is one of the seven strong lewis acids and will have a far stronger reaction. The lemon juice would form calcium citrate which is insoluble in water meaning it might loosen some of it but it would likely put some back on.
I remember we made that in Chem 101 so I was waiting for her to mention it
Sulfuric acid is the devil's brew, I swear! I'm terrified of the 96% stuff. XD
@@phangirlable as you should be lol
Thank you! I was going to have to go Google it, because I’m a smidge obsessive, and I couldn’t remember the reaction. Yeah, I switched careers, and haven’t needed to know a damn thing about chemistry since the early 90s, but I still needed to know what happens when you use lemon juice on limescale. I should probably see someone about that.
Thanks for that analysis. Know nothing about chem but still fascinated. Makes sense considering dif reaction produce dif products. Really thought the only factor was PH level.
Own no reptiles, have no need of knowing how to clean a tank, still watching an 11 minute video how to remove calcium build up 👍
me too,me too
I've had my 1st corn for a few months and I was actually wondering about this, so perfect timing for me haha
Well, if you live somewhere with hard water you'll likely need to know how to clean it anyways :D
I have semi hard water, soooo my rationale is I STILL FIND THIS VALID!!! Now, for the rest of the videos, I have nothing.... But we don't talk that....
It's a great tip for cleaning your shower too
Love how the leechy was just trying to chill whilst she’s holding the tank
Ya
He might have expected he was going on a wild ride 😂
Yess I needed this so bad for my turtles, it's so difficult to get the water buildup off, especially when you leave someone to take care of your turtles for a week or two. That was a mistake, it took ages 😂
Twix move to wales 🏴 you not only have A dragon on your flat but you also don’t have any problems with water buildup
Softwater is the best water!!
If its real bad just soak it in a hot water and vinigar solution (maybe 1 part vinigar to 10 water [preferably distilled water]) this is an interesting video but the chemistry is quite a bit more complex... like the fact that there was a strong light on the peroxide even changes the results
And if they had each been spritsed with deionized water before wiping that would precipitate out other compounds and....... well like I said its complicated
Okay, what?! I was literally just thinking about this with my old crested gecko tank (they just had a upgrade)! I have really hard water where i live so even water conditioner doesn't do much. You wizard!
same! I just filter the sh*t out of the water...
Have a filter before the tap, then fill a external filter and use that water for everything but cleaning
Water conditioner wouldn't do anything for hard water. You need to dilute with RO water.
Me who doesn’t even have a reptile bc my parents won’t let me but still watches all the videos with a lot of passion:
❤️👄❤️
Wait til you're 18 love, that's what I did! Now I have a family of 20 reptiles, 3 amphibians, and over a dozen arachnids (and growing)!
@@IrieRogue WOW! Thats really cool!
Thats me too. :(
Wait til you've got a place of your own. You can also use the tips in this video for your bathroom. I use vinegar for my glass shower door and it works great ;)
Cleaning vinegar is also very cheap.
Why can about thousands of people agree with this comment??
I don’t even have a pet that lives in tank and I am watching this. Emily could literally explain astrophysics and it would make sense and I would watch it.
Me: seen every snake discovery vid
Emily: posts a vid
Me: clicks as fast as flash
Vid: how to get (I forgot wut it is called)
Me: eh, if it’s a vid, I’ll watch
same
i was going to like your comment but then i realized you have 69 likes and i didn't want to ruin it
Calcium build up off .
The way you make science so fun is so entertaining, I have learnt so much from you and your content is one of the factors that inspired me to study different classes of science
mans really said “ while y’all are messing up lemme take this dump 💩
Everyone else: watching Emily remove calcium buildup
Me: OoOoOo nice backsplash
Thank you so so so much for making this video!!!!! I have a 55 gallon tank i turned into a frog enclosure. The previous owner had pond fish in it. I had tried cleaning the stains off the glass before building my bio set up with no luck. Well after finding some issues recently in it tore it apart and wanted to tackle the stains. I have everything under the sun, looking up many videos and info online. You guys saved the day. I'm in shock as to how amazing and fast the ph down worked. 10/10 recommend. Thank you so much for all the info y'all always share.
A low pH does not automatically mean that it is a stronger acid. It depends on how well the acid dissociates in water. That means mixed with the water.
Greetings from Bavaria in Germany.
I love your videos
Yup. It also depends on the concentration of the acid too.
I'd be interested to know if she used the 4% or 8% concentration for vinegar.
@@meredithnavin1358 She used 6% vinegar.
@@nathangauthier1574 thanks! I use 8% and it works pretty good
There is so much more than even that, for instance it could be a double acting acid and then it would be so much more complex or the specific solute may not be reactive with the solvent and....... well I really love chemistry so im going to shut up before I get too esoteric
Ich musste fast weinen als sie meinte pH von 2........
Emily: explains
Me: oh yes I got it now
My teacher: explains
Me: umm can you repeat that again?
Always and forever, Emily teaches better that any teacher
7:30 yeah, it is NOT pure sulfuric acid 😂😅
I'm a science student and your experimental design gives me chills, it's amazing
thank you for this!! I was just wondering how to clean the calcium off my tank when cleaning day comes around. I'm a new reptile owner and love your channel!
So happy I came across this video. I have a large aquarium I bought used and it has a huge calcium line about 4 inches thick along the top of the glass. The last owner I. Pretty sure neglected the tank before selling. I tried to remove it using vinegar nothing. I'm gonna try the ph down now. Thank you so much. Seeing that huge thick line on my viewing panel has been bugging the heck out of me.
YOU DID EVERYTHING PERFECTLY:
So if someone steals this, I can offer some advice to quiet critics.
Now after the fact, I would have used Deionized water as a control. It would not have affected the results, but I think the pH down is watered down sulfuric acid. Deionized water is the only water you can be assured will not add any more build-up.
It was a very interesting video
Im pretty sure it isnt "watered down" its just a lower concentration (which pretty much means the same thing but at the same time makes all the difference)
However i believe they do have inhibitors in it to prevent certian reqctions from occuring, like how Draino has other chemicals to keep the acid from eating the pipes
To get even dilute pure acids like that is a chore, the best i can do is 35% HCl from walmart as meuriatic acid
@@ConstantChaos1 According to my research:
API pH Decrease is less than 10% sulfuric acid, the other 90% is deionized water.
pH Decrease is Sodium Bisulfate, Water. Maybe Top Fin changed the formula? But they do not have a safety sheet that describes the concentration.
@@LuckyStone888 yes, its diluted, not concentrated H2SO4
Thats a molarity of i think 3.9? I might be off on my maths, but thats not watered down, when something is watered down it is less concentrated than it claims to be, instead this is dilute, meaning it is less than saturated
@@ConstantChaos1 ok thank you
I was just brainstorming ideas because I've struggled in the past with how much I have to spray down my ball pythons enclosures. How convenient! Thank you!
I know this probably isn't the place to mention this but I really want to thank you for helping me work with a rescued ball python that was really defensive and angry seeming when I got her from a friend who couldn't home her 6 months ago. She now lets me hold her and is far less afraid of me now. (truth be told because she was so defensive she freaked me out a bit at times too.) Thank you so so so much I cannot tell you how grateful I am of all your tips and tricks. We can't thank you enough! (Incase you were curious her name is Munchkin
I've been using lemon since forever. The stuff you use for baking. Works great. I also use it for my water containers in my enclosures. I just let it soak for 5-30 mins and then I wash it off and rub it dry. I don't need to fear that my snakes might swallow some leftovers cus it's just thin lemon juice in the end.
I just love how educated Emily is!
Hi I've just come across your channel and I found it very informative. I'm a cleaner and I struggle with calcium buildup on showers a lot! so I'm certainly going to give your recommendations ago. Thank you for sharing with us. May God bless you and your family and keep you all safe! 😇🙏🙂💐 from Australia🦘🐨🧸
Leachie poops are so gnarly; my heart goes out to you both.
Also, neat-o! Imma get me some pH Down
Man I was late I had a google meet for school 😭😭😭😂😂 school made me miss one of my favorite CZcamsrs
THANK YOU SO MUCH! i was about to go out and buy another fish bowl, instead i bought the ph down and it worked like a charm! my fish bowl looks brand new again!
I like the idea behind this. You just need repeated trials, and you could have easily made it a double blind experiment. A slight difference in the scrubbing motion could lead to drastically different results that would be neutralized with repeated trials. And since you had a preferred result, you could have subconsciously used a more vigorous scrub on that one, so it should have been blind - in other words, a different person should have run the experiment, and they should not have known which caustic agent they were using for each sample.
Great Video. Two things: You have to use NON-Scratch Pads or Magic Erasers. Second when you use a Razor use smooth strokes not back and forth as it will scratch glass. We use Unger blades for window cleaning from Home Depot. Like I said Great Video one of the best I have seen.
I have been hesitant to try to clean the glass in my terrarium because I have live plants and didn't want to harm anything, this is a great video for me
Everyone else: learning about PH from the wonderful Emily
Me: Thats a really nice new brick like wall😍
Thanks so much for this video!
I just got an opd tank from someone and am planning on using it for my Mice but I wanted go remove the stains from it.
I was afraid of using vinager or lemon juice because of the strong smell so its good to know I have a better option with the PH Down stuff!
This has helped me a ton! I’m gonna be using this where I work as well now thank you!!!!
I really love these kinds of testing videos!
Another very informative video! Thanks for all you do guys :)
I was a little confused at first since this isn't really the content I expect from this channel but I thought your findings were super interesting!
I love your shirt Emily, and I also love all you videos because I learn so much.
Thank you so much for keeping me calm during my shots
This is extremely helpful thank you so much! Amazing video!
I always use half and half vinegar & water. Usually works good for me, glad I have some new options now. Thanks!
I just tried this out and the Peroxide worked to a point, but the Vinegar was the bomb!! glass became crystal clear! Great video! Thanks for posting this! 😎👍
Enjoyed another perfectly educated video, I don't plan to get reptiles in the future but I do enjoy your videos. I love watching your unboxing fan mail videos I try looking for the other ones but you have so many I want to watch all of them but you don't have a play list for it 😖 anyway love your videos can't wait for the next video 🥰🥰🥰
Reckon I'll be using Sulfuric acid to clean my calcium buildup! My gut has never been wrong, looks like yours is on point as well Emily!
I wait for you vids like Christmas and I hope to be one of the first to visit the ficility
Your videos always help me thank you!!
Used this info to clean the hard water stains on my bong didn't realize i had sulfuric acid handy in the fourm of ph down. Thanks!
Emily: talks about glass
Me: teach me more master
Love your content, keep it up!! Amazing video this video is helpful :)
I just threw a tank away because of water build up but glad I know now!!! Love all ur videos!!
Great to know. And great timing I’m going to move my Mexican black king snake into my ball pythons old enclosure and still has that builds up from when I used to missed it
This was really fascinating. Thanks for sharing.
emily i used to watch you when i was younger and i cant belive your still here !!!!!
Love you and ur channel. Im getting my first male hognose snake on sunday. Hes a 15 month western evans hypo hognose. Xxx
I wish you had tried bar keepers friend, lots of fish keepers are using that now a days but good to know that sulfuric acid is better than vinegar!
omg I never thought I would be talking to my favorite CZcamsr I can't believe this is happening I am so excited
yep
Emily, I don’t even own a reptile and I’m interested. How does one sound so interesting no matter what they’re saying, whether it’s how to incubate eggs or how to remove water buildup, I love watching your videos
If you live in an area with really hard water (I live in San Antonio, which has some of the hardest water in the country), do not get an acrylic enclosure if you plan to use tap water in a set up AT ALL. Even though these methods will get most of it off, it seems to settle in little pores or something and it won't all come off.
I would just like to say this came on the perfect day for me right before this I was trying to clean my turtles tank!
I use vinegar, it might take a little more work than the acid, but it is dirt cheap and I always have it in the kitchen. Great video!
I love that idea
Your gecko is so cute ❤️
YESSS This video was desperately needed :'D
I LOVE YOUR CHANNEL
U ARE THE BEST
KEEP DOING YOUR GOOD WORK
I don't have any reptiles but your ph down tip from a previous video did wonders for my shower door.
Thank you this video is very helpful i have a saltwater tank 75 gallon with fish in it and the bottom half has hard water stains i now have an idea how to clean it
I just want to say thanks this is helpful
Thanks so much Emily! Thanks to you I now love snakes and got one as a pet!
These information videos are great, the animal videos are great, you guys are just great!
This is the exact video I was looking for!
Love your vids and dis is what we needed
I've been early before, but i have never been this early, and i haven't even gotten the notification yet

Bar Keepers friend can work really well as well....great educational video as well
Interesting! I've noticed this on my snake tank but wasn't sure what it was. Guess it's just from the humidity in the tank? I don't spray it often but do have a big container of water for drinking/soaking that keeps it pretty humid in there.
Your back splash looks great!
Hello i whatch you at my school and we learn from that and i find u rlly enertaining
SCIENCE EDUCATION FOR THE WIN! This is a wonderful example of how to do a pretty straight-forward experiment with a control for comparison, and all 'a that. I hope a sceicne teacher sees this and someday uses it for a class, cuz this is a GREAT way to make the scientific method understandable and applicable to daily life!
Awesome! Sadly I don’t own any reptiles... but I sure know who to trust when it comes to cleaning a water tank just in case I get one in the future!
Looks like Emily and Ed added some nice tile to the kitchen backsplash. I’ve been doing Covid renovations too! Lol
I have no tanks but I got a window with calcium buildup and I've been looking for ways to clean it. Thanks! :D
Welp, that didn't go well. I was on a different, much larger window and I was using a squeegee. I realized it's not only dirty, but has a lot of build up. I couldn't just use a bucket of vinegar to dip the sponge of the squeegee, so I had to dilute with water. Didn't do anything. About half a bucket and a cup of vinegar, home made stuff, very strong, probably more than 6%.
Vinegar is cheap, and useful for many cleaning projects. There is also the part that you don't have to wear gloves unless you have really sensitive skin when using it. It also removes odors very nicely, even from carpets, and it doesn't damage most fabrics.
I needed this thank you
Thank you very much. Extremely informative.
This is amazing! Thank you!
Super cool! Great info!
Hello i love what you do, you guys saved my snakes life because i banged yuor vids. Thankyou so much 😍
I received the rex fanny pack for my Autistic son (8 years old) a few days ago. He wears it literally everywhere now. Thank you!!!
Thank God! I have been wondering how to get rid of it for a while
I am about to move and need to clean my tanks. Perfect timing!
holy moly I love your top I have the image that's on your top as my laptop background
I love your vids and your vids are very interesting
Nice video as always, but I think best way to mitigate calcium build up is to prevent it in the first place, try using RO/DI water
I grew up in TN and had zero issues with calcium build up...then I moved up north...I don't miss the south, but I do miss that artisan well water!
Thank you for this video!!
can you guys make a video on how to set up a tank"competition"
I needed this!
my leopard geckos tank has a whole build up on it so thank you for this video I didn't know how to take it off
Very educational! Thanks , guys
I LOVE your eeveelution shirt!
For me, cleaning vinegar, now comonly sold in stores here in Spain, worked great!
Thank you for this!
Can we just admire how awesome Emily's shirt is?
