"This is a plea, not a punishment. Country music is rooted music, music that's frommm somewhere, and that reverence for history and tradition is precisely why I love the genre. I am a continuation of my family's love of singing, it's my inheritance and I'm grateful for it...but I also inherited a long history of brutality and exploitation that's by no means unique to my bloodline. My 'culture' is wrought out of hardship; as Americans we never 'chose' this inheritance, but it's our responsibility not to shy from the bright light of atonement, and I hope this song asks 'What's worth keeping?' loud enough for you to hear. Pretending systemic inequality isn't real doesn't make it go away; you're not being blamed for our past, just being asked to help with our future."

You stand tall and walk against quite a wind. Bravo
Nick, this song is really something - very powerful lyrics. I can't wait to hear the album. Wishing you the best. Your music does a lot for me and I hope you know that's true for many people. Keep it up!

You are truly an American gem. Please never stop.
How can the land of the free be the home of the slave. Fantastic, I fucking love this guy
It's hard to love something
that don't love you back
Your dream's been their nightmare,
there's bones 'neath the track
Was it evil in their hearts, or
restraint that they lacked?
I'd never love a land that didn't love me back
Ten generations on land that they stole
They torched the prairie for plantation,
broke the mountains for coal
I ask what's worth keeping
can we be proud of what's fair?
Oh, it's ten generations just gasping for air
In the cold, I know
It's hard to speak highly of what keeps you down
There's blood the cotton,
stone graves on the mound
My conscience is woven to the rope on the bow
So keep your eye on the light,
and your hand on the plow
Why seek to converse in nothing but name?
We know Rome's been burning
and we play a rigged game
Our heritage is hate,
though there's plenty to save
How can the land of the free
be the home of the slave?
Is this the land of the free?
I’m pretty sure I’m in love with you Nick

Ozarks speak through the melodic yodles of this country gentleman. May the world applaud you sir
Thank you for your work. In hard times, people either pull together or rip apart. The tendency is to pull apart 🙁.
Absolutely beautiful. Thank you for sharing!
I'll love you back just for the whistles!! Sheesh I love it!!!
It's like Slim Whitman and Jimmie Rogers reborn!!
What a incredible song, made my day
Beautiful
Frigging amazing song
"Just know that if the world hates you, it hated Me first". "We know we are of Love/God and the whole world (every system) is under control of the evil ones(Anti-Love powers and principalities ( (
I feel like this song will go over a lot of peoples heads and I love it for that.
I can’t see how. He’s laying it on pretty thick.
Yea it doesn’t really get more direct of a message than this.
You're not alone, brother

If you could just sing me to sleep live that’d be great. Thanks 💕
In light of the 215 children found buried at Kamloops Indian Residential School, this song hits me hard as an indigenous person in Canada, a country built in native blood
@Preston Billachick except the universe.
Keep it up!!
Damn good one
Man, that was fuckin beautiful
Flawless, I'm so sad that it took me so long to find this
Love to see a NS and Tedeshi Trucks collaboration
Please always tell me there is going to be this kinda content for the one man/woh man bands round here! I absolutely want to learn some of these songs but the whistling and yodels are pretty advanced and I have something to give me goals towards.
Somewhat feels like what would happen if Mac Demarco got a mullet and a trailer car

Damnation. Not one comment.
I say you are brave.
Intense, brave, beautiful.
The native and black people of america feel this

A bit more poignant now I'd reckon.
I hate this lousy country, it could be so much more and we keep getting dragged back by the usual crowd.
