    Martyn's fingering was impeccable! Not a digit out of place --- throughout this entire setting! His style is second to none. He was a consummate professional, and without doubt, lived his music as he played it. I can envision young Martyn listening to the folklore on his mamma's knee; all about MacCrimmon and his fateful premonition of death. His life oozes out through every pore as he plays this Piobaireachd.... the word which loosely translated means, "the act of piping". Martyn displays this life-giving act with grace, vitality and all of himself -- as only Martyn could. May God bless and keep you in his everlasting and ever-loving arms, my friend!

    2005 was a tragic year when we lost Martyn, he was a phenomenal musician and creative talent. To add to the tragedy of a young force of nature cut down before his time, barely a year passed before another great young piper/composer Gordon Duncan also passed away. Like Martyn, Gordon lives on in our memories and in the music they have left behind. I was fortunate to have been able to share jam sessions with them both of them. Rest in peace Martyn and Gordon! You are both very much missed!

    I asked Margaret Bennett, with Martyn as backing on pipes, to sing me MacCrimmon's Lament during one of their gigs they used to do together down at the Scotch Malt Whisky Society's rooms in Leith, Edinburgh. This was in the early 90's while Martyn was still at Uni studying Music. I always made a point of going to hear them together each year and taking my Gaelic speaking mother with me. When they took a break mum and Margaret would have a blether in Gaelic while I got a chance to talk to Martyn. He was such a gentle soul and so incredibly gifted. Just like his mother! :) Such a lovely memory I will always treasure.

    I was privledged to see Martyn perform in king tuts in glasgow on two occasions. two of the most incredible live performances I have ever seen, his loss is deeply felt by all who loved his music. we share that with his family and friends. As for the two dislikes listed here, you need to grow up you obviously lack something?

  • @johndally7994
    @johndally7994 Před 8 lety +37

    The first tune is called "Cha Till e Tuille." The refrain in translation is:
    No more, no more,
    No more returning,
    In peace nor in war
    Is he returning;
    Till dawns the great Day
    Of Doom and burning,
    MacCrimmon is home
    No more returning.
    The second tune is "The Ewe with the Crooked Horn," a strathspey, followed by "Na Goisidich" and "An Drochaid Chliuteach". The Scottish smallpipes were made by Hamish Moore out of Lignum Vitae and were given to Allan MacDonald by Martyn's mother, Margaret, after Martyn passed away. "The ewe with the crooked horn" is euphemism for an illegal still.

    Wee Martyn was one of the most wonderful musicians I have ever known, and also one of the kindest most gentle of souls. Though I was never too fond of his electronica (my problem - I have never liked computers playing music), his unadulterated playing moved and inspired me profoundly. I will never forget the first time I heard him play, nor the last... A truly great musician, and I don't use those words lightly.

    MacCrimmon's Lament
    Round Cuillin's peak the mist is sailing
    The banshee croons her note of wailing
    But my blue e'en wi' sorrow are streaming
    For him that will never return - MacCrimmon
    No more, no more, no more forever
    In war or peace shall return MacCrimmon
    No more, no more, no more forever
    Shall love or gold bring back MacCrimmon
    The breezes on the braes are mournfully moaning
    The brook in the hollow is plaintively mourning
    But my blue e'en wi' sorrow are streaming
    For him that will never return - MacCrimmon
