I think you are spot on about lead singer Chester Bennington having an unexpected voice for the genre. I know people used to mock that, saying he sounded like he "belonged in a boyband". I think that's a very limited way of thinking, and often having more to do with posturing a kind of "toughness".
Chester had a bright tenor voice with some "boyish" quality to it, yes. He was also able to add distortion to his voice, from slight touches to almost animal sounding screams. That gave him an incredible range in terms of emotion he could convey, and he really used that well.
It also made his voice stand out from lower, heavier instrumentation; giving clarity to the vocals, and making the overall sound feel bigger.
The way the distortion blends with his higher voice also creates a really special sound, like there is more dimension within it.
I can understand some people not liking his voice as a matter of personal taste, but the way he used it great ❤

Chester passed away on July 20 2017 at his house. Chester could sing any song he wanted to. He had the voice of an angel and the scream of a demon.
Here are some songs that Chester sang on stage that you should hear and will like:
White Wedding by Billy Idol (live 2016 with Kings of Chaos) (cover)
Rolling in the Deep by Adele (live ITUNES festival 2011) (cover)
My December by Linkin Park (live Projekt Revolution 2002)
QWERTY by Linkin Park (live Summer Sonic Japan 2006)
Faint by Linkin Park (live Rock AM Ring 2007)
Wish by Nine Inch Nails (live Rock AM Ring 2004) (cover)
From Collision Course: Linkin Park with Jay Z(live from the Roxy theater in Los Angeles CA 2004)
Dirt off your Shoulder/Lying from You
    Papercut/Big Pimpin
    Jigga What/Faint
    Izzo/In the End
Points of Authority/99 Problems/One Step Closer (Points of Authority instrumental only)
Songs Chester recorded but never sang live:
System (Queen of the Damned soundtrack)
Lost (unreleased demo from Meteora that didn't make the album)
Fighting Myself (also an unreleased demo from Meteora)
