I think you are spot on about lead singer Chester Bennington having an unexpected voice for the genre. I know people used to mock that, saying he sounded like he "belonged in a boyband". I think that's a very limited way of thinking, and often having more to do with posturing a kind of "toughness". Chester had a bright tenor voice with some "boyish" quality to it, yes. He was also able to add distortion to his voice, from slight touches to almost animal sounding screams. That gave him an incredible range in terms of emotion he could convey, and he really used that well. It also made his voice stand out from lower, heavier instrumentation; giving clarity to the vocals, and making the overall sound feel bigger. The way the distortion blends with his higher voice also creates a really special sound, like there is more dimension within it. I can understand some people not liking his voice as a matter of personal taste, but the way he used it great ❤
