    I was their that day, Hinault did not finish but when he rode past me I could feel his energy and presence. I was only 19 and it blew me away. Chapeau. For me the fittest guys on the Planet.

    Lemond should have known Boyer had no chance. He should have stayed on the wheels a bit longer and attacked later.

    I was there and remember Saronni disappearing up the hill to victory.

    Let's say more properly and with a bit of knowledge of cycling that Saronni should light a candle to himself x being simply unbeatable on that type of arrival (lowgrade short climb ). Look at his stunning athletic gesture at the hardest point of track, when camera hardly shoots an arrow flying to end line. Boyer had no chance ag Saronni predicted winner by experts before race.

      Saroni knew Boyer and LeMond did not get along. He was waiting for LeMond to jump. Smart racing by Saroni.

    I am stunned at how bad LeMond's tactics were. If he would have been smart and following wheels he very well could have been the world champion. You never chase a teammate down in the final km.

      LeMond was asked after the finish about chasing down his team mate and he responded, “We were in the last 500 metres and Boyer only had about a 20-metre lead, which there was no way he could keep. I didn’t think he could win and I didn’t want him to. He’s just not a friend. He’s never won a professional race and I didn’t think he was the kind of guy who should be World Champion.”
      “I was wearing the U.S. jersey, sure, but there really wasn’t a U.S. team and I definitely wasn’t part of it. I paid for my own trip to England, everything. There was no support from the U.S. federation. The team I was racing for was Renault.”

      Yeah poor form but it likely wouldn't have changed anything based on Saronni's surge ! I always thought this had been a sprint victory by Saronni but not quite !

      Boyer had not a chance to stay in the lead. You can see that he is tired right after that last corner. He should have pushed as Sarroni and Lemond did. So, I think Lemond did the only smart thing to go for the win himself.

    This was a strange finish. Lemond chasing team mate Boyer and riding lead out for Saronni??

      @Scott-ph2yk Před rokem +1

      The Americans agreed before the race that it was "every man for himself" LeMond owed Boyer nothing. Boyer could not have won, he went too far out from the line.
