I was there, in my mid 20's... the band was great, but the rhythm section guys especially left an unmemorable trace. Jimmy Johnson's playing with his five string (first time I heard a b -string bass) sounded so good... even his solos where he used the whole fret board instead of just shredding the highest notes. Me and my bass playing friends stared with our jaws on grass, who's the h**l is his hippie looking guy 😆

I remember this well, still have it on c-cassette. I believe the show was broadcast simultaneously on TV and FM radio, so that you could enjoy stereo sound. Television sound was strictly mono back then. Thank you YLE.
Anyhow, I was just getting into jazz/rock fusion during that time, and remember thinking this music had a little too much of the 'elevator music' element to it, but kept listening because I liked the drummer so much. Then of course I became a Lee Ritenour fan, which I still am.

The section from 3.05 to 3.30 has an intense drive with Rit, Carlos, Jimmy, and Dave locked in like Fort Knox, absolutely killer. 4:17 - thanks to the cameraman for giving us this view a bit longer than just a second. Carlos Vega in the flow or should I write meditation or what is it?
A true master giving his talent to the music and no doubt he loves what he does. 🥰
Jimmy Johnson is still touring with the wonderful band he formed with Steve Gadd and Michael Landau. These guys still bring their audiences to musical heaven. 🙏
Same with Lee Ritenour and his wonderful bands. Larry Williams is another heroe of mine. Had the chance hearing him a couple of times with Al Jarreau. Outstanding keyboarder, saxophonist and flute-player! In Al's late years Larry seemed to focus more and more on soloing with the flute, so awesome! 👍

I love the "wtf" look on Carlo's face at the 14:48 mark. Been there before! Hard to distinguish what you ard hearing and hoping you're right with one. Which he was. But it is unmistakable - That look.
Also his fill after the 1st verse which uses a displaced accent off triplets. They all come in after it but barely. Lee's smile and turn around say it all. Triplet messing. Hard to do that.

Yep! You can see Rit hated that, then bursted to laughter, then was ashamed someone played him out on his own song, turned his back at the audience laughing, composed himself - and waited fearfully for the Larry Williams synth solo (Larry was much more forgiving). :-) What a great band. :-)

Agreed bro. Ya knows these festivals if ya have played some like them the sound guy says ya, sounds good we dont have that much time to get sounds, well get em close and ill mix ya in as ya start your set! Haha, great and yes the middle of the day at some gigantic jazz somewhere overseas etc so tough to make it right, but i guess thats the fun of it in a wacky way its either gonna hit or suck or for these cats its gonna hit just about every time to us, but ya know dang wel that they feel close to us when it comes to perfection and surely the humble insecurities carlos seemed to feel quite a bit not being enough no matter how ya seem on the outside. At the worst part is when your set is done at s fest like this they want your asses off the staage faster than ya got there ...hate that feeling but thats how it works etc. Theres a bridge section in the first tune that reminds me of green earings steely dan sorta. Im a huge porcaro dork so its great seeing carlos play and i hadnt really gotten a chance to check out this lee ritnour era sound, his guitar tone reminds me of janne shaffer sweedish guitar player the porcaro fam played on a whole album of his and itz super fire hot!
