Don't Make this Cruise Mistake

  • We made a big time cruise mistake and it cost us money. It seemed that our day in Cork, Ireland would be uneventful but it did not start well. We did make our way to the Blarney Castle and contemplated kissing the Blarney Stone. We also spend time in Cork city proper in in the town of Kinsale. Here is a recap and lesson learned from day 3 of my Regal Princess British Isles cruise.

      Blarney Stone?
      The Blarney stone powers were reportedly thanks to a witch. She cast a spell on the stone to thank a king who saved her from drowning. Kissing the Blarney stone is said to give “The Gift of Eloquence” or as some simply

    Tony, When we kissed the Blarney stone, the guides explained the reason the stairs were so narrow . It was for defensive purposes. All they had to do was kill the first attacker and the stairs would be blocked until they removed the that person and basically all they had to do was keep killing the fiirst soldier and that wouldn't require that many people to defend the stairs.

    We did the British Isles cruise in 2014 on the Ruby Princess. For Cobh, we were lucky enough that our tour bus filled up quickly and we were the first to leave, directly to Blarney Castle. It was pouring rain when we got there, so my wife passed on the Blarney Stone kissing. Being of Irish descent, I had no choice but to do it. There we no line up at all at the castle so it was straight up to the top! So now imagine climbing those stone stairs when they're soaking wet. Got to the top, there was one couple ahead of me.I kissed the stone, they took the obligatory (and very expensive) picture and down I went. I met my wife at the Blarney Woolen Mill before she had spent the family fortune - although I was sorely tempted to buy a tweed jacket.

    I keep forgetting but being reminded almost daily I'm in my senior years. I am too claustrophobic to handle those stairs. Thank you for SHOWING me I couldn't do it.
    I'm rather stubborn and if I'm told I can't do something I'll want to do it even more.
    It looked like everyone had a great time. I really enjoy watching real videos of travel. Television shows are just too edited and doesn't really give the real feeling of the experience. Keep the excursion videos coming along with the cruise news. 😀

      It was not the operators fault! It was clearly stated that the tour bus would leave 30 minutes after the ship docks! Tour companies are fully aware when a ship arrives earlier & Tony said they could have made it easily had they not wasted time instead! Also all the others that were booked on made it! I always use trusted third party companies & have never had a problem when following instructions!

    • @AndreasAntics
      @AndreasAntics Před rokem +2

      @@penelopemicklethwaite8161 he also said the ship docked around 8, but they said it docked at 7:50. I guess that’s up to interpretation. There was no definitive time they were supposed to be there, and there was plenty of wiggle room to wait a couple of minutes for a group. They left at 8:20 when they would have typically left at 9:30 if the ship had come at the posted dock time. That’s an hour and ten minutes of wiggle room. I’ve been on plenty of tours that waited a few minutes for people.

    Also in Dublin you guys should of went to the tour of Guinness Brewery. That was quite interesting and at the end they had free drafts of Guinness at the top level in their Skybar with views of Dublin all around. You could chill and drink as much as you liked. I think a more fun activity then the distillery. Just my opinion.

    I’m grateful to you for doing this and recording it. I now know that I WILL NOT EVER go kiss the Blarney Stone!
    I am not generally claustrophobic but I think I would have had a panic attack on the last 10 minutes or so of that climb!

    "I'm not saying there's a little tension in the air but we have to make out with a rock first" needs to be quoted and put on a shirt! The gift of gab is good for a streamer.

    Thank you for sharing, including your mistake. It does help us to know what to expect in Cork and how to really pay attention to everything. Have a great time!
