  • Coral Princess is a Coral Class Cruise ship that entered service with Princess Cruises in early 2003. One of two Coral Class ships - the other being Island Princess - Coral Princess was designed as a new generation Princess cruise ship that is small enough to transit the original locks of the Panama Canal.
With the retirement of the Sun Class cruise ships in 2021, Coral Princess is now the baby of the Princess Cruises fleet, with a tonnage of just over 91,000 tons, making her slightly smaller than Island Princess.
I recently cruised aboard Coral Princess as a guest of Princess Cruises. This trip gave me a great opportunity to learn about the ship and its facilities, and share this with you. So, lets go aboard Coral Princess and see why this ship remains a firm favourite with many repeat guests twenty years after her launch.

Having been on many river and ocean cruises, there’s probably going to be one cruise that didn’t cut the mustard. For us, that awful voyage was on the Coral Princess 5 years ago sailing from Vancouver to Whittier. The ship itself was fine as was the itinerary and the incredible scenery, but it was the poor customer service culture and poor work ethic by many customer service staff, particularly the longer serving staff who preferred to stand back, not lift a hand, and “supervise” the junior newbie staff who had to do everything. The newbies tried their best and were very good, but it was the more experienced customer service staff who seemed to be believe that they were managers and therefore exempt from carrying out any customer service . The Coral Princess had an underlying feeling of being an unhappy ship.
On a land tour immediately before embarking the Coral, the tour director outlined how cruise ships develop a good or not so good “crew culture”. It didn’t take long on the Coral to realise what the tour director was referring to - I suspect it was a subtle forewarning that things on the Coral Princess were not going to be all that great.
I cringed when I learnt that the Coral Princess was coming to Australia. But due to the pause in operations for the cruise industry during the pandemic, hopefully all the Coral’s pre-pandemic customer service crew have long gone and the customer service crew now on the Coral are all new to the ship and have developed a positive and customer focussed “crew culture”. I really hope that is the case.

I'm happy to report, after coming off the ship earlier this week, that the ship and staff were wonderful. The staff worked so hard, it was immaculate. Despite best efforts from all COVID spread quickly. I'll wait to go on another cruise, but only because of the current high infection rate.

We travelled on Coral last July '22 when Australia finally opened up, after covid. It was great to be back on after the 2 year hiatus. Staff were wonderful as they'd been eager to get back to work. The ship was fine and the itinerary we'd done many times just trying different shore tours to keep it interesting.
The virus protocols were strict at that time but didn't hinder our enjoyment.
We were on the Majestic in March '23 for 28 days and the ship was too big for me. We tended to stay where the international Cafe and lotus spa were since it was difficult to get to the opposite end of the ship constantly. Even dining room breakfast was given up due to its location. Unfortunately for such a large ship our mini suite was on the 8th floor directly above the theatre. The noise luckily stopped around 11pm.
We're again on the Coral for another 28 days in October so am really excited to be back on the smallest ship of the Princess fleet. We were great fans of their sun ships like the Dawn and Sun, including the final voyage in Australia of the original Love Boat the Pacific Princess. So as you can see, for us the now seen as smaller ships have captured our hearts more so than the latest mega ships.
We're on the Royal in '24 and I fear it'll be the same story as the Majestic, a too big, floating town, unable to get into certain ports due to its size.

What I really like is that the ship and others of that size look really cool and like proper ships from the outside, too. Lots of the really large ships nowadays just look like big fat floating blocks with water slides and gokart race tracks all over the top decks (Breakaway & -Plus classes, Excellence class and so on).

Been both Coral and Island, Coral through the Panama Canal. A wonderful trip. Did you mention the Caribe deck at 5:24? The Island Princess no longer has the Universe lounge as that area has been converted to cabins adding 200 passengers but also means there in no walking around the ship on deck 7 any more (converted in 2017?). The Promenade deck is one of the things I like about the older Princess ships. The newer ships do not have a walk around deck.

Great ship with great venues such as Explorers Lounge, Universe Lounge and Wheelhouse Bar, our favourite which is great for dancing and relaxing. The staff on this ship were very happy and provided great service perhaps because it is a smaller ship. The food in the buffet was very good. Even though older, Coral Princess is one of our favourite Princess ships.

I have been aboard Coral Princess. Don't like "The International Cafe". It is a very small Cafe, next to the Casino.
