Two Orca Ecotypes are Actually Separate Species
Vložit

- Orcas are currently classified as a singular, global species, which are further divided into roughly a dozen recognized Ecotypes, which themselves contain certain subgroups within each ecotype.
A new paper looked at the differences between two ecotypes in the North Pacific; the Transient and Resident ecotypes, and determined that both should be reclassified as their own distinct species of killer whale. Lets talk about it

What about Type Ds though? They're the most unusual looking of them all with small eye patches, rounded heads and curved dorsal fins. They look like a very likely candidate for a separate species too.

Transients and residents are a different species? I guess that explains the diet and size differences.
That's fantastic news!
Right after this video was released a second study by a different group of scientists was published with more confirmation
nice energy, go on
Thanks for the great video 💙

Let us hope that this realisation will actually be recognised.
lets goooo! i am excited. i say every justified attempt to seperate species on our planet is helping towards a deeper understanding of our wild counterparts. we might even as a whole truly come to the conclusion, that we are in fact just one of many astonishing species on this planet and every species deserves there spot in the current worldorder and we cannot take it away, because they are equally as important and diverse as our own.
this could then lead to a change from anthropocentrism to ecocentrism. i know i know. call me a dreamer if you want.
Nice work dude! Go on! Abo button is hit ;)

Sounds lie their sub species, not separate species...
Tell that to the scientists
@@Paleopedia218 No need. I have No doubt about the actual conclusion of scientists... 😂
Since I am one...
@@davidbarkin8269they are different species taking into account jaw and teeth structure as well as flippers size and shape . In transient flippers are shaped in a way that indicates they chase their prey , whereas the resident orcas on the other hand, have much shorter ones. They are indeed different species
@@evagomes1590 No offense, but we can agree to disagree. The Center for species evaluation has not yet made a decision. I will abide by THEIR decision

Are dogs, wolves, and foxes the same species?
If they are, please apologize to trees for wasting the oxygen they create.
This may be the dumbest thing I have seen on the Internet.
What are you even trying to say?
Read my post.
@rogerneely5763 wow. It’s almost like I did, and didn’t understand what you were trying to say, because it made no sense to the context of the video’s topic, which is why I asked for clarification
Are dogs the same species of wolves?
Are Asians the same species of Caucasians?
If so, .... To say an Orca is a different "species" because it has a different mark on it's back
Or because it eats differently as a predator
Or because it is taller (sorry) longer than another Orca
Is almost like telling Aboriginesr tribes in Australia are not human because they are shorter than the average American.
Or are you actually implying that?
@rogerneely5763 so did you completely miss the “the two ecotypes have been genetically separated for 300,000 years, and show no evidence of interbreeding in that time” section of the video?
its a wonder we dont do this with humans
A biologist from Mars wouldn't have much trouble with that idea. But you know how it is.
You can! It's easy to apply this same inquiry process to humans with available evidence. When you do, you find one species characterized by high phenotypic diversity and behavioral plasticity (thanks to recent and rapid global dispersal and population expansion), with relatively low genetic diversity and zero reproductive barriers. If you go to the nearest park and see a few gray squirrels hanging out, you're looking at more genetic diversity between those few rodents of the same species than you can find in the entire global population of Homo sapiens. If you're looking to justify cultural constructs of race, genomics are not a good place for you to find support.
@@orcrist3 excellent point, what about using violent or criminal inclination, the lack of two patent households, the propensity to abuse narcotics, the abundance of social welfare usage, or even, the necessity to offer lower standards for admission as the starting point to determine sub-divisions in our species.
