Royalty restored, tale of the Saurombe chieftaincy

  • IN 1946, the Bulgarian monarchy was abolished, marking the death of a centuries long royal tradition.
    The then-reigning Czar, Simeon II, was forced into exile, only to return to Bulgaria decades later, serving as its Prime Minister between 2001 and 2005. Despite this comeback, the monarchy remains dissolved to this day - 78 years down the line. In stark contrast, but during the same year, the Rhodesia colonial regime, abolished the Saurombe chieftaincy in Chimanimani District in 1945, relegating it to a mere headman under the Muusha chieftaincy.
    However, unlike Bulgaria’s monarchy, the Saurombe chieftaincy has now been resuscitated after a 79-year hiatus - marking a historic moment for the dynasty and the region.
