  • For most of us, outer order contributes to inner calm.
    outerorderinnercalmbook.com/
In the context of a happy life, a messy desk or crowded coat closet is a trivial problem-yet Gretchen Rubin has found that getting more control of our stuff makes us feel more in control of our lives. By getting rid of things we don't use, don't need, or don't love, as well as things that don't work, don't fit, or don't suit, we free our minds (and our shelves) for what we truly value.
The fact is, when we tailor our approach to suit our own particular challenges and habits, we’re far more likely to be able to create the order that will make our lives happier, healthier, more productive, and more creative.

I just finished your book. It was LOVELY and I recommend it strongly, not only to people wanting to declutter and feel content, but also to those that seek harmony with spouse. Yesterday, I was horrible and felt horrible towards my SO and I applied one of your techniques and it worked! I felt better and I became instantly enough calm and kind to apologise and communicate. Thanks!

Know thyself and be true to it is strangely two very hard things to do? Interesting video. Curious about the book.

I'm new to the Happiness Project and wanted to congratulate you for your amazing videos and website!! Does your Outer Order Inner Calm book address how to create to-do lists and stick to them? I have a lot to do, both for the house and the office, and often struggle to get things done. I'm easily discouraged and give up when the going gets tough.

Here's one from the Fifth Discipline by Peter Senge on tension. Moving from a current state to a new state of being inevitably invites tension. For example, a change of job or habit of running in the evening to an early morning run. The tension felt tends to be emotional. That's emotional energy. Now translating that emotional tension to creative tension is a discipline. The discipline of following a new routine in stages and transiting into the new job or habit over a period of time. For me, instantaneous transition is not sustainable. It's a quick response that stemmed from a culture of instant gratification. In short, tapping emotional energy is a discipline. Tapping it creatively is a personal mastery that can be trained.
