The squence that starts at 03:30 up to 04:10 is just amazing. I dont know anything about druming but its just pleasing to watch him do that and how it fits perfectly with the music

Kai is like a batman here: the video quality doesn't allow you to see all the moves but you know he must have hit a symbal when you see it moving. There are sections where many symbals start moving in rapid succession without the video keeping up.

The definition of insanity on drums. Probably one of the worlds best time keepers. Power + Speed = Kai. If ur looking for grace and fluidity then look to Gavin Harrison. Neil Peart will always be my fav but much admiration for Gavin and Todd Sucherman. Lots of really great unknown drummers out there.

@tormen I personally don't think they should've been replaced by more skillful artists. There's no need. They could be replaced by less skillful ones. But there aren't any to be found.
Ulrich is a god of Rythem and writing. A human metronome in his prime.
So easy to get distracted by all the other stuff going on in this song and not realize how good of a drummer Kai is.

Saw them as support for COB in 2006. They hammered Alexi and co. off the stage. I dont mean COb were bad, but Wintersun was just too fucking mighty.
COB was always absolute dogshit live.
Well.....Alexi was at least....and considering he was lead guitar AND vocals.....kinda important
Now that he's the permanent Nightwish drummer, I hope Tuomas will take the advantage of his skills.
I just red an article in Inferno, a Finnish music magazine, Nightwish invited them to listen to their upcoming album in advance to give a little teaser review, they wrote that Kai Hahto has been "unleashed" and that he will definitely play more like he himself would rather than follow Jukka's style.

Wintersun Jari is incredible, but Kai Hahto is pure Genius on drums...
I saw a play through he did. I think he has one of those air-pressure hi hat pedals that can be set right next to the double pedal. I think he's hitting the hi hat pedal with his heel and the double pedal with his toe

Nope. Jai gave him the recorded riffs. Kai then had to write them out, and work out the time signatures prior to coming up with the drum riffs go go underneath.
@@andyventures6574 I think you misunderstood my comment, I was just complementing Kai's drum writing skills, I have been fortunate enough to have a few hours drumming lesson with Kai and ask him about the process and there is alot of back and forth between Jari and Kai with Kai tracking drum parts and sending them to Jari and Jari then deciding what he likes and doesn't and then and giving feedback for changes etc until hes happy with the drumming, but I was just merely using the word "tailored" as a complement

Kai Hahto, Mario Duplantier, Thomas Haake, Danny Carey, Baard Kolstadt, Martin Axenrot, Aric Improta, Matt Gartska, Steven Harris, the one from MGLA (dont know the name)and probably many more... But I can't process how crazy creative (and ofc good) these guys are on drums. I mean technical stuff is one thing, normally everybody gets there with practice, but these ideas and the execution of them are just completely crazy with this guys. Feel free to name more (Creative metal drummers, not super fast drummers)

they're called winglocks. Usually a nut called wingnut nut this is much more secure and doesn't loosen like wingnuts
I really miss Kai playing with Wintersun. Just saw them in Helsinki, and as a drummer I know that the sound is just not the same :(

+monttumopo I'm pretty sure he's been using the Pearl Demon Drives exclusively for a while. I've seen other videos of him using those.

He's using Axis Longboards. They're usually what he uses with Wintersun. With Nightwish, he was using the Demon Drive(or the Eliminator, I forget)
