Garbage Trucks: Cardella Waste

  • Cardella Waste seems to be one of the bigger NYC demolition waste haulers, their website boasts an impressive looking list of high profile construction projects they've hauled for. Seeing as I lucked out and managed to catch both one of their rear loaders and roll offs in action, I decided another "Garbage Trucks" series video was in order.
Rear load packers have a long pedigree of demolition waste duty in New York. Steel 1/2 yard containers are filled with waste inside the building then brought out to the street to be dumped into what is almost always either a LM-400 or a 2R series packer, like the 2R-II featured here. There's no lack of variety in the various methods employed by different carting outfits to dump 1/2yd cans into the hopper. The Lodal derived A-frame setup is very popular and most efficient. Countless variations of packer chains and winches, with or without slide in trunnion bars, are also used. Walk ups get handled with plain old Rubbermaid manual bins lugged up and down the stairs. I didn't see anyone else using cloth laundry-type carts like the ones here.
The bigger jobs involve cordoning off a section of street for a roll off dumpster like the one at 8:00. Dumpsters can be filled with chutes from the upper floors, or in this case a skid steer at ground level. A late model Western Star/American Roll-Off makes quick work of 20 yards of brick.
Thanks to the crews, filmed July 29, 2013.

Years ago I filmed a really cool Autocar New Way from them. Real old Autocar. Definitely a unique truck. Always wonder where that footage went

The first one is a leach rear loader I think

Whenever I've seen these hard core rear loaders with the word "demolition" featured on the side of the body, I always associated them with hoppers full of rubble and steel =] Seeing what this Leach was being fed with was very different to my thoughts, was really just containers full of light compactable material; no challenge for this beast whatsoever. Although it was very interesting watching these containers emptied via the A-frame on what's usually the kick bar, which was done much smoother than another truck I just watched. Also saw them utilise the winch a couple of times where he completely turned the containers upside down and impressively used the packer blade and hopper edge to lower it back around the right way. You can see it's a very dusty job but, can't blame them for wearing those face marks - who knows what you could be breathing in. Roll-off at the end was awesome to watch, definitely a heavier duty job with all those bricks. I like how the operator revved only steadily and loaded the container smoothly. Grill flapping around on the front looked kinda shit though :D Cool short bursts of rev right at the end too, sounded pretty neat.

Thanks! I was referring to this video. Not sure when the next one will be posted. I'm not all that great at planning ahead lol.

Demolition trucks rock. I love watching those small containers get dumped by some of the oldest trucks that roam the US. And the small companies that operate these trucks brings me back to the 70s and 80s when NYC was filled with those mafia run haulers lol I seen a Demolition Company on Google Maps that has an old Autocar ACL in their fleet, mint condition. Which brings me to my next point about how every single Demolition Company has some of the sharpest looking trucks out there. Despite being old, the trucks look like they were just bought yesterday. So cool. So none of the mega-haulers work demolition I'm guessing? The MR that appeared at 8:30 looked awesome with the black rims. Any idea what company it was from? The tipper on the truck was so entertaining. There's no other way for me to describe it other than cool lol The RL was on a WG I'm assuming? Pro driver in the roll off. I really hope you have more demolition videos! They are so fun to watch! Great work George!!

Agreed. The show truck culture is much more prevalent in the Northeast than elsewhere, especially when it comes to waste haulers. Personally I'm not a fan of all the chrome and funny looking aftermarket bits, however it's amazing to be able to talk to a driver who is as excited about their truck as you are. The demolition companies are all local, they don't just do the hauling but the actual demo work as well, so you won't ever see this sort of equipment plastered with Happy Facts. Can't make out the name on the MR. Can't remember the chassis on the Cardella RL either. The 2R-IIs on their website are all either ACLs or Western Stars. As for the roll off driver, his name on the cab door is the telltale mark of a pro lol. Very happy to hear that you get as excited about this equipment as I do, there's plenty more to come.

Just out of curiosity, how do you find garbage trucks, either DSNY or private haulers, in NYC? It seems like such a big city with too many collection days and times of the day to keep track of. I will actually be traveling to NYC this summer and I was wondering if you have any tips or tricks on finding a truck, preferably in Manhattan without spending all day trying to look for one. Thanks for your help!!

Literally the easiest filming ever. Just take a walk in any Manhattan neighborhood. DSNY in the morning, demolition haulers throughout the day, private commercial haulers starting in the evening all the way through the next morning. There are garbage trucks everywhere you look, it's paradise.

Great video! Plenty of trash in NYC. Why is the packer so slow on this truck?

Leaches are known for their slow packers, those massive cylinders are thirsty for oil. Newer ones are faster.
