I'm part of the demographic, 64 YO. In case you're wondering why someone my age watches your show - you provide Christ, you love your husband and children, you are respectful to your Nanny and parents, honesty and humility are so important to you, I could go on! You provide content that used to be on TV shows in the 1950-60s era, clean and enjoyable. ❤

My mother had six kids and no dishes on her counters. We cleared the table when supper was over. One person washed dishes, cleaned stove, counters, and table. 2 of us dried the dishes and put them in the cabinet where they belonged. Nothing was left in the sink or on the counter. Where was Mom? Eating bonbons and watching TV? NO. She was in the basement doing laundry and ironing. Remember, there were 6 kids and 2 parents to keep up after. She was a great mentor. ❤❤❤❤❤❤

One suggestion is each family member has one cup/glass. Each responsible to clean that cup when the drink us finish through the day. Never just place it in the sink for you to clean.
As for the rest if the dishes clean as you go. Never just place in the sink for later.
Dishes always done before going to bed at the latest.
Also, have the kids help. They are certainly old enough to dry the dishes as you wash. Giving you one on one time with each of them.

I personally have always cleaned up as I cooked. Before I served the meal I washed the pots and pans and put them away. When the meal was completed, everyone put their dishes, glasses and silverware on the counter and ready to be washed. Once they were washed they were dried and put away. The kids wiped off the dinner table and all was completed. I'm 72 years old an empty nester and I still have the same routine for myself and when my family or friends join me for dinner. Watching you brings me so much joy. I see the struggles you have gone thru, you've come a long way. What impresses me the most is your commitment to God and family and always include your family in all decisions. Your and your loveved ones are so dear to my heart.❤

A great family vlog😊I would have the kids do dishes 1 doing glasses and mugs another doing the dishes and another doing silverware and cooking utensils make it a star sticker award on a posterboard if they dont do their part they don't get a sticker whoever has the most stickers and they can do the dishes throughout the day getting a sticker whoever has the most at the end of the week gets to pick the meal for dinner or a special dessert it works and it makes it fun for them I personally still would do the pots and pans.I think personally you should reward yourself with fresh flowers weekly they dont have to be expensive you can get them at the grocery stores or have the kids pick them for you they make you feel good and they give your house a warm brightness treat yourself your at home most the time doing for everyone your a good mother and wife you and Shane have a beautiful family who loves our Lord Jesus Christ. I'm 59 and we have never had a dishwasher. Even when I designed and we remodeled our kitchen we didn't put one in. When our kids were younger I cleaned up what could be done while meals were prepped. Your kids are old enough to have dish clean up be a chore for them. Two pair up and do breakfast or lunch dishes, two pair up and help you or Shane with supper dishes. Trade off each week. This is the fastest way to teach everyone to rinse their dishes. They will appreciate these skills when they get out on their own.
I love that God is the center of everything you do. 💕 You are a true inspiration to all ages. 💚

That’s right. We kids did the dishes after dinner every night. We even had a stool to stand on because we started young. We also had to clean house every Saturday morning before we could go play. The boys helped with yard work, garage sweep out and washing cars and my sister and I cleaned indoors. It was just expected and there was no exception. This disciplined routine carried into my adulthood and my sons did the same. They are now married and are very disciplined and work as a team with their families to keep clean and organized homes. Getting your kids involved will help them in the long run.

Since I was in grade 4 my parents taught me to wash dishes. My sister and I would have it as a chore, one washing one drying, every day, after dinner. Mom did any other dishes during the day. ALL of your kids are well old enough that you shouldn’t be washing dishes anymore girl! It’s time to give them the gift of learning to care for a home themselves one day, and the pride that comes from contributing directly to the family, daily.

I have never had a dishwasher. I am a 68 year old widow, but have always hated doing dishes until I found God. Since that time I can't stand my dished or laundry not being done. You on the other hand my dear have 4 children who you are with 24/7. God gave you those beautiful precious gifts. That is the first and foremost main thing you need to take care of. You are not and never have been lazy. Don't change how you do things. Include you kids in all you do and get them involved. They are only young once. You always get it done. You are great just the way you are.

When I was growing up, every time momma went into the kitchen to prepare any food, she stared with a sink of fresh hot dishwater. As she cooked, she washed dishes. While dinner cooked, she got everything cleaned up. After dinner, we all put our plates in the new sink of dish water. Dishes never seemed like a chore to her. When we first got married, my husband and I didn’t have a dishwasher. By the time we had our first baby we had a tiny “spacemaker” dishwasher. We used that 13 years!

I raised 6 children and never had a dishwasher. As missionaries in the Amazon, we did not even have running water for a few years. By age 6 my children were very involved with kitchen clean up. I paired an older child with a younger one. I washed dishes all day as I went along. Certain children knew to dry and put away any dishes as I washed. We had great conversations as we worked together. Due to living in the jungle, we had to clean as we went or “critters” would be all over us. Never go to bed with dirty dishes. Never go between a meal without clean up immediately after. And that includes drying and putting away. Leaving them on the counter to drain, seemed to invite people to leave out dirty dishes as well. Children can be taught to clean up any dish they use right away. I hope that is helpful.❤

  • @lindamcdermott9980
    @lindamcdermott9980 Před 3 měsíci +17

You are the best!….. I’m in your 77 yr old demographic, I raised 4 children, and the dishes were always done. (No dishwasher)….. At night when everything was finished, I announced the kitchen was closed! First of all, I washed the food prep dishes as I went along. I never stood and waited for anything, not even the toaster to pop up. Every idle minute a dish or utensil got washed. The kids as they got older 10 - 12, their job was one to wash the other to dry and put away, while I cleaned up the table and put leftovers away. This is not child labor or child abuse, it is teaching them life skills. When they got older, they would make an after school snack before I got home from work. They made a (sq pan), chocolate cake, ate it, did the dishes and cleaned up before I got home. I did not find out about this antic for months until I noticed Hershey Cocoa appeared on the grocery shopping list way too often……. And they never saved me a piece!
Develop a routine, nothing happens until the dishes are done, (no tv, screen time, outside or disappearing into the bathroom). If they are 10, they should “practice life skills” for 10 minutes, as they get older increase the time accordingly as well as their responsibilities. You are such a great mom, and creative and making your home beautiful, as well as homeschooling. You can add other life skills once a week to the curriculum. (Ideas might include 10 minutes folding laundry, sweeping the floor, sorting laundry or putting a load in with supervision. You often talked about not knowing a lot about homemaking growing up, now is the time to introduce it to your kids. When they grow up it will be second nature. Boys especially need these skills, so many grew up in the past thinking it was woman’s work. Not fair to women, not fair in general! That theory is in the past. I was a Home Ec teacher, mom, & single breadwinner. It can be done. Start off small, set the timer, don’t listen to any complaints, they will get over it and be better human beings because of it. Sometimes you may feel it is easier to do it yourself instead of supervising, but the goal is to teach them, anything new has an adjustment period. You will have one too. Tough it out. It’s worth it. ❤
Some people, like me want to share what works. (Two of my children had developmental issues). I Figure if a day care can stay clean and organized, so can I. I developed a system. About 20 minutes before bed or bath, I would tell them they could play for ten more minutes, then they had to put their stuff away, or straighten up from whatever they were doing. Set the timer for 10 minutes, a loud one so they can hear it. Be prepared to be guilt tripped with the “oh, ma’s!” The timer is the bad guy, not you. Then set the timer again for clean up. You may need to supervise the clean up at first, but eventually they will be able to do it on their own.
This works. I’m sure you will get lots of advice, but this works, and makes them into better human beings.

When beginning to cook: run sink full of warm soapy water. Drop pan in sink as you cook and finish emptying food in serving bowl. After dinner rinse pan with very little scrubbing since food didn't dry and has soaked in sink full of watter. Empty and refill with clean soapy to wash dinner plates.

On that note, I have lived 30 years without a dishwasher and have a family of of 5. I don't miss a dishwasher at all. I learned when the kids were little, the ease of washing them as I used them. As the kids got into middle school, if they used it...they washed it. It taught them basic household responsibilities. Now that they are grown adults, they still come back and thank their father and I for teaching them life skills. Thank you for reminding us that it's okay not to be perfect. We are all perfect in God's eyes..

My grandmother never had a dishwasher but my parents did. I have always had a dishwasher. For me it's one of those chores that you know in your mind it needs to be done before bedtime so most day I just do it. It becomes a habit and not such a chore. Also, regarding your washer and dryer, mine don't match and I'm perfectly fine with that. They perform the function I need them to so they don't need to match unless that is just a thing you prefer. I guess my goals these days are more towards organization which makes me feel I am accomplishing things. It's funny how the mind works on certain things. God bless all of you and please keep doing what you are doing. We love it.

If laundry didnt get done on their assigned day, they had no clean clothes for a week. That usually only happened once lol. Same day they had laundry duty they also had dish duty...all day long. We never had a dishwasher. I now live alone and just wash what I use when I use it. Laundry is another whole issue cuz I tend to put that off until tomorrow :). Growing up, we did dishes after every meal. Most families I knew had children do the dishes. Chores were thought to build character. It was also a way to honor the one who cooked the meal. Someone cooked, another set the table, others cleared the table and washed dishes, still others dried and put away.

I am a 29 year old stay at home homeschool mama with 6 kiddos.
I felt like I was always drowning in chores and never able to keep up. For a long while we lived without a dishwasher. The solution I have found to keep my sanity is delegating specific areas to each of the 4 of my older children (ages 10 and 8) and we just make it a team effort. Now the bulk of the mess including dishes is finished in a quick 10-15 min. It’s helped so much!

Hi, single momma who works 40+ hours a week outside the home and has her kiddos every other day... my housework gets away from me at least once a week. I try to do at least one load of laundry as soon as I have enough clothes to do so and a sinkful of dishes every day (keyword is try). If the mountain is starting to creep back in (usually from working later or there were other things that needed to be done) I put one of your videos on and just start working through it. It could be like tonight where it's almost 10 and I'm doing dishes. I've had nights where I couldn't sleep and it's midnight- you'll find me watching you and folding laundry. I have found in this season of life I need to give myself grace and do what I can with what energy I have left when I get home.

I always start a sink of hot soapy water and wash each utensil, each pot or pan or bowl while I’m cooking, as I finish using it. I even taught my husband to do that, since he does most of the cooking (he’s retired now and I still work). It was a game changer for us. We seldom ever have any dishes to even put in the dishwasher!
We love your videos and look forward to watching every week. If you go to many days between videos, my husband begins to worry about you all and prays extra for you that nothing is wrong! You’ve touched many lives with sharing your home and heart…God bless you and your family!

Sweet Merina, I'm almost 67 years old, raised 5 children and sometimes more (they didn't belong to me)...in a 24 x 44 double wide...I had to stay on top of it, especially with my dishes. My Mama always taught me to wash my dishes as I cooked. It became a habit.
She never owned a dishwasher, never wanted one, I've never wanted one either. The reason is, if I wash my dishes as I cook, get up from the table and wash what we ate out of as soon as we finish, it's just done. I have never had the need for one. I promise, if you ever get in the habit, you won't regret it. That's the best advise I have.
I do the same with my bed, after I make my coffee in the morning, I make my bed. It's done in 2 minutes. I've always washed 1 load of laundry every day except Sunday, that's my day off, and I spend time with God, and resting with him. There was always a load or two to be washed, but it never got away from me.
My house wasn't always completely spotless, but I always taught my children to pick up after themselves. I did the big cleaning, but the big cleaning is easier, if everyone picks up after themselves.
I know that's more advise than you asked for, but I worked full time, without everyone's help, I couldn't have done it. You work hard, there's no shame in asking for help. It's good for you, and everyone else in the house.
As a grown woman well past the child rearing age, I'm Thankful Mama taught me these things.
    Love you and your family.

It was my duty to do all my chores as a Good wife and Mother. That's the advice zi could tell you. Believe me there were many, many times I didn't want to do the dishes but I did. Cleaning up each room in our home was what I loved to do instead of doing dishes. So I thank GOD that I have a dishwasher now. GOD BLESS YOU and your Family. Adrienne from Pa.

Since you wash your dishes the way I do now, which is wash them without making dish water, I just wash as I go. While cooking, anything I mix in, measure with or the cutting board I wash it out right away. Then when I put leftovers away or after I eat, I go ahead and wash everything as I empty it. Then I wipe down the sink, stove and counters. I'm disabled and live in a chair so it makes things much easier for me so I can enjoy my coffee in a clean kitchen every morning.
Merina I love you so much girl. You remind me so much of myself when I was younger. I've always been heavy. My lightest as an adult was 245lbs. I was 300lbs when I graduated high school and that's been my typical weight since then. Don't forget about taking care of yourself too. You deserve it and if you don't do it, you'll regret it when you're my age. I'm 55 now and can't even walk anymore because my knees and back are worn out. I didn't stop and take care of me when I was raising my daughters. I really wish I had now.

I think you are my twin who's 25 years or so younger (I'm 55). You remind me so much of me. I have a wonderful husband who loved me through every size. And we have added on to our little unfinished Jim Walter house in Alabama 3 times and redone it so many times I cannot count! I love love love your spirit and watching you with your family and doing projects. Keep up the great work and keep putting Jesus first. You are beautiful inside and out!
Oh yes and your questions about dishes... when all ten were at home I did not have a dishwasher. Just got one last year. I had ups and downs with the piles of dishes. During the times I was on top of it I washed pots and pans as I was done cooking with them and then did the plates and things as soon as everyone was done. I could do it for weeks on end, but all it took was one sick kid or or one (anything to knock the routine off) thing and I had piles which was depressing and snowballed. And then I'd get back in my routine. All that to say, washing as I finished with the big stuff is the only thing that really helped and then it did not seem so daunting

I always taught my kids that the first step to cooking anything is to fill the sink with hot soapy water. Wash everything as you go so that at mealtime you only have the pots, pans, or dishes the food is in. Then after the meal, everyone helps until the kitchen is cleaned. Another help was that each child had a certain cup or glass that they used for the whole day. They could rinse them out to reuse throughout the day. For breakfast and lunch dishes, each child can wash, rinse, dry, and put away his own plate, bowl, etc. Tomorrow Merina will ALWAYS thank you for leaving your kitchen clean the night before. Put on some dance music and get it done with the whole family! Love you, girl!!!

Yay, so happy to have a video, you always cheer me up. My mom had 4 kids and from the time we were around 10-12 years old each of us had a dish night( before and after she got a dishwasher). Our homework had to be done and we could play before dinner but we could not go to bed unless the kitchen was clean. I'm so thankful for that now. She developed good habits in me. I always clean as I go when cooking or baking, as soon as I dirty a pan I soak it so it takes 2 minutes to clean up after dinner. Btw, even my brother had a dish night. So happy to see you. Your dishwasher may not work, but it can still be working as a dish drainer so the dishes aren't sitting on your countertop drying. It frees up the countertops and makes your space visually more organized. I'm 71 and raised 4 kids and cooked big meals every night, so I washed my dishes as I cooked and always have a sink (or dishpan) full of hot soapy water. I even do that when I cook at church functions. When dinner was served, the only dishes were what was on the table. And the kids each took turns helping me with the dishes (and they all cleared the table by putting their own dishes in the sink). I also did 25 loads of laundry a week, and yes, normal loads, not big loads. That meant when they were done drying, the folding (right from the dryer) went way more quickly. The kids each had a square laundry basket and they had to put their own clothes away immediately. Once my girls started their periods, they got to do their own laundry. (Don't ask me why I started that! 😵‍💫)

Including coffee cups. A container of soapy water to immediately put utensils in when you are done with meal...cleaning up cooking etc. There are also dish strainers over the sink that would make drying time quicker and easier to wash ad you go. Good luck!❤

I have a dishwasher, but I don't like using it.
Whenever I am cooking, the first thing I do is fill the sink with hot water and soap and clean the dishes as I go.
The messier pans or pots were filled with water and set by the sink to start the cleaning process, but they were not allowed to keep soaking.
They were scrubbed at the end of cooking.
This way, when the meal was over, all I have to contend with, are the plates/bowls and silverware and cups.
Using our "down time" as something was cooking/baking, to clean our cooking area was something that we learned in our home economics classes.
I don't think that class is taught in schools anymore.

I’ve never had a dishwasher and did childcare in my home, with My 3 kids as well. The only way I could keep up with the dishes was to clean up as I cooked & always do the dishes after each meal . That helped me to not get overwhelmed by the piles of dishes because I cooked a lot. And used paper plates and paper bowls for eating. All my kids are grown now we have 6 beautiful grandkids & I still follow this dish washing habit…if you do a routine enough it becomes a habit ❤️

Wash dishes as you go . Clean as you go. Works with kiddos too. They learn to do everything you do. Gives them the same sense of accomplishment. ❤

We always wash the dishes right after dinner. We do it as a family. One person washes, one rinses, one dries and the other puts them away. When everyone chips in it makes a WORLD of a difference.
