In this demo we will cover 3 different ways to draw from a photo. Freehand vs Guides vs Tracing and the benefits of each one. Understanding the limitations of a photograph and just how inaccurate they can be. Determine how much water to use with the paint to achieve the effect and end result you want. Using the Lock Transparency on a wet layer to protect an area within a Selected area.
Plenty of real time painting, please sit back and watch the entire demo. It is important!

Very interesting video as always Tom. I particularly like to watch your technique with watercolours, as I often find I build up quite saturated colours too quickly. More lower opacity layers would help, I think.
Hi @joycourtney, I think you are right (lower opacity layers). With digital there are so many options to control the final piece. Do you work with traditional watercolors very much? Since they dry much lighter than the original wash that takes a little practice to understand how much it will change once the water dries out. That's one great feature about digital, the color you put down is the color/intensity that remains. I have several traditional detailed illustration demos planed. I am looking forward to doing them as a demo. I never tried to film the progress of a detailed painting before. I think it will be nice to watch it quickly progress with the help of editing. Thanks for your comments and interest! Tom G.
Tom, thank you so much for this demo. It really cleared up some sticking points for me (and I can't seem to type today). I looked on the Rebelle site for the texture brushes you were using. I could not find them. I saw and have the TAG and Flat sets you have up there (thank you) but not the texture ones with the kleenx brush. Am I just missing them or are they not available up there? I find your brushes very helpful as I'm learning to paint, have you ever considered offering your brushes for sale? I know at least one customer you'd have :-) Thanks again for all your videos. Chuck
Hi @chuckdefiore225 There may a few new ones since I last uploaded to Escape Motions assets page. I will send a few more up tonight. I am not set up to sell anything now but if you want to Buy Me A Coffee that would be much appreciated. Thanks a bunch, Tom G.

Excellent video and painting! Thank you for demonstrating each step thoroughly.
I have a question: I'm currently using Rebelle 7. Is there a keyboard shortcut available to deactivate the selections "ants"? I haven't come across this feature yet.
Hi @roberthopkinsart Thank you for the kind words! If you are referring to just turn off/disable a selected area it would be Ctrl + D for a PC. Not sure what you are using, in any case it is under the EDIT Tab in the Keyboard Shortcuts. I have Rebelle 7 Pro and did not even get a chance to use it much. I have too many demos under way with R6 that I would like to complete first. Thanks for the comment! Tom G.
Thanks for replying, Tom!
Using Photoshop, or I think ArtRage too, once you have a selection selected you can turn off the little dots that surround the area selected. Yes, pressing Ctrl/Cmd+D deselects the region. Those pesky little ants can be distracting while painting. To the paint it is hard to see if you are painting right up to the edge. If there is a way to turn the ants off then that would be great! :)
Hi Robert, OK I got you now. Unfortunately I do not know of a way or if there is one. One work around could be the Water Tool. Cover your selected area with water (Show Wet Turned ON) and then turn on the Transparency Lock before you Turn OFF the Show Wet. For my own work I use this method more than any other since I am frequently do this in Traditional Watercolors. In Traditional the color will run and bleed right up to the edge of the water and no further. If the "Ants" bother your painting style then maybe the Lock Transparency would help? Try 24:47 of this demo.. If you want to go back to this demo

it will show how I use the Lock Transparency to protect an area within a protected area. Good Luck, Tom G.
Perfect! That answers my question. Thanks, Tom! I did stumble across the Lock Transparency on my last painting and that worked for my mountain landscape. Got you on the Turn Wet on technique. Another great idea. Thanks, Mate! Happy painting!
@@RobertHopkinsArt Happy to hear it will be a good work around. Tom G.
