    I just opened up my ONKYO receiver, cleaned it with Contact Cleaner, pasted a heat sink on the DTS Chip and it started working flawlessly without any issue.

    I admire this kid's obvious thirst for knowledge. Now, those of us with a little more advanced understanding of repairing these things would not use this method to repair this, at least he didn't put the whole board in the oven like alot of people seem to be doing lately.

    Thanks! I had this happen to me a couple days ago. I shot it with a blow dryer for 30 seconds and it worked for about 10 minutes. I did it again and it's been running ever since. I guess I'm lucky, I've had no issues since I bough it new 4 years ago.

    I used the reflow method to fix my tx nr807 from dying and put in 2 funs in it after that. One to blow air directly on the dts chip and one to draw out the heat from the avr. Since then I have been using the
    A/V for months without this issue again but before that even after reflow it barely last for a day without turning sound off again, so I Think the cooling method is the only way to save it after reflow.

    • @whyohmean
      @whyohmean Před 6 lety +3

      I bought one of those laptop cooling pads and plugged it into the USB on the rear of the unit. Mine has been operating fine since around March of 13. It has just started with the sound issue. I found that I also have no ethernet connectivity when the sound issue is present. By placing it in NET mode, cycling power on the unit, I get Network Initializing prompt on my TV. Once that works, I can then change to one of my HDMI inputs. I have found that by leaving it streaming a station on NET for a short while seems to be more reliable.
      If I quickly change to one of the HDMI inputs after getting the network initializing prompt, it will sometimes quit again.
      This is my 2nd Onkyo receiver in 8 years and I'm losing faith in their product. I certainly hope they will stand by this and fix it even though it's out of warranty. It's what I expect from a quality product.

      +nickhow100 Yes, Onkyo does allow you to return the unit by going to: www.onkyousa.com/Support/service_info.php . The unit in the video had been previously repaired. Please note that once you get the unit back you MUST put a heatsink on the DTS chip by Texas Instruments (the one shown in the video) or else the same thing will happen again.

  • @diamonddave7555
    @diamonddave7555 Před 3 lety

    It works because it brings the low temp solder to flow and fills any micro cracks from excessive heat...need heat sink on 'hot' chips.

  • @donrutter6765
    @donrutter6765 Před 6 lety +1

    Once Onkyo stops repairing thair mistake, find a mini fan that will work off of a low voltage source in the amp and solder it over the chip. Use your test light to find a supply voltage that matches the fan. You can change the voltage with resistors too. While you are at it put a fan on the chips that bolt to your heat sink.

    My TX-NR709 has been supposedly fixed last year but it just failed again today and they wont fix it again. I guess it wasn,t really repaired so I am going back to YAMAHA. Got three of those already and never ever had any problems at all. Goodbye ONKYO...

    • @JoshuasRecordings
      @JoshuasRecordings  Před 8 lety +3

      +Luc Daig yes, you see they replace the chip but they do not put a heatsink on it. It is just going to happen again in a year or two. Onkyo makes very, very good AV receivers though. The problem with this batch is a chip made by Texas Instruments. Texas Instruments claimed the chip does not need a heatsink - it does! So the chip overheats. This really is not Onkyo's fault and is the fault of TI. Like I said Onkyo's AV receivers are a superb quality. When I get them repaired I put a heatsink on the chip. I got one repaired last summer by Onkyo (that I found at the dump!). Put a heatsink on the chip and it is still working great!

    there are video's online how to reflow the print in a normal oven(220pre heated 10 min.)
    warming the chip wil just make it al expand thus reconecting the broken tin connection,temporarly.
    prevent this problem from happening? let it get air to breath, yes it needs cooling,
    covering it in anny way wil speadup the dieing proces,
    heat can solve it temporerly, but is is also the cause of this problem.

    I have a TX-NR717 and my search gave me two possible failures. One is a "defect" (see below ) DTS Chip and the other one is a general failure at the HDMI board. So i wanted to try the baking of the HDMI board in the oven... This completely failed because the HDMI board is connected to a 90° angled PCB and i could not evaluate which kind of the connection is, fixed or mated, i was not able to unlink the connection. Therefore i decided to do a partial heat up of the whole HDMI board with a construction lighter with control of a laser thermometer where i could check the temperature at single spots. This is very important because the max T of the PCB in consumer applications is 85°. I controlled the T at the Chip and also on the PCB, after 10 minutes i had partially 150° on the solder joints and 90° on the PCB.... What should i say more as if all functions of the receiver are working! I could not locate the failure but who cares....

  • @KingOfKYA
    @KingOfKYA Před 8 lety

    Its due to bond wires that connect the slicon inside to the pins on the outside package. The microscopic wire is reconnectign when the copper expands in the small bond wire.

    • @slimes3557
      @slimes3557 Před 8 lety

      I do not believe it's related to bonding, i assume it is a so called
      "cold solder joint" where the solder joints are being recrystallized due
      to temperature cycles. Worst case is the solder joint brakes, in this
      case the solder tin structure could be restored and the contact
      resistance could be lowered.

In FM radio the speakers sound good while if I put on video1,2,3 or CD and try to reproduce the audio coming from the various sources the left channel does not play, only the right works. If I put it on the radio it works perfectly. What should I check once opened? thanks and to the next video. ps: If I leave it unplugged for a few days and then mention it, both speakers work for a few minutes in every situation. What can it be? Sorry my english but i'm italian. thank you

    is the main control chip for your surround sound unit that's what the DTs chip does it controls all the functions for your surround sound evidently have a cold solder joint on the chip and it's a contact with all the contacts on the board you want it overheats it breaks contact and it shuts down what you are doing is heating it up and possibly doing a temporary connection to the board and you will notice it'll work for a while and then it'll shut off again what needs to be done as the chip removed from the board ship needs to be ribald and re-soldered to the board but you obviously don't have the right equipment to do it

    obviously a process issue, a cold solder joint that broke due to fatigue of the material due to normal use. When you heat the device, the pins that lost contact, dilate and make contact again. It is best to have them replaced the board right away. The heat and electricity travels on these board basically wear out the cheap coating used on these types circuit boards. The heat/cold expansion causes the short circuit. Hopefully you're within your warranty. i had mine replaced within 2 weeks at the authorized repair center and learnt the real problem from the technician ultimately.

    • @JoshuasRecordings
      @JoshuasRecordings  Před 9 lety

      rayred73 What do you mean "the real problem". The problem is with the DTS (DAC) chip, it gets too hot and causes the solder joints to go cold/cracked. To fix it properly you need to reflow the solder or reball the DAC.

    • @rayred73
      @rayred73 Před 9 lety

      Real problem was referred as overheating board with cheap coating which caused cracking of and soldered connecting as I was told. The CHIP can be a driving factor. Didn't mean to stop over boundary.

    • @JoshuasRecordings
      @JoshuasRecordings  Před 9 lety

      rayred73 No, I was just asking, you didn't step over any boundary. Also just want to make sure you know that the coating of the board is not the problem, it is the solder. What would of fixed it is if they just used a heatsink in the first place.

  • @TheTNmonitormen
    @TheTNmonitormen Před 6 lety +8

    You really have not fixed it(the sound issue) the problem is in the dts chip itself, that is the nano connectors or most know them as "Gold layering's(traces)" Because when this chip gets hot, and due to expansion and contraction of the chip set, eventually it breaks down under the cooling process. Thus, when you heat it up you close the open traces. Failure to provide proper heat sink and cooling fan, is a plan for disaster. At one time it was the solder and being a ball solder chip set, the poor solder broke down and opened the connections. Today we use higher tensile solder so rarely do you have to reflow, which is a short term fix. The best process is to remove the chip set, clean, and use a reballing machine chip soldering station, if you can afford one, 5K up, the better ones 10-20k up. Wrap up, the best way is to R & R the defective chipset with a new one, if you can find one. BTY, manufacturers are getting greedy and smart, they are now putting Bios ID's (like Apple) in their chipsets for that particular unit
    and must be programed for that unit, which means any identical chipset will not work but must be programed by the manufacturer for that unit, Reason, you know!

      Johnny Onkyo Thanks to your post I just went through this process. Have to say that its an absolute joke the trade in value you guys are offering considering you built a defective unit and now I have to go out of my way to get it repaired. Thanks to this complete lack of customer service this will be the first and LAST Onkyo product I ever buy. I should have known to spend a few dollars more for the Sony equivalent. Now I am paying for it with a broken unit that's costing me loads of my personal time to get sorted out. I will make sure anyone that I know (facebook, Instagram, twitter) will never purchase from your company.

    you have to reflow the solder beads under the processor chips. the halogen light doesn't get hot enough. you need a heat gun. Harbor Freight has one for $8. the solder beads loses connection because over time the heat inside causes the PCB to warp

      Anders Johnson The Real problem was the board or the chip on it.
      I tried to heat it but it’s never works... I write long email to Onkyo, said I was disappointed about their product.
      They write me that I can claim warranty even if my Onkyo has 9year old.
      They ship me prepaid box, I ship my Onkyo to somebody and after 3 weeks I receive it and it’s work like brand new one!
      You can try the same way, I hope you’ll find same issue than me. Oh and after 9 month after repairs, I have new trouble. I just remplace it by a Yamaha... I have my old Onkyo here if you want me to try something ;p (sorry for my not-perfect English, I’m French (Québec))

  • @Landotter1
    @Landotter1 Před 9 lety +2

    One of 3 things is happening.... First of all, it is a BGA device. As you see, there are no leads on the part. If you need to change it, you have to have a BGA rework station. it has special optical sections that allign the part, perfectly so the balls of solder on the chip meet the landings on the board. That being said... A) the part, inside could be faulty and heat will warp the part causing things inside, to reconnect and it will work. 2) the bottom of the BGA part is warped and a ball or more isn't making proper contact with the board and when heat is applied, the part warps, causing the ball/s to contact properly and it works. 3) The main bord could be warped, not perfectly flat, and the balls won't make good connection either. In any case, there is a process problem, either with the part, the soldering of the part, or the main bord not being made to spec. BGTAS are very hard to diagnose because you can't see the solder balls or resolder them. Get used to seeing this all the time, for 2 reasons.... A) lead free solder sucks and is very difficult to do a good solder job with. B) most parts are going BGA, with no leads except the solder balls on the bottom of the part. At the end of the day, the only things you can do are send it back to the manufacturer or certified repair station or junk it and buy a new one. Since it is warranty, let them have the headache. If manufacturers are smart, they will make things modular and just replace boards and not complete units. As for your description, unless you have a BGA rework station, you won't be repairing BGA problems, at least not correctly.

    Something I do not understand? I, like many owners over the years and on different models of receiver have the same problem!!! Than Onkyo replace the controversial chip for many as well as me, after the expiration of warranty period. But they did not solve the problem of bad design.
    Istead of permanently eliminate the problem, thy only solve the consequencerather than the cause, replacing of defective chip?.Obviously, they do not care about their reputation, or they do not realize that the next device I,am buying will not be Onkyo.

    • @davybloggs1564
      @davybloggs1564 Před 6 lety

      Miodrag - Apparently ALL Rx made between 2009 and 2012 has this overheating DTS chip in them, so all of them are a ticking time bomb, waiting to fail - not a question of if, but when! IMHO Onkyo should sue Texas Instruments for these repairs (maybe they have), and force them to supply small heatsinks with fans to they can be retro fitted to all units, IF overheating is the cause of the failures.
