You don't get enough credit for how valuable the information in your videos is. Thanks for being here man.
As the current owner of this fine amplifier I think you captured the tone pretty well here. It has a certain tonal quality that really thumps you in the chest, which in my experience is a bit of a rarity in solid state amps. As you covered in the video, it does a very good Metallica scooped type of tone. But I feel like it excels in making a very cool and unique death metal tone. You dial it in proper and it is tight, but still retains a very good bass response. The way it palm mutes and pushes the lows is probably my favorite thing about this amp. Underrated gem of an amp for sure. I will be keeping this one.
I'm a simple man, I see Peavey SS content, I watch, I like, I subscribe
I can't believe I've never heard of this amp, I dig it too . At 51 yrs old , for solid state I grew up with the RaGe series . Played through alot of CRATe and was partial to Randall solid state amps
I have owned a Peavy Special 130 1x12 SS combo since new in 1982. EV12M speaker heavy as hell but will stop an elephant at 50 yards. One trip to the shop in 40 years, Awesome
I love that you do old and forgotten amps. Just proves you don't have to have the shiniest and newest stuff to get great tones.
I had one of these in college back when they were new. The head is long gone, but the 4x12 is still holding strong. Thanks for bringing attention to this beast.
Keeping up with the solid state theme, it would be great to see you do a demo on an Ampeg VH140C. They are usually attributed to death metal, but I used one for a hardcore band for over 10 years. It's a great solid state high gain amp. Also, believe it or not, T75s are a great pairing for that head.
How's the older SS140C compare?
@@dq7860 I'm pretty sure it's the same amp. Also, the Crate GX-130C is pretty much the same. Last I checked the Crate was super cheap. I sold my Ampeg VH140C for about $800 about 5 years ago. That's only $200 less than what I paid for it in 1996, lol.
Ss140c is a little warmer with a little less gain. Just as good
@@travisspaulding2222 The GX130C is not the same as the VH140C, but it can cover the same ground. I've compared them side by side and the Crate is darker and smoother, the Ampeg is more raw and aggressive, different mid character. The Crate Tidalwave (not the Shockwave), VTX350H, and VTX200S, however, are confirmed copies of the VH140C with an added mid gain channel. I have the VTX350H and it is an absolute monster.
I had the Ampeg SS 150 that was a great amp!
Played a TransTube Supreme for years!! It was my 1st head when I ventured into using a half stack in my teens. Loved it! Covered all my skate punk post hardcore needs till I upgraded to a 5150II. Always have a soft spot for the Supreme series as it’s tone that reminds me of my youth.
I couldn't tell you how many of these amps I have played through in the past few decades. Honestly, I couldn't. They were so prolific across the south east where I live. Countless guitarists I have jammed with owned one or another varient. Soooo many combos....And stacks as well.
Oh boy I want one of these! The old peavey stuff is fantastic, it's all I've used in my last few videos.
Just so easy to find acceptable tones imo
Great video Kyle!
I love these kind of videos, old, lesser known and solid-state amps. Very cool.
I bought this amp when it 1st came out! I still have it. It was the 1st real amp I ever bought. I used it all through the 90’s and into 2003. It toured with me, was thrown down stairs, countless beers spilled on it! IT NEVER FAILED! Not once. I just had it serviced last year and it still sounds great. Best solid state amp ever made IMO! Great video!
Agreed, damn thing is bomb proof and also a heavy bastard to carry
Awesome
Been following the channel for just under a year now and helped get me back in to playing after 10 years away. Got a 5150 a few months ago. Was child hood dream amp. I started to listen to your videos as a pod cast while driving and it’s nice to listen to it that way too.
Glad to hear it, man! Thanks so much for being here!
@@belligerentamateur bro can I buy that from you? Lol
I was waiting for this video and didn´t got dissapointed, impressive demonstration as always, you did justice to this bonecrushing monster of amp!
Ahhh yes! One of the older Peavey Heads I had back...in '07 with rack gear and Ibanez 7-strings writing/recording industrial metal with my old band 🤘🏻 lol good times, great amp! Need to pick up another one
It’s the amp At The Gates used on Slaughter Of The Soul with an SD-1, HM-2 and MT-2 in front of it.
Nailed it. I would say "thanks for making these things go to $1k+ on the market" but....no one gets rid of or sells them. I'd be curious of the Revolution of this era is similar.
Had one for years, it was a great amp and never let me down.
I’ve got a stereo chorus 212 and have always been amazed by the gain channel with the super sat knob. Cool sound!
Peavey made a head version of the Stereo Chorus 212, called the "Revolution".
I used to own one, my biggest regret was selling it, this is a phenomenal amp, best sound on any amp I ever owned, death metal, thrash etc. Perfect for my style, love the amp, great to hear one again.
Same! I had one back in the 90s - sold it to guitar center in 2001 or 2002. For probably $100 or so at most 😢
my old blue stripe Bandit was one of the best tones I ever had. Now I rock a Randall RX120RH that will be pried from my cold dead hands. Went down the whole "warm tube toan" road for a few years and landed back home on brutal analog solid state powah
This has been my main live amp for 25 years. It's a workhorse, and it can give you a great tonal quality with power. I go directly in front of the head with my Pedal board setup, no effects loop. 🎸
Dude I've been listening to this video while working not even paying attention that it is solid state until you mentioned it at the end. This is one of the most tube sounding solid states I've heard and usually my ear picks of that solid state sound. I remember seeing these at pawnshops for cheap years ago.
Excellent thorough review bro! Among the best when it comes to reviews bro. Knowledgeable af. 🧙🏾♀️
I had the peavey special 112 back in the early 2000's inherited it from my dad. Used to slave the preamp into a marshal avt150h/5150cab for my first rig lol
I have one of these but way too loud for home use. Can connect it to my a half stack 4X12” or two 4x12” - each speaker cabinet has original 1960’s Celestion Greenbacks. I mostly use my Peavey 112 Teal combo with Sheffield speakers at home. Still it’s such a really nice amp that I will not part with. Peavey are so underrated with their amps - which was great because I picked em up for a song 😊
the shift button change the frequency the mid knob affect, try it again and play with the mid button, it cover quite a bit of ground! You have good ears to hear the change with the mid knob so close to noon ;)
Found this very amp and matching cab for sale near me. I’m buying it solely due to this review. Thanks for the great info as always.
This and the teal stripe peavey bandit are awesome
Kyle great video man, honestly I was looking at one of these on web and planning to buy it...and now I'm getting one for sure. Thank you bro for very very awesome video. By the way, awesome guitar man...and holy shh... That wall of amps behind you...jaw down man hahah 😁🤘💪
Awesome! Same era as the classic Bandits!
I used to have one of these ages ago. They were badass amps I ran mine through a Carvin 4x12 with the BR12 speakers. It can get very honky if you V the EQ
Had one back in '92. I would run a 32 band eq with a smiley face through the FX loop. Woofers would blow out a kitchen match and would squeal like a dying pig. Played stuff like Death and Savatage and all the underground Metal stuff.
That bit of “stranglehold” in the beginning was hype
I dig your take on amps. Your reviews convinced me to stick with my TSL. My problems with it came from set up and jumbled cables. I wouldn’t have sorted it out if you hadn’t shown what it can do in your review. I also sought out and bought a Valveking Mkll. Its amazing. If Peaveys cheap amps sound that good, i cant wait to try a “good” one.
I have some killer amps and the TSL hangs. It’s so underrated. It just needs a boost
Had one of these for my old hardcore band. Fucking killed. Had beautiful musical feedback. Heavy as hell especially for a solid state. Got stolen out of my car unfortunately. I still miss this beast of an amp. :(
Nice. Cool sound-kinda velcroey.
Aw man I like it when you play clean for 2 seconds! Especially after saying that it’s good! Some of us DO like to play pretty cleans AND belligerent… ly. It’s why I bought the OG 5150 2x12 combo.
I've been playing the Supreme 160 since 1992 and can tell you for a fact that you don't need an OD pedal. As a side note, when using X2N style pickups you should use the Low Input. That will get rid of the excess noise.
I have the Special 160. Basically the same amp, but as a combo. Scorpion 12’ speaker. Heavy!
I bought it new in 1990 or so. Traded it for a Marshall once, went back back to the shop the next day to get my Peavey back.
He made me beg for it, but it was worth it.
I’ll never sell this one again. Solid as a rock!
The Peavey Special 112 is the combo version of this amp. It is one of the best all around amps I have owned. I love my tube amps but these old Peavey blue stripe amps are one of the best values around. The combo is heavy but man does it shock people when you put it through a 4x12 cab.
Between you and Taylor, I've really been gassing for some of these solid state heads!
Great video, it sounds a lot (maybe even exactly) like a Peavey Revolution Head.
I'm beginning to have second thoughts on selling my Revolution, but it was just gathering dust in my living room and it's an amp that deserves to be played (LOUD).
I have the Revolution and the special 112 160 watt blue stripe which is the supreme 160 in combo form. Yes it is the same preamp with different power sections. Awesome amps probably the most versatile amps I have, and the clean channels take pedals great as well.
I used to tour with 2 of these. Loved em. great sound. That being said. One caught on fire. The other that i still have has transistor problems. I will not part with it. It has a sound like no other. I replaced them with 2 triple x's And was not sorry. I still use this head to get certain sounds. Everyone makes the same mistake with peavey heads. They forget to plug into a OG sheffield cab. I've tried every 4x12 out there. Nothing pleases me like the tone of the ms412 bottom stack loaded with sheffields. Mesa comes close.
I've played one 15 years ago, I keep an eye out for them just no luck lol. It took me 25 years to get my hands on a Peavey stereo chorus 2x12 ( you should do a video on them!) . It's sorta in the same family, but has some built in digital effects ie. True stereo chorus and digital delay. It's 2 separate power supplys in the amp and gives it the true stereo effect. No regrets, just no one really seems to know about these amps! Great video!
Peavey made a head version of their Stereo Chorus 212 called the "Revolution". The Stereo Chorus 212 is a fantastic amp.
@@tomw9875 I'll need to track one down, I love the Peavey stereo chorus 2x12 lol
equipment. I had the Peavey stereo chorus 210 and it sounded pretty great for country, surf and blues but i thought the gain sounded like crap.I know the 212 version did have more gain but I can't see it sounding much better.
Love the vids!! Cheers from a fellow Teal Striper. Love those old Peaveys. Cheers from L.A.
its great, hits those stretchy frequencies really well, although i am biased to liking solid state very well, however now it could use a ceriatone kong to mix more even order harmonics, also i would play that peavey supreme head through some jensen tornado stealth 80's and add a plexi like boost pedaL custom build a clean boost with plexi tone circuit or something to add the plexi sound without anything else. Then the hard thrash side is done, now add your ceriatone yeti or kong with some celestion full backs. put mics all over the speakers play some drop tune or 7 and 8 string thrash, and some leads over some drum tracks. great stuff.
Brutal with the lower tuning. Sounds great
I still have the Studio Pro 110 65 watt combo version of this monster :) It's really like a head version of the Peavey Special or 2 Bandits in one !! I have one of the 412 cabinets that came for the rack stuff, Celestion Vintage 30s and later models had Sheffield 1230s
They have a Peavey Duece with the power tubes from the 70s at my local music store if you're from my area check it out, the marshall JCM900 was sold around the time the one near me got sold and you uploaded about it. 😏
I have an older version of this amp. 120w. It rocks!!!
Awesome content and awesome shirt!
My first "real" amp (upgraded from a Rage)! Such a tank, it survived being run over by my dad's minivan
Sorry to hear it, your dad must of really hated you tho tbh.
IMO solid-states have always been unfairly judged by how they sound through crappy cabs and little open-back combos with crappy speakers.
yeah but solid states will never sound like good tube amps, flimsy. This isn't a bad amp, but you can tell it's SS
I love plugging into older equipment, solid or tube
I've had a mark 3 standard head, a reknown, and still have a 1st gen 100 watt Vyper, and a Bugera 333XL.
I have never heard this model of amp, sound amazing and is versátil, thanks for shareing!!!
Those thick Mids though. Very nice. Looks like I need to find one of these heads.
My first good amp was a Peavey Roadmaster. 160 Watt monster tube amp. I ran out thru a 4/12, and I also had a 2/12 for smaller clubs. Like a fool I got rid of that head. I was a fool. But I did end up with a Fender Princeton Chorus which was awesome in it's own right, but I should have kept both
Just got a tko 115 teal stripe for bass. Stoked about it. Peavey is good stuff man
That amp would really rock combined with a Vai Legacy Drive pedal for the secondary harmonics.
That’s like my old Sunn Beta Lead. 100% solid state, absolute gain monster.
It was my go to rig amp for almost 10 years.
Had one of those back in the day.
this thing is amazing ... in d standart sounds so exodus love it
It's a killer amp
Peavey Solid State' for the win!!!! 🤘🏼 Great vid as always!
Great stuff I love Peavey
Sounds awesome 🤘🏻
I have a USA made 90s era I think Peavey Ultra 60 half stack teal stripe with original cab. That thing is mean and it is loud!!!!
Holy shit. Sounds amazing!
A guitarist I was in a thrash band with for a while had one of these. I thought it sounded really good. Especially when he got a Carvin cab and ditched the Crate 4x12 he had at first.
That amp sounds quite a lot like my Transtube Special 212 when I use it as just a head through my Mesa 4x12 (Sheffield speakers are just awful BTW, so I added a speaker off switch). Transtubes came a little later, but it seems Peavey carried over a lot of what that Supreme had.
It’s wild that at the gates recorded SOTS with this into a home made cab lol
thats what at the gates used on slaughter of the soul with two distortion pedals into the clean
Nice deep dive into this classic beast! Drop C sounds ssssiiiiiiick
I had one like that accept it was a tube amp...4 6L6 and 5 12AX7.
Just discover your channel with this video. That's how we do an amp demo man !
sounds really really good
You are really doing solid state justice.
There was a Revolution I think that was Stereo? Pretty sure, loved playing it at the store
That amp kicks for sure. My buddy owns one and I nearly fell on the floor when I heard it. That is the next level for the Supreme amp IMHO.
@@metald2001 🤘🤘🤘🤘🔥🔥🔥🔥
I feel the gain boost on this era of Peavey amps adds a bit too much highs and cuts a bit too much of the lows, so I used my GE7 as a mid pre-boost and then scooped out the mids a bit with the body at -2 or -3 Mid shift is good :) Truth is, modern hi gain tube amps try to sound like these as well as Randall and some classic tube amps from that same era ;)
Anyone who wants one of these at an even cheaper price, go get a Peavey Special 112 and hook it up to a cabin. They are exactly the same amp except for the impedance selection switch on the Supreme 160.
well done Kyle, this is a great demonstration on how good a solid state amp could sound in a heavy musical environment. do you know the Orange Crush 120/Super Crush head? also a great solid state contender for metal, very versatile, sounds huge and cheap as well. maybe a shootout video? ;-)
Love my super crush 100 head
At 53 years old I can't believe I have never heard of this amazing amp.
I would love to see a video comparing this to the Master Effects Marauder.
I got the peavey revolution head with footswitch I've had it since I was a kid.
Picking this head up tomorrow for $50. Needed a cheap amp out on the garage stage. Hope to finding a matching cab.
I’ve owned a hand full of nice tube amps over the years and sold them all. I’ve come to the conclusion I only like solid state amps. I like this amp. I love my fender m-80. I like the tones of Randall amps.
M-80 +1
Yesssss!!!! I own one of these!!! Been waiting for this video!!! \m/
15:30 - 15:50 sounded really awesome, full, sharp and clear
I've owned 2 of these and I still have the second one.
Haha! I Still Rock This Amp Every Week! The Amp Is Great! 30 Years Ago I Bought It Used!
I have one of these. Think I need to get it fixed.
Love the channel dude. New sub here. You and u play similar style guitar...ever try one of those bluguitar amp1 iridium pedals?......try one man
Nice job Kyle
Awesome bro. For 100$ I will buy 2 of those. Just in case one of them needs a repair. Even for 200$ are a good value. I will also play with one of those wherever, whenever.
All old pv guitar amp is great product. A r3al deal . From solid state to tube amp. No gimmick . Real us / uk sound . The key are on the pre and post knop. To hartley peavey ...bow down kids ...bow down !!! Dunno when this era will be back any time soon 😢
I would love to see what you can do with a Randall T2 those things go dirt cheap. Apparently the Veil of maya used one on their very early days.
Peavey has led the way in innovation.
thanks for another thorough video Kyle :) . Can you try and get a Marshall Lead 100 Mosfet head? So many people on forums say they are the SS JCM800. I own one, but I'm not so sure about the JCM statement. Would love to see what you could come up with. My rig is the Marshall, into a H&K 4x12 with V30's. I'm also using a Tubescreamer clone from Joyo, and a noise gate. I think I'm gonna have mine modded for more gain and bass. These are starting to creep up in price too. Especially the matching 4x10 cabs, known as 1965A and B.
