"Our meadows have more life; our life more loves" is a poem written in 1843 by Gonçalves Dias. He was in Europe at the time and he wrote the poem, called Canção do Exílio (something like Song of Exile), to express how he was missing Brasil. He says: "Our sky has more stars; Our meadows have more flowers; Our woods have more life; Our life more loves."

Thank you for sharing such quality information!
If you excuse me, I'd suggest a modification of the translation title to "Song From The Exile" rather than "Song of Exile". I know nothing of the context, but from a superficial perspective, it seems that he was being somewhat nostalgic about his homeland. I could be wrong tho... sorry if i am!

It is weird that when translated you lose a lot from the artistic side, considering that the anthem was write as a parnassian poem, so it is very difficult to understand the meaning, because it considers more "important" the aesthetic. The translation give you only the meaning but not the sintatics inversions, etc.
All the best of luck to you if you want to translate that poem in a way that keeps both the structure and the meaning. Poems when translated usually keep only one of those. Some translators opt for the structure, others for the meaning. Whatever choice you make, you are writing a new poem, not transporting the same poem into a new language.
That is why poems can only be appreciated in their original language. Good poems take the function of language to the limit. It's like a sculpture of words. You cannot move a piece or it crumbles.
@@antiantipoda Traduttore, traditore...
@@antiantipoda yes indeed. But sometimes it is a pity that if you do not have a deep knowledge in the language, you will not get the full experience. For example, english is not my first language, so even in some movies sometimes I don't get all the references and the same idea works for people that don't speak portuguese. It is a pity for sure, but at the same time it makes the art more beautiful.
@@DanielleCFraga I think that is the beauty of it, not a pity.
My first language is Portuguese. I have been studying English for 30 years now. Every day I learn something new, be it an expression, an accent, a new word. I actually teach English as a side job so I can watch other people learn and learn from them. The more you enjoy the process and add to your repertoire, the more you advance. But there is no finish line, you get to keep on learning forever!
Also, languages change: when I learned it was "I wish I were a lion." I thought it was stupid and made no sense. Years later the wrong way "I wish I was a lion." is now correct and accepted.
Bro it was awesomely translated. I came into the video thinking "I highly doubt they got those fancy words translated right" but they actually did it, apart from one or two.
they should've used fatherland instead
...of homeland
Our anthem literally uses “mãe gentil” as a way to refer to Brazil. Which translates to “gentle mother”. So why do you think it should’ve been used fatherland instead of motherland? All references to Brazil in the anthem refer to the archetype of the mother

Bit late, but one of the reasons why Brazil's anthem is more "peaceful" than other Latin American countries is because our independence was not violent, there was no war like in other countries.
The Portuguese royal family fled from Europe to Brazil, and they were the main characters in the country's independence. Instead of a battle, there was a declaration of independence by the margins of the Ipiranga river (mentioned at the start of the anthem), in which Dom Pedro basically said "btw, this is a country now"
Also, if you want to watch one of the most touching displays of the Anthem, search for the crowd singing it at the Confederations' Cup in 2013. They usually cut the anthem short to half or a quarter of its duration, but due to political turmoil at the time, this didn't stop the people
Wrong. Read this --> en.wikipedia.org/wiki/War_of_Independence_of_Brazil
@ There were some battles. But nothing to the extent of the other American countries.
And we latter made a pact called "friendship treaty" where we basically bough our independence from Portugal by paying its debt with England.

I wonder how much this anthem reflects on the personality of Brazilians. How many times do we hear this hymn at school, or sports competitions. And although there is the valid criticism of being a very far-fetched lyric, it is sometimes difficult to understand. I believe that the Anthem has a positive influence, showing peace as a goal, nature as a greatness and the use of force only as a resource to defend oneself. It's an anthem that has always inspired me with courage, and depending on the context, I even got emotional listening to it.
Thank you Drago, for making me reflect, and yes, being better than Argentina is kind of our sport.
Thanks for your comments. Regards from Brasil.

As a speaker (maybe biased) of both languages, i’d say the english version doesnt pass as much of the sentiment thrived by the portuguese version!
In fact, i believe latin languages are more “poetic” (although i shall mention shakespear, an other few exceptions)!
In portuguese you can tell a very vivid strong sentimental story without repeating a word, and every synonym of the world itself express a _slightly_ different meaning!
I mean, it’s hard to describe, i’d have to learn portuguese as native, and consume poetry to understand
Right on the spot. A thousand words can have the same meaning, at the same time a single word can have thousands of meanings. That's why it's so hard, yet so beautiful, to written in portuguese.
I think it's normal when you try to translate songs or poem. It's like you're loosing part of the meaning in translation.
I am Italian, I studied Spanish for years, but I started to truly appreciate poems and songs in Spanish when I became fluent in that language
I love how "Paz no futuro e glória no passado" translates one of my favorites quotes ever: "si vis pacem, para bellum"

I am brazilian and I find your analysis of our anthem very nice. Thank you. I like how you paid attention on the positive loving words (when compared to other nations more military-ish) and at the end a warning about don't pissing off the brazilian nation. In fact the anthem itself has a military rithm but the warm welcoming feeling for the nation is indee expressed on the lyrics. Great job!
this anthem is by far the most beautiful anthem in the whole world
It talks about nature and size because Brazil is a continental size country with over 60% of the Amazon rainforest, the largest costal line in the planet, the most bio diverse country in the world and the country with most drinkable water too. And much more... so make sense it talks so much about the beauty of nature and the ocean.
And it doesn't talk a lot about war because we didn't have many wars, and the few we did we won all but one. And outside our help in the WW2, the wars we have been part of were small for our size, the mostly happen in the south only so it didn't have much effect in the cultural of the rest of the country. And since we were so big and with so much sweet water and nature there was never problem with ration of food or water, so wars although there was a lot of deaths like any other country, it wasn't a big thing in our history and culture. That might be the reason why the cultural norm in Brazil is to be chill, happy and friendly. The biggest struggles we had in our history were manly government corruption and economical/education inequality after the end of slavery because the government didn't help the people that became free.
The Russian coastal line is larger than ours but it's frozen so, ok. Our is still more enjoyable.
Since it is a rhythm that we sing since we're children at school, it's something that greatly influences our daily lives and the personality of the Brazilian people, Peace, love and treating people with kindness and will, strength that people have even on the worst days and situations, smile at everything, whether in joy or sadness
Our nacional Anthem is one of the most beautiful and powerfull in the world. Your video is fantastic. Thank you for sharing your vision. Maureen, from Brasil!
🇧🇷🇧🇷🇧🇷...love my country and the anthem
Brazil's flag is genuinely one of my favorites
Congratulations to the translator. Great job.
And yes... I am proud of my country's anthem! I did listen to some other countries' anthems and I was surprised about the negative energy in most of them. I like the how Brazilian anthem talks about love and peace.

Amo ❤muito ❤️ o meu querido e amado ❤Brasil ❤❤❤❤❤
I love our anthem 💚 And loved your video, lots of love from Brazil! 🇧🇷
The most perfectly written Anthem in the World! 🌍 Plus ma’am the melody and the possibilities for an orchestra to play with are incredible! On tears every time I hear it!
We Brazilians absolutely love our anthem. It always gives me goosebumps. Our land has great beauty in all regions and our people are loving and welcoming despite our shortcomings in some areas, like every country on earth. As the anthem says “among thousand of other lands, stands Brazil beloved homeland of its children…”💗🇧🇷💗🇧🇷💗
Wow, as a Brazilian myself I loved watching your reaction. I didn't know that other countries speak about revenge and violet stuff in theirs anthem. For us, it's indeed a inspiration moment when we hear it or sing it together, some people even get emotion and cry.
I was trying to read the English translated lyrics when I realized that I'm actually Brazilian so 1) I know the anthem, 2) I can read the Portuguese lyrics and 3) I understand the audio HAHAHAH
I really liked your reaction, you're the only one who did this kind of thing and seemed truthful lol very nice!! And thanks for your words. P.S.: the part about having more flowers is a reference to a famous Brazilian poem called Canção do Exílio (exile song) which is about missing your homeland and the poet says like the place where he is now is beautiful but there is no beauty as the place where he was raised, because he was raised there.
My beautiful country 🇧🇷🇧🇷🇧🇷
On the last part (the "don't piss us off" part), a better translation would be, if you allow me:
"But if you raise, of justice, the strong club
You shall see that your sons do not cower from fight
Or fear those who conjure upon you death itself"
...well, but, as you said, "we are love, love, love, but don't piss us off" also works. 🤣
The best reaction to brazilian anthem out there on the web. Congratulations! Cheers 🇧🇷
part 5:10 is a piece of a poem by a famous and ancient Brazilian poet that they wanted to honor in the anthem.
Every time i sing my homeland anthem the tears come to my eyes. I love my country and this anthem is so inspiring. Tks for this react.
Brazilian here. CZcams recommended me this and I love it. Thanks for the love sz
It´s written in our flag: Order and Progress. The word love was meant to be there too, but they ripped it off.
That was so cool! 👏🏾
Thank you very much for the video
As Brazilian, I am grateful for the way you appreciated our beloved anthem. It's a reason of proud and every time I listen it bring tears in my eyes. Thank you very much for all good words and great analysis. May God Bless you 🙏
The "giant by its own nature" part is a part of a poem someone did after looking at Rio de Janeiro from the sea, it actually look like a giant laying down (kinda)
From my knowledge, the “giant by its own nature” refers to the size of our country - its the biggest in size in South America and the fifth largest in the world. This part of the anthem refers to what nature gave Brazil: size, and a lot of nature, waterfalls, forests, etc
You said our anthem doen't have much violence, its because its out second one. We now call our old ome "Emperial anthem" bacise its from when we declared independende and became an empire.
Its bloody
Even thou i'm not a patriot Anymore, as a musician i really love This anthem, a beautifull song wishing for a better Future for a country with no future
fun fact: the Brazilian anthem was written by Olavo Bilac, one of (if not the) biggest names in Brazilian Parnassianism. it was composed during the period when the Republic was trying to build its national identity and Bilac, as a good Parnassian, made a far-fetched anthem, with words out of colloquial usage, with verses in hyperbate and difficult to sing. the anthem is indeed very beautiful (and idealized), but many people don't even understand what it means. Anyway, overall, we're a very proud people of our anthem and it's hard to find someone who doesn't know how to sing it. 🇧🇷🇧🇷🇧🇷🇧🇷🇧🇷
Excellent
EU AMO O HINO
Loved your review Dragos! 👏👏👏
I have to say, brazilian hymn has erudite and difficult language and poetry. Not very easy to understand, even to people here. Congratulations to whoever did the translation. A really fine job.
It's easier to understand the anthem in English than in Portuguese, belive me I'm from Brazil 😆
Kkkk
Actually........ the Anthem of Brazil is "Evidencias" from Chitãozinho e Xororó. (kkk is a really good joke here)
but nice that you like it. You really got the brazilian way of life "we are full of love, but if you piss us out............things is going to he harsh on you kkk"
HEEEY! So nice to see something Brazil related! Never thought other place people would actually enjoy my home contry Anthem. :D
Hey, Dragos! If you enjoyed the Brazilian Anthem, then you should check out our optional Brazilian Anthem called "Evidências". You're gonna love it!
Your comment is so underrated

Love and hugs from Brazil
Thanks for react, from Brazil!!
U shoulda used a title like "Romanian Comedian reacts to Brazillian anthem", it would call more attention. I Love ur content, keep it up.
you NEED to react our anthem in football games, is something that probably you never saw
Thank you for this!
Yes, you are right! Brazilian independence didn't come through war. The king was from the royal family, and there is some poetry in it, which I'm sure other folks already talked about it in the comments.
O Garotinho é uma comédia.
Brasil eu te amo minha patria!!🇧🇷
Well, as a Brazilian, I think I can add some information: that flag on Brazil says "order and progress". It is a positivist ideology. This ideology was very common in army (witch gave a coup d'etat in our previous emperor, Dom Pedro II). So the anthem follows the same philosophy. It is progressivist and extols the history of how Brazil went independent from Portugal (in a very romantized way, but ok). I have a lot of complains about Brazil, I love my culture and the diversity of my country, I love the history, but yet, I moved to Canada to flee from violence and poverty. And I'm sorry guys, but our anthem is the most beautiful of them all (at least top 3 of the world)
There is no Anthem as Beautiful as the Brazillian anthem. Not even close.
O Hino do Brasil é poético e a melodia é métricamente bem construída.
Adoro esses "reacts" ao nosso hino.
You can't imagine the affect the anthem has on Brazilians. I love it so much. I live abroad and hearing this bring a tear in my eye. Sooo home sick. Love our national anthem.
You guys are making us Brazilians blush 😳
