  • According to a legend from the times when the Oghuzes were divided into two as outer oğuz and inner oğuz, Aruz Koca, one of the outer oğuz beys, set up their tents in a suitable place to stay. While the oğuz, who were tired all day long, were resting, they received the news that there would be an attack. they hurriedly gathered in that chaos and immediately moved away from there. But they forgot Aruz Koca's little son there.
When they find a safe place to stay, they realise that Aruz Koca's son is not there, but it is impossible for them to go back.
Aruz Koca's son was left there alone. The lions who found him took him to their nest and started to feed him like their own cubs.
After a year had passed, the sons returned to the lands where they had fled from the enemy.
One day Aruz husband's horse keeper went to his master in a hurry and said, "Sir, there is a child among the lions in the forest. He behaves just like the lions." She said.
Aruz Koca was both surprised and very happy. Because it could be his lost son. Aruz Koca informed the other beys and went to the forest with them and returned to the Obaya as they took the child.
Aruz husband was very happy. Because he was the lost child. He had tables set and festivities made. But since the child got used to the lions, he went back to the forest as soon as he found the opportunity.
Aruz went to the forest again and brought his son. But each time the boy went back to the lions as soon as he had the chance.
Aruz realised that he could not cope. He immediately sent a message to Dede Korkut and invited him to the lodge. Dede Korkut, who came to the Obaya, talked to the boy. "O son, you are a human being, not a lion, you can make friends with lions. But your real friends are the brave ones in this lodge. Be a valiant young man like them." He said.
Then he said, "Let your name be Basat. We named you, may Allah bless your good fortune." He said and went away.
As the days passed like water, with the arrival of the summer season, the oğuz began preparations for migration to the plateau. When the belongings were collected, they set off. The Yellow Shepherd, the shepherd of Aruz Koca, was guiding them.
When the Yellow Shepherd, who was leading the way, reached the long spring, he saw the fairies near the spring and threw his cap on one of them and forcibly took her to another place.
The fairy girl finally managed to get rid of the Yellow shepherd. Then, when she flapped her wings and rose into the air, she said to him: "I have your trust. Come here after one year and take your trust. And know this well that you have caused a great trouble for the boy." He said and flew away.
Although the yellow shepherd could not make much sense of the fairy girl's words, he was still scared.
A year later, when they were going to the highlands again, the Yellow shepherd was going ahead of them all. When they reached the long spring, he saw that the fairy girl was at the head of the spring. Next to her was a round thing covered with a membrane.
The fairy girl said, "Here is your safety, this trouble is more than enough for the province of oğuz." Then she took wing and flew.
When the yellow shepherd approached the thing covered with dice and touched it, the creature grew. The yellow shepherd, frightened, flew away from there without even looking back.
When Bayındır Khan, Aruz Koca and the braves reached the spring, they touched the creature they saw. At that moment the membrane ruptures and out of it comes a giant whose body resembles a human being but has only one eye on his head.
Bayındır Khan named him Tepegöz because he had only one eye in the centre of his forehead. Aruz husband asked permission from Bayindir Khan to raise Tepegoz with his son Basat.
Bayindir Khan accepted this offer and gave him permission. Taking the Cyclops with him, Aruz Koca started to raise him with his son Basat.
Days followed weeks, weeks followed months, months followed years, Tepegöz and Basat grew up. Tepegöz could easily drink a bowl of milk a day and was growing very fast. As he grew, he became more and more angry and harmed those around him.
He became such that he did not care about anyone and did not listen to anyone. Day by day he was harming the boy more and more.
The gentlemen, who could not stand what he did, complained about the Cyclops to the aruz husband. Seeing that the Cyclops did not listen, Aruz husband finally expelled the Cyclops from the Obadan.
When the Cyclops settled in a cave he found in the mountains, the Fairy Godmother watched him from afar. She went to the cave and put a magic ring on his finger.
