[NOTES]
(1) WHAT OIL TYPE SHOULD I USE?
Different climatic conditions require different weights of oil. For our customers here in Florida, we advise on using SAE 30 oil for Kohler engines and 20W50 oil for Kawasaki engines. Main Street Mower always recommends using Air Cooled Engine Oil and OEM filters, as opposed to automotive alternatives . Call your local mower shop to find out more about the appropriate oil types depending on your climate.
(2) HOW OFTEN SHOULD I CHANGE MY OIL?
Both Kohler and Kawasaki engines typically require an oil change in every 100 hours. However, these engines burn about 1/4 oz of oil every hour. Waiting a full 100 hours before the oil change would leave you only about a Quart of engine oil in the machine. Main Street Mower suggests doing an oil change every 50 hours, here in Orlando, due to the heat and amount of use. Remember, running an engine hard and low on oil is the recipe for a blown engine.
(3) HOW DO I CHECK ENGINE OIL LEVEL?
On Kohler engines and all other engines made in US, thread the dipstick all the way in. For Kawasaki and all other engines made in Japan, do not thread the dipstick, just put it in, then pull it out.

Great video l use Kawasaki oil it's great 20w50 every 50 hrs if you go 100 hrs l would recommend Amsoil 15w50 oil l would not recommend 100 oil change in Florida it's too hot
Thanks for the input Harry, we would agree!
Kawasaki oil is made by Citgo I'm impressed with the quality of the oil 👍
Splash lubed Breaks & Scrapem engines that use SAE30 oil, the best oil currently available is Walmart Super Tech HD30 Diesel oil that comes in a gallon jug and sells for around $16. Oil stays clean and engine runs smooth.
In 50 years of oil changes I've never seen ANY brand oil filter leak, and Super Tech oil filters are high quality and several fit lawn mowers.
I just wanted to say thank you for helping out Al Bladez❤
Thank you.
I’ve used the orange Fram and 10W-30 Mobil 1 for 20 years on a John Deer LT180 with a Kawasaki 17 hp V twin. 1600 hrs. Still starts easy and burns no oil. Gave the JD to my sister. Now I got a 23hp Toro engine on my Toro zero turn. I’m sure that’s gonna last. It’s very well built. I use Fram oil filters only.
I tried fram, kept having them leak and come loose. I stopped, using them.
I’ve got a toro titan max with a 26hp kohler. Dealer recommends and uses the blue Kawasaki 20w-50 exclusively. Called another dealer nearby and they do the same. Thought it was interesting. Located in central/south Florida
I had the 25hp Kawi and she dropped valves. And I ran full syn 10w-30. Ck my oil all the time. My new kohler 25hp is showing wear running Mobil 1 full syn 10w-30. Definitely trying something heavier.
I run Amsoil small engine 15w-50 in my Scag Vridell, with Kawasaki oil filter. I switched from Kawasaki 20-50, and there is a difference. I run Amsoil in every motor I own and I’m a believer.
So, what is the difference? I am curious to know.
Don't forget about the importance of a clean air cleaner. I think that is overlooked way to often!
So right
Absolutely agreed!
Too
Well done
Thank you
Amsoil diesel & wix filters. How can you beat that? Grades of oil depending on your location of course
Diesel for more zinc than their small engine oil.
I use royal purple race oil. Hps or xps oil. Hps 10w-40 is pretty good for Ohio. It's like $10/qt and has high phosphorus and zinc. Xps 10w-40 or 10w-50 are also really good race oils, but pricier. I'm afraid to run 20w-50 because we aren't really ever above 90 in the summer and fall/spring can be 50s. Amzoil small engine 10w-40 is pretty good too, but I had oil consumption/evaporation issues with that spec of oil.
Makes sense. You gotta adjust your fuel depending on your local weather conditions. Thank you for sharing.
I switched to Kawa 20W-50 in my Kohler engine. I could tell it was running too hot when mowing on those Tennessee, 90+ degree days, and it was for sure going through too much oil--probably topping off every other 1-1/2 hour mowing cycles. It smells less hot and I top off maybe twice per 50 hrs. Expensive oil, however.
Thank you for sharing.
Was it running hot before or after the switch?
Is the Kawasaki SAE 30W a detergent oil?
Clean oil is good oil , of the correct weight of course.
Can someone help me or am I'm worrying about nothing? I have the 7000 series kt725 22 hp 725 cc on my Toro Timecutter. Anyway I bought the tuneup kit and it came with the kohler oil filter..but as I was about to take off the old filter i noticed it said Kohler pro performance on it and it's a little longer then the new one that came in the tune kit for the 7000? Can I still put that none pro performance that's shorter then the original...?!? It's weird cause the part numbers match and the new oil filter seems a tad bit shorter and doesn't say pro performance on it like the old one does....
You will be just fine, as long as it’s OEM. All the kohler filters will fit and work properly.
20W50 is standard diesel motor oil grade. Tell me why I shouldn't use that.
Hello sir, your video is so informative can I include it in my blog post?
Please do
Also share the link with us, maybe we can post it on our community tab. Thank you.
I use car oil (after 50hrs) I am using synthetic 10w30 cub cadet xt1 42in.
It’s better than the oils in this video.
@@user-tb7rn1il3qNo it's not. Automotive engines are water cooled with a fixed temp. Small engine oils are designed for higher temps. So they are NOT better.
Easy, Mobil 1 in the correct weight for all engines.
Wrong! Mobil 1 is NOT a true pao oil such as Amsoil. Only trust a 100% synthetic if you are going that route. Homework!!!
@@daniellang6112 Okay I've only been using Mobil 1 in small engines for over 40 years with no problems.
We don't need no stinkin homework.
P.T. Barnum summed it up best.
I agree. I’ve used 10W-30 Mobil 1, and orange Fram. Runs perfectly and burns no oil. Gave to my sister with 1700 hours. Starts easy even in late fall here in Minnesota.
Fantastic video what is the best oil fir the Kawasaki fj180v with oil filter
We recommend SAE 30 in the FJ180V
@@mainstreetmower thanks very much great videos 👍
@@vincentsgardens870 Thanks for watching 🙂
Kawasaki recommends you look at the API temperature chart for what oil you use in the area you live 😁😁 sorry for the babble
Where would I get Kawasaki oil?
I use VP racing small engine oil 10w30.
Any mower shop, repair shop.
Maybe a Kawi motorcycle shop/dealer?
I use Walmart Supertech Full Synthetic Advanced 10W30 in my lawn mower. It’s far superior and less expensive to any of the oils in the video.
How is it superior?
I have 3 Kawasaki engines they don't burn a drop 😁. How about 2 cycle next? The only oil l don't use is Stihl oil l will let you know later take care my friends
Who makes Kawasaki engine oil?
Citgo
what if the book calls for 10/30
10W-30 and SAE30 are very similar, SAE30 also called straight weight is ideal for hot climates where the machine won’t be operating below 40 degrees. 10W-30 has a winter weight (10W) blended with SAE30 to make it more versatile in a climate with hot and cold temperatures. We are in Florida that’s why we recommend the SAE30.
@@mainstreetmowerThere will be less startup wear with 10W30. There is zero reason to use straight 30 in anything in any climate. Always use 10W30 synthetic.
I have a jd I use jd oil
That's good to know. Have you had any issues with it?
@@mainstreetmower the la125 is 14 years old and the e130 is 3 no issues
@@jp-us9rq That's awesome. Thank you for sharing.
@@mainstreetmower i never owned a kawasaki yet just briggs.tell u what I never had any issues with the briggs motors.if u do ur oil changes change fuel fter plugs air filter any engine will last
@@jp-us9rq Totally agreed. We love Briggs engines too. Keep a track of your servicing and maintenance and those engines would last you a lifetime.
Why not just use automotive oil?
Automotive oil doesn’t have much zinc in it. This is an essential additive for hotter air cooled engines
@@mainstreetmower I was wondering because it seems like a lot of people use it. I use Honda oil for my Honda and kawasaki oil for my kawasaki. Thanks for the info.
Use anything other than a fram oil filter 😂😂😂
Fram works great. Zero issues.
Kawasaki does not make oil. Kawasaki pays Citgo for their oil.
Of course. But Kawasaki tell Citgo what the recipe is.
