Year Zero is brilliant. I used to think it was about the time and place in which it was written, but now i realise that it is a dark prophecy of the world we will all inhabit sooner than we would like.
ajmak jerome it’s different to the studio version. It could possibly be alternate takes that they didn’t use in the final version. In all fairness this was created using modular synths which would be very difficult to recreate live.
ajmak jerome it was mostly done live. When The Spiral (fan club) existed and NIN would do private chat parties Aaron North explained how he’d play the loop live then switch Alessandro which he’d switch to Trent with the Jazzmutant Lemur and Trent would manipulate the tail end of each line to it’s finish. Note its not just synths but Aaron used a console guitar also.
I could be wrong but I think an analog Moog sythesizer ( no samples) that the bass sequence runs through. Trent and Alessandro tweek the filters, oscillators, envelopes, and distortion effects pedal.
1) This song kicks ass. 2) This live kicks MAJOR ass. 3) I almost pissed myself when the breakdown started 2 minutes in. 4) The lights and effects kick GALACTIC DEITIES ASS.
I seen them in Lincoln, Nebraska in 2005 and the sound was so incredible you could feel the bass rattle your bones in your spine. I've seen many great bands, but Trent Reznor will always have the best sound on the road. Top notch, like... he's at eleven.
I'm into Nine Inch Nails since I saw "Head Like A Hole" back in 1989 on TV - seen TR and his crew twice on stage. He plays a big part in my life - his music has been there, like almost forever by my side. Not many musicians/artists can get so close to the "core" and even take a place inside one's heart and mind. Thanks TR for giving us the chance to witness the beauty of creating your own universe and sharing it with your "fans". This live version is so damn good!
Shit man... I am a huge NIN fan, one who gained extreme passion around 2000 while a part of the failed so-called 'rave' scene. I am still a huge fan of dark electronica genres such as DnB, Dark-step, Dubstep, etc... This track, and in particular this performance, has the craziest, most insane, and by far the greatest 'drop' I have ever heard/witnessed. Amazing.
this song reading festival 2007,and two minutes in a group of indie kids stood near us with their fingers in their ears.we were right by a hanging speaker stack.was just awesome sound.ha ha ha
It always bugs me that this minimalist/industrial live version of NIN only lasted that short while. It lends itself so well to that side of NIN. Not all of Trent's music has live drums, so this was a genius move!
really, has to be admitted this is quite good. I didn't know they were pumping out so much quality in their tour middle of 09. Like the precision of the synchronization of the lights. I want that when I play live. The music and real-time performance? I've always respected the way trent, of any live-performance electronic musician, balances between the live and the automated,...in this case he lets the sequencing and effects go live and nothing gets lost for talent, IMO. Great stuff.
best memory of this song..... friends and i went to some hard rock bar. friend put this on the juke box 7 times in a row. everyone was into it the first 2 times maybe! hahahaha.
You r never too old to find inspiration in younger artist actually that what makes trent stay fresh so... this is more like the electronics from middle early 90's inspiring
As awesome as a full NIN ensemble rocking the house may be (and is), I really wish I could have (and hopefully may yet still) see(n) a stripped down, electro-based session like this. Unbelievable.
Who said NIN isn't industrial? It's true that Reznor didn't start the genre (Skinny Puppy was IMO, as someone else's already written), but he was responsible for making the genre what it once was: the best fucking music ever. Nine Inch Nails is the icon of industrial rock.
@SplinkyStudiosFilms Yes but in this song he use a drum machine. Vocal harmony can be with software like autotunes, but here they are 3 components sing this part for make it.
I was there in Stockholm. Great concert, but I felt bad for the Trent (and the band) that the venue wasnt full. Deserved better. Shame he never came back =(
Wonder how that whole break sequence was prepared, was it all made on the spot with hardware/plugins or just a bunch of precut loops being fired via some launchpadesque controller. My bet is loops going through some additional FX
Ah cool :) I saw him down in Florida this past July and it was one my best days in years. I had a blast :D The light show was no way as cool as this, though. Very typical. But Trent wore white pants, so was a sight in it's self LOL

This album has aged incredibly well. 202(0), welcome to Year Zero
Year Zero is 2022. This song is about a virus called Red Horse Vector
8 years later...
much like all nin stuff it was intense at the time and as the worlds gotten worse all their stuff has just grown in power
As a half Russian half Ukranian who has a mother suffering from Covid during March 2022... I know that feel.
The chaotic electronic programming at 1:59 to the end is so fucking sick. Really incredible performance of this song.
are they actually playing any part of that or is it pre-recorded?
ajmak jerome it’s different to the studio version. It could possibly be alternate takes that they didn’t use in the final version. In all fairness this was created using modular synths which would be very difficult to recreate live.

@@5kN9 they are playing it live but it's samples being manipulated

This comment is badass lol
you know the guy is a true artist when his live stuff is this good
Tru

It's a dream to get to see NIN live before he hangs it up. Hopefully

I love how this song just let's it's organs spill in the last half. Yeah it's just noise but it's madness is just genius in disguise
Red four vector - can be heard spoken in the middle of that chaos, i always likened it to tons of bombs being dropped
Let me tell you about power electronics...
i know this is an unpopular opinion, but Aaron North was my favorite NIN guitar player.
He was so much fun to watch on stage.
Aj Wilks Nice profile pic
Word! He really adds an element of danger
I'm huge fan of Robin Finch but I like Aaron too. He is dangerous yet laid back same time
He had such a chaotic playing style that really transformed NIN live for the better.
Shit man... I am a huge NIN fan, one who gained extreme passion around 2000 while a part of the failed so-called 'rave' scene. This is actually better than the original.
Original?
Gyrbae He means the album version
Most of NIN live is better than album versions..
Just longer
this song reading festival 2007,and two minutes in a group of indie kids stood near us with their fingers in their ears.we were right by a hanging speaker stack.was just awesome sound.ha ha ha

Trent: "I am the Great Destroyyyyeeeeeeeeeeeer"...then my mind explodes.
This is great quality for a live video taken in the audience. You won't find a fan video with sounds this good.
I keep watching this over and over again, still can't get over it.
sooo amazing. this is THE best live performances of GD i've seen. incredible synergy with light spectacle and electro explosion..
The name of this song could be "The Great Fucking epic God Trent".
should be or must be....sorry for my English xD
serantes1375 could or should fits perfectly fine
I saw the concert in St. Louis last year. It was the best show I've ever been to. Come back soon Trent!
without a doubt my favourite song on the album ... and one of my favourite NIN songs out of the lot.
really, has to be admitted this is quite good. I didn't know they were pumping out so much quality in their tour middle of 09.

One of my favorite NIN guitar parts
One of the best albums I've ever heard!!!!
First time I ever heard this song, we had it blasting and everything on the table shook, that was 5 years ago, and it's hard to believe
2 minutes of pure bliss!!!!
After a few years to think about it, I think I prefer this to the album version.
This is so amazing
omg tht must've been so amazin, gonna see nin in 3 short weeks!
This is what I thought the music video would look like! It might be my favorite on the album.
sounds drive me crazy... seriously, trent you're the best
Aaron North is Pure rawsomeness! Have I made a new word?
god damn magic..
and i cant wait to see them again
First time I saw NIN was in 1990 in Boston. Amazing then, and still is .
You r never too old to find inspiration in younger artist
actually that what makes trent stay fresh
so... this is more like the electronics from middle early 90's inspiring
This video is even better after they uploaded it
love this
Awesome!!!

God damn it I wish I could see them live just once more...
great destroyer! coool stuff and lights. great industrial music

To all those imagining that this is Dubstep, Please Note THIS IS NOT DUBSTEP, IT'S INDUSTRIAL.
MY FAVORITE SONG
best piece of electrical music i ever heard:O!
Love!!!
NIN haves the best live shows !
he is the master of all that was, is, and will be
thanks NIN!!!
I love this type of music. Heavy, dark electronic. Any suggestions for other bands/music like this?
aphex twin if you’re more into electronic, tool if you’re more into rock/metal.
Incubus and or Melt banana.
Their sound design on some of their albums are amazing.
Container
Circle of dust, but he's more cosmic and sometimes metal'ish. But he was my bridge to NIИ. Same with Blue Stahli
I know this is 13 years old but, Skinny Puppy for sure.
i couldnt agree more!
As awesome as a full NIN ensemble rocking the house may be (and is), I really wish I could have (and hopefully may yet still) see(n) a stripped down, electro-based session like this. Unbelievable.
I keep watching this video! Just epic!
Glad I saw this alive too! Fuck yeah!
So fucking glad I saw them live atleast once!
Lights In The Sky Tour 2008 in Nashville, TN.
Yessssss !!!!
Me too!!!
Besides, I am doing the same with the show in Las Vegas in December 2008, where I went! It was amazing!!
september 07, nin+unkle in Tel Aviv
rocked my world
Thank u Mr. Reznor..for my very existence..u have always got me thru..thank u. #Alienfrequency
that's so true, that remix is just amazing.
this is so much better than the studio version
Who said NIN isn't industrial? It's true that Reznor didn't start the genre (Skinny Puppy was IMO, as someone else's already written), but he was responsible for making the genre what it once was: the best fucking music ever. Nine Inch Nails is the icon of industrial rock.
i just dream of seeing these guys live, goddammit
Anyone remember when they put Happiness In Slavery sounds in the mix at the end?
And to think we we're gonna get that back on the setlist :(
Full body goosebumps with that drop. Gotdam
he is the master of industrial music
Oh my god !
the light's war !!
Trent you're an animal
Simply fucking incredible.
Oh, he sang "to murder everything" ...!! I always sang it as "tomorrow everything"... makes sense to me either way, though ☺️
I always thought it was tommorow everything too
@SplinkyStudiosFilms Yes but in this song he use a drum machine. Vocal harmony can be with software like autotunes, but here they are 3 components sing this part for make it.
OHMYGOD
Daaaammmmn!!!!
GOING TO SEE THEM IN MARCH~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
In a couple songs they also use a theramin. That's a pretty funky instrument. I've seen it used in songs like "just like you imagined".
1.50
Trent: 'wait, it's buffering...'
The silence in the audience, reminds me of the end of the back to the future scene when Marty plays the Johhny B Goode song.
thats a good point!!!
Welcome to the 2016, guys... It's better to be the Hammer than an anvil.
Welcome to the 2021, guys... It's better to be the Hammer than an anvil.
Everything.
crushed me bits
good for you
Does anybody know where I can find the version of this song with that sample from Screaming Slave in it?
so much truth!
I NEEDED to see 1:35 live
this just gives me the chills! fuck yeahr
my parrot is learning this part!!
I am a kid today and I have Trent Reznor, he's still around and making great music.
I was there in Stockholm. Great concert, but I felt bad for the Trent (and the band) that the venue wasnt full. Deserved better.
Shame he never came back =(
This performance looked fucking insane!
I feel your pain, dude.
holy shit
Wonder how that whole break sequence was prepared, was it all made on the spot with hardware/plugins or just a bunch of precut loops being fired via some launchpadesque controller. My bet is loops going through some additional FX
Don't worry. The dull modern mainstream music these days isn't stopping me from getting NIN's entire discography.
I thought we got a HD version of it :(
Wow, the 2013-14 version was so much better live. Trent stepped up the stage production big time. Hope it only gets better from here on out.
Trent, please, play this song when you come to Madrid next month. P-L-E-A-S-E!
I'll buy two BD copies of whatever this is included on. great stuff.
THE GREAT DESTROYER SOUND SOLO = THE BEST FUCKING THING EVER
cool
Ah cool :)
I saw him down in Florida this past July and it was one my best days in years. I had a blast :D
The light show was no way as cool as this, though. Very typical. But Trent wore white pants, so was a sight in it's self LOL
i can see his potential
