Today's video is all about reading deeper, reading more critically and analysing books! I wasn't sure what angle exactly to take with this video--there are quite a few videos out there already that explain how to analyse books or literature, and how to read deeper, so today I wanted to cover the two areas I personally find really interesting: narratology and poetics.
I took separate courses on these topics during my post grad (the first being 'Advanced Poetics' and the second being titled just 'Narratology'); of course, I'm not in any way an expert! I have a grad dip in creative writing and did creative writing/English during my undergrad as well. I just love these topics and wanted to have a chat about them.
Analysing literature is one of my favourite things in the world (but I do also mention in this video that literature is everything--from YA fantasy to fanfic to Shakespeare).
If you'd like another video on analysis and writing craft, maybe on how I annotate books, please let me know💛

GUYS WE MADE IT TO 100k SUBS AND MY SILVER PLAY BUTTON JUST ARRIVED 😭😭 SO I'M GOING TO DO A CELEBRATORY VIDEO / Q&A. If you'd like to be a part of it, please hop over to Instagram stories: instagram.com/christyannejones ✨
A note on this video! Despite people frequently requesting writing craft videos, I've always been hesitant to post videos like this because I'm always hit by a TERRIBLE onslaught of imposter syndrome whenever I consider doing it. I'm not in any way an expert. I studied creative writing as part of my undergrad and then I did a grad dip in creative writing as well. I did want to make this video, however, because I love analysing books and I'm having a lot of fun atm getting to analyse our monthly book club picks over on Patreon.
Please let me know if you like this video, and if you want more writing craft videos, analysis videos, or even a video on how to annotate books, etc.
Take care guys. Enormous love and thank you endlessly for 100k 😭💛

Such a useful resource tool. I read a lot of classics and am familiar with some aspects of analysis such as allegory and symbolism and rhythm. Having the other things explained was very helpful. I will be rewatching this video several times to aid in a deeper understandingly of some of the books I read. Fabulous content. More videos like this please.

I’d LOVE to learn more about analyzing books. It’d be interesting if we all read a book together that has great examples of most of these themes and writing styles and, in a video, broke them down together. Almost like a book club but more in depth. I want to learn how to read between the books lines and get the most information out of them as I can. My reading right now is very surface level. I read the books as is but I have trouble recognizing the deeper meanings.

I myself am a postgraduate on English and Literature, and a big nerd of narratology and any device concerning narratives. I highly agree with authors such as Lacan, for instance, on how language and narratives create reality. And I find highly interesting how fun can be tracing this not only through instances of literature but also through discourses on real life! It indeed fosters critical thinking and enriches the reading experience of a piece of writing and of the world!

Yes! More of this! I never really understand fiction, like why some characters do stuff for the sake of plot, or that plot is more important than making it realistic or interesting. Or why there should be conflict or some kind of transformation. It's all so vague for me. So nice to hear about it in an accesible way :D
