  • WELCOME TO THE NEXT GENERATION OF HARLEY-DAVIDSON® INFOTAINMENT
The BOOM!™ Box GTS infotainment system is a sleek touchscreen design with glass from edge to edge. But there’s even more beauty in the way it works. It’s fast. Compared to the previous generation infotainment system, it cuts start-up time in half and route calculation is quicker than ever before. Operation is simple with three key buttons: Navigation, Phone, and Music. There’s also a new back button added to the right-hand control, and a new quick jump feature allows easy access to nav, audio, and vehicle information

Just bought a 2019 CVO Limited and have been learning a lot on the BOOM Box system. Been having issues and they upgrade to software and finally got the blue tooth headsets to pair. Still haven't figured out the contact sync odd ball things happening. The dealer was totally up to speed for the 2019 system. The online manual for the BOOM it self is huge. Don't know why they don't give it out with the bike. Cost $20 for a hard copy. After what I spent for the CVO you'd think they would have included it.
Anyway I thought some of my findings might help others.
So it's great that you can get Apple car play by plugging it your phone. But be aware that the compartment on the CVO limited where the connecter is will NOT fit the large apple phone like my 6 plus. So now I've got to figure out some place to mount the phone and run the cable to it. I'm thinking I'll get a little lower fairing bag and will put the phone there and run the cable up. Short sighted design that if they programmed all that was needed for car play that you can't actually store the phone there.
One other note on the CB. We tried for a long time to hook up my headset to the HD CB and was able to transmit but couldn't receive audio. Just confused us. Turns out the bike actually have to be running for the CB to fully function. Not for the other older bikes. But for my 2019 that's the case.
Finally a shout out that I just got back from a trip actually tried to stop there at Owens but it was closed on Sunday. Surprising as the Seattle stores are all open. Any way I came home and found this review. Found it very informative.

Thank you for the nice review of this system. The GTS was a major reason why I purchased a new bike. The previous 6.0 system was better than the previous nothing offered. This system is comparable to what is offered in high end automobile systems. I wish the wire headset interface module was included, but there are a few frugal options out there if you need to go cheap.
I expected a few complaints, but that is normal for owners of Harley Davidson’s.

So if you get the new bluetooth headsets on HD website , you can finally use call feature and voice commands for station change and Nav intro features ?
And do you have to RIP the fairing off to add things , and how about XM radio ?
For a $27,500 vehicle XM should simply need a subscription to work.
Indian motorcycle just released a newer bluetooth nav system with 100 watts stereo.

I don't think this system is so great. I just bought a 2021 CVO Street Glide and it can't even tell me where I live. It says my house is on the right when it is on the left. Also my H-D dealership show it being on the other side of the highway. And seems that is the nav system, if it says things are on the right look left, if it says left then look right. So i spent 47,000 + for people to tell me to use my phone for the navigation system. And yes i have the latest update. Dealer did it just a week ago.

Thanks for the nice review. I still have many specific questions but that's beyond the scope of your presentation. I ride a 15 FLTRUSE with the option WHIM. I have done many long multiday trips. The Boom is mine is a sorry piece of crap. I use it even with the poor quality maps, inaccurate POIs and get by. I use my Android phone which is waterproof as the real authority on the road. I am very disappointed with the original Boom and that it took 5 model years for this improved version that even at double speed of the old one, is still a snail. Apple support is nice but why not Andriod Auto? The UI changes are nice improvements and visability was seriously needed. I can always see my phone and to get an improved phone I don't need to buy a whole motorcycle. Ok end of venting.

One thing I hate about my new Harley (2020 Ultra LImited) is the fact that it always defaults to the radio at startup. My Indian Limited and any car I ever had remembers I was streaming music from my phone via bluetooth and at startup plays no audio until the phone syncs up and it continues right where I left off. Is there a way to make this thing default to my last audio source or at the very least default to bluetooth audio? I NEVER play the AM/FM radio...ever. So I really hate that some commercial starts playing at a very loud level (yes...I love to play my music loud) at startup and I'm having to turn it down OR turn it down before I shut the bike off.

I have this system on my 2019 road glide special. After the initial awe, I’ve come to find it’s pretty much worthless. You need the whim and the HD sena to make it work as Harley-Davidson markets it. As of this date you don’t need an HD tattoo to make the system work. The whim is not an easy install requiring removal of the fairing and being flashed. Other than the am and fm tuner what good is it? The phone is doing all the work if I’m using Apple car play. Harley could of left an open slot in place of the stereo that an iPhone could snap into with a lighting connector that would go to an amplifier and speakers. The gauging features could be controlled with traditional gauges or an app on the iPhone. Not hating on the system or HD, they’re a business they have to make money. I just believe if all these extras are needed to make the features of the system work, it should just be included with the bike and just increase the price.

    • @josephpurcell1182
      @josephpurcell1182 Před 5 lety

Jim Beam there are simple not really to expensive alternative to the WHIM and SENA Headsets. Add a DIN microphone connection next to the console, and use a short microphone. Does not even need to be flashed.
Also the WHIM is not a very difficult install, there are videos available on CZcams. I installed it on a FLHXS and the dealer flashed it at no cost.
I own a 2019 with this system. It’s definitely a nice improvement from the previous system, which was a million times better than what they previous nothing that was available.

Joseph Purcell The point is for $28000 the bike should come equipped with it. I don’t want a brand new expensive motorcycle being taken apart to install something that should come from the factory. Would you pay extra to have your dash torn apart on a brand new car to get the Apple car play to work?

My infotainment System on my 2016 Road Glide Ultra CVO is more capable with the headset of my choice. The new GTS system has some more engine details like miles since last service, MPG, and more. However to get the full use of the Coms or headset feature with the GTS, you must purchase the WHIM at like $300 and the Harley Davidson branded Sena headsets to get stereo sound, both left and right speakers. You can use a headset other than the HD Senas, but you will only have mono sound, one speaker working. Also to note, when you bring your bike in to have the infotainment system “flashed” all they are doing is plugging into the USB connector loading the options menu and clicking “enable” or “disable” on the different options, press save and disconnect. Takes less than 5 minutes, unless they have a new firmware update which can take a little longer. Most dealerships will charge for this so called “flash” at a minimum of 30 minutes of labor. My opinion, all these options should be selectable in the menu of the infotainment system. Let the customer decide what they want on or off. On the options that could cause damage to the speakers with options with added amps, the system should be set up to notify the user that damage to the speakers could occur if enabled without an amplifier installed properly. Acknowledge the caution message and continue on with your day. It still boggles my mind that HD went backwards with the Bluetooth protocol on this system to require a Bluetooth s as adapter to allow Bluetooth headsets to work, whereas the older system was already setup for it.

Can it play music from a flash drive, or is it strictly phone Bluetooth?

Do you keep a USB cord pulled into your USB plug in? even when not attached to phone? This was causing static on mine, until I removed it.

you show bluetooth connection but it only supports playing music from your phone. The entire unit only supports Navigation and bluetooth paired music out of the box. Nothing else. No Apple Car play, no phone capabilities. For those functions, you need to install a WHIM module, a wired microphone, and use a wired compatible headset kit attached to your helmet in order to make or answer a simple phone call. Same old system in a new package.

Touch the I (info) button in the top right of the screen, there you’ll find the outside air temp. On the pre 19 models it was at your right thumb but not anymore.

. I purchased a sportster from dillion harley in elkorn and the day before harley service went through the bike but screwed up adjusting the spokes and left the rear wheel was 1/4 inch out of true. I get on to go for a ride and the first bump I hit blew the tube. They wouldn't even replace just the tube they claimed the had to replace the undamaged new tire. At the purchase I was told I could buy parts and stuff and add it to the financing. I told them I would order some but if It couldnt be ship to my home I didnt want to order because I lived to far away the parts guy promised it would come to my home that was a lie. The way ot was explained to me Thier service is like all harley. If you spend alot you can expect honest service but if not they dont care that thier poor service might wreck you.

Love the new radio. Old GT is horrible. Sadly harley is missing the mark with my generation and younger, which I thought it was trying to go after. Artificial limitations like which are imposed on this radio and the whim module are just insane. In this you mention to upgrade to the most current headset... that is only partially true. No doubt, the Boom 20 Evo, for music, is the true winner due to its employment of AptX codec. Sadly the Boom 20 Evo (and even the Sena 20 Evo it is made on) fair miserably as communicators compared to the Sena 30K. But sadly the 30K and even the Sena 20 Evo (of which the Boom 20 Evo is made from) are specifically locked out of the whim. They do not get the AADP protocol that is industry standard. They are forced to use HFP, basically telephone mono quality. So the Boom 20 Evo doesn't even have to compete (do you want stereo music? got to get boom 20 evo) . Same thing with this radio. Double-din radio, same mounting, same harness, talks to same BCM (at least for the 18, it is different bcm from 17), same stage 2 amp, same whim module, etc. Sure the XM module changed, but could be several reasons for that, and yes the key cap changed on the right controls, but since its canbus and the button is already only listened to by the radio, thats not why. Maybe the 19 has a sensor for figuring the mpg that the 18 doesnt have (you know, like my 18 only says "OK" for oil pressure versus the actual PSI my friend's 14 gives), but again that isn't really an issue. So then it comes down to either harley doesnt want to allow it on old bikes because, "its a feature" not a P&A of the new bikes (which is stupid, why adopt the double-din standard, its all about changing radios), or they have made the new radio ask the BCM was model year, and if its not 19 then it doesnt work. Despite owning Harleys, and only harleys, for a very long time (82 sportster to my 18 RGS), this new behavior with harley is making me rethink if I want my next bike to be a harley. And I love the pan america, would love to have a livewire.... I'd even pay the $1900 (which is two to three times what similar high-end dash systems cost) for this radio because its waterproof and no other in-dash system is, and retains headset and cb functionality.... but financial costs of trading an 4month old 18 for a 19 just to get the radio is insane bad financial decision. Leaves a horrible taste in my mouth... the only complaint I have with my 18 is something that could be fixed, but harley wilfully chooses not to allow that should have been a no-brainer.
