Play guitar for 5+ years and try to have a 30 min focussed practice session for every day you play the guitar. You'll be able to improvise and have fun in no time! Practice even more and longer and you might get to play close to this level too
@@jimjmcd There are several 1000s of players who are as good as, if not better than John. (Although he is one of the upper blues guys). These 'bedroom players' are unheard of because they don't fall under the type of genre, style, personality that Mayer exudes. He is rather popular with women because he sings somewhat meaningful, relatable lyrics. This markets him as the most followed guitarist on instagram. I'm not expecting another person who plays as good as Mayer to have nearly as much success as him. It is rare in this day and age to see a solo rock-blues guitarist who has a large following of fans, fame and money.
It’s refreshing as oppose to the thousands of CZcams guitar players that edit and get every fucking note perfect. This guy is being REAL and it’s awesome!
Growing up, my older sister always told me to listen to John Mayer because he's such a good guitar player. I finally gave him a chance years ago and was blown away. He is finally starting to get the credit he deserves in the guitar community. Go to a music store and listen when someone plugs in an electric. 75% chance you are going to hear some Mayer.
Well we're the same...lol. It's what I do in my free time too. Maybe it takes 45 minutes to get that lick I was trying to play. But my tascam doesn't lie. I'm close LMAO. Good stuff bro, I got the first 3-4 notes. But trying to emulate your attack with strumming is the real lesson. Up strokes to finish a riff as often as possible will make you sound way better than down stoked.
I love the smile on his face when he grabs a unexpected sound. The freedom to experiment and still sound this great must be a UNBELIEVABLE feeling. Practice, practice, practice...
imagine if SRV or Jimi would have had a cellphone to record/live stream jam sessions. Bascially what we are seeing with this video. Nice of John to have shared these.
I Love Watching you practice. Its really fun. I'm going to download this and steal your licks. I like the smiles when you make mistakes. Very cool and open of you to share everything.
Amazing playing.... I am so humbled. This guy, who could do anything w. his time, practices. I can't even motivate myself to practice for my cover band..
All the pros practice for hours a day. Watch Janek Gwizdala’s videos. He plays bass on a lot of John Mayer’s albums. When the guy isn’t working in the studio, he’s practicing.
Maybe you can't motivate yourself because it's not something you really want to do. People tend to lie to themselves all the time about what they wish they could do, but in the end, in their free time everybody does what they really want to. If it's something you really connect with, you won't have to summon immense amounts of effort to motivate yourself to do it. You'll just do it, because it's what you love to do.
What does John Mayer do in his 'down time' ? ... paint the house ?, fix the gate? ,gardening?, Fix that leaky tap in the laundry ?.... nope... jams guitar ! Love your style.
with he's kind of money some one else can paint the fence and he can paint mine at the same time and i'll play guitar although maybe not quite like this
have to say I just discovered John,s beautiful track " In the blood,,," sorry if i,m late to the party but it blows me away,,amazing,,lyrics,,,great great vocal,,,sweet solo and dreamy ending ,,wow,,,,!! John is the only artist that's made me get back into playing lead guitar after I put it down after 30 years of playing seriously,,,,,,
I really notice mayer’s tendency to bend up that minor 3rd (not so) slightly in this vid. The way he plays with that all the time in ever so subtle ways adds a ton to what makes the sound his own
Since I just play as a hobby, and don't really want to be in a band, I just play to backing tracks almost all the time. It's the most fun I've had in years, and you come up with all kinds of your own stuff so you develop your own sound.
What I love about John Mayer is he knows how to play the target notes of a chord without playing a whole bunch of notes. I hear that Albert King solo feel on the first track. At 12:58 was most enjoyable, when John figures out he's in the wrong key, it's happened to me alot of times. Clarence Gatemouth Brown, John knows his blues history.
Here's a 1-hour compilation of all of John Mayer's guitar tips over the years:

I know. But if play like that, you're just gonna have to put up with the money and the fans. That's the price you pay.

He told us his secret. All he does in his spare time is play guitar

I always dread one person doesn't get it in the replies. Fortunately, that wasn't the case in this instance.
It's great to see him struggling to play a lick then repeating it until he gets it. Inspiring
He was trying to figure out how to play what he was hearing in his head
That's what art is all about man.
I watched that part a couple of times.
He'll never get it right. Soulless.

Never mind that bright glow you see in the distance, it’s just me dancing around a bon fire to JM improvising as I burn all my musical equipment!!

I NEVER get bored with listening to John solo. Amazing.
the simplicity of just jamming along to some music bring out pure happiness in a person - theres a song in there somwhere
The jump blues part was NASTY. Really great stuff, John. Really cool to get to see this.
A true artist at work! A very down to earth fellow and genius! Merci John.
Wow sooooo smooth !!!! That is beautiful !!!!
What a privilege to see John practice and guide by example.
No wonder when John was a kid he had a massive ego, he's a fricking awesome guitarist!

John Mayer makes being a guitar god look so casual.

As always, great watch!
