I can't believe that any of this isn't scripted and staged. It's too perfect, Sascha is a genius.
In the beginning, there are a lot of scripted scenes to get the story going, and throughout the rest of the movie there's some here and there.

It is scripted, Sacha even said it in an interview. True, not like your usual film but they had a script so they knew what to say and do during a scene and they predicted what the people would say. So a lot of improvising still!

I spend a lot of time in Romania, it cracks me up every time that the “Kazakhstan” scenes are filmed in Romania and while Borat speaks his gibberish all the other actors just speak straight up Romanian. This type of humor really plays on lack of worldliness in such a clever way - to paraphrase Rumsfeld, “it’s the things you don’t know that you don’t know that are hard to overcome”

Something that really upsets me is that in Rudy's tweet he mentioned Sacha. Like, the person who should feel bothered and uncomfortable in that situation would be Maria. The fact that he didn't even adress her is really upsetting, because it shows how he's only trying to justify himself and not adress his actions.

Why would Maria be uncomfortable? When you flirt with a man by putting your hand on his leg, saying “let’s go have a drink in the bedroom” and then untuck his shirt, what do you expect will happen? Rudy thought she was a consenting of age journalist inviting that kind of behavior. Again, why would Maria feel uncomfortable, she put herself in that situation. Or at least, Sacha put her in that situation. Then he wants to call out Rudy’s inappropriateness as if that’s not what he was trying to set up to happen.

I think I'm going to be, for a while, haunted by the scene and I wasn't even there. I am so creeped out. No way was what Giulliani do appropriate, innocent or normal. To lie back on a bed, in a room with a young woman who was a virtual stranger, and put his hand down the front of his pants.. Who does that?! You'd say, "Excuse me a minute, I just have to do something with this mic." and you'd, at least, turn away. It was horrifying. I think he was testing her reaction to see if she was up for more.

Did you watch the film?
She was flirting with him the whole interview. Her character was supposed to going after him. That was the whole point of her scheduling to meet him. She doesnt look like a kid, shes a 24 year old woman and they told him she was a reporter. She flirted, kept reaching out and touching his leg. In the film, she never says her fake age to him. So he has 0 reason to think the shes underage. She ask to go to the bed room and have a drink. He helps her take mic off, as far as we know by request because it isn't shown. He sits down, theres a bunch of cuts so we don't know what was said and he says "you can give me your phone number and address, they change camera angles at that moment so we don't see him say it. Just hear it, so we don't know when that was really said and in what context. She untucked his shirt, to pull the mic out. He starts tucking his shirt back and they switch camera angles 3 times so we dont know how long they stretched that part out. Which even so wasnt long. Then Sasha comes in dress in some weird woman outfit saying from what we see for the first time that she is 15 and then proceeds to ask him to have sex with him and she starts asking him to stay and have sex with her. He's like "what the hell" and proceeds to leave.
If yall actually watched the scene and still came to this conclusion I bet you think Chris Angel is a real wizard. No wonder the media has such an easy time playing yall.

I'm from Kazakhstan and I love these films but damn did it totally ruin our reputation lol. Whenever someone asks me where I'm from and I say Kazakhstan almost everyone mentions Borat and then starts asking questions about the film and if it's true. You guys say it helped put us on a map but it didn't really lol. It just made people think we have a hideous country and that we are backwards when in fact we are the developed nation in Central Asia and one of the more developed nations in Eastern Europe (if you count us in Eastern Europe since part of our country is in Europe). Any ways I am grateful at least that movie boosted our tourism for like a couple years but yeah overall in the long run this has done more damage for us lol but art is art and he is free to do it and I am free to laugh and enjoy the films. Double edged sword I guess.

I love people defending Giuliani's behavior about how "normal" is to tuck your shirt and how it was only a few seconds. Leaving aside that normally a person doesn't need to stick his hand all the way to their crotch to tuck a shirt, and that it's still not the sort of thing you'd do in front of a stranger, but... I'm not an American. This movie was literally the first time I saw Giuliani. And I was _creeped out of my mind_ by the whole interview from start to finish. The whole time he had this "grooming", slightly condescending attitude that made it very clear that he was undressing her with his mind and certainly had high hopes of doing it for real.

The interviewer cut off Mari Bakalova - why? She's obviously an immense new talent. She made the film. SBC, well, we've seen him before and he's gifted. But this young lady is, as he said, a revelation.
Most likely cut for time. If they have to go to commercial or cut to another segment, there's not many people they WON'T cut off. This is a longer segment than they would usually designate for something like this anyways.

That was actually overdubbed in after, but according to Borat's editing, she invited him in the movie. He thought she was a reporter, and he never did anything if you watch the actual scene. They untangle their mics, she kept touching him in the interview super flirty, obviously leading on, and except that he obviously enjoyed the attention and flirted back a bit, he made no moves on her in the bedroom. He reached out and patted her side, like you would to a daughter. Those aren't foreplay moves I've ever encountered.

Maria Bakalova is the bravest actress in the history of cinema, no doubt!
Think of how hard it is to do what these two did in the film. They basically have ONE TAKE to get the scene right. Then you consider how uncomfortable, awkward, and in some cases dangerous, the scenes are and it's just astonishing to think they were able to pull all this off. Both should not just get nominated for Oscars, but win.

Sacha wouldn’t cast someone who isn’t great at comedic acting
I honestly could not believe Sacha found an actress that could match his on-the-second wit, especially when they were on Kimmel. Just seeing her be as glued to her character as Sacha is to his was jaw-dropping. The character was like Jason Alexander’s George Constanza. No one else could have played their role.

Its clean, looks professional, and fairly inexpensive place to rent. Reporters often have to travel for interviews and don't have a portable studio that they can use for quick interviews.
Interviews for film and tv happen in hotel rooms quite often. They’re semi-public spaces with neutral design and usually the larger suites have lots of space to set up cameras and lights. Also, there’s built-in security and if you’re doing a rash of interviews, it’s a convenient place to tell guests to go. But in all the years of interviews, I have never ever gone into the bedroom area and the mic-ing up is always done in front of the crew, which is always a mix of men and women.
@@opiatepix this. 'the mayor of the United States' should know better than to go into a secluded area one on one with any female. Any person for that matter. I have a feeling she was flashing herself (when wearing the skirt and sitting directly in front of him, crossing her legs and so forth) during the interview. And of course she was pretending to be a very nervous interviewer and that lowered the mayor's radar. If you watch that scene in the movie it's very obvious they replayed the very minute moment where he was tucking in his shirt to make it look like he was playing with himself. That's the part where they're being even more devious than just the false front on what the interview was actually about.

I just finished the movie, and I have never laughed so damn harder. I literally lost my shit during the doctor scene. Sacha Baron Cohen is a comedic GENIUS. And the actress that plays his daughter is so damn committed. I'm impressed.

Cohen is such a juxtaposition. To go so deep into characters while remaining such a well presenting core person strikes me as exceptional. Most would do what he does and be loopy as a person. He seems to have a very very deep sense of his pillars but is able to completely detach from social norms when adopting a character. A Gem of a human.
