I was talking to a famous MUA who said full coverage foundation is a fairly new phenomenon which seems to have started with young influencers who wanted to cover every flaw with heavy pancake makeup like drag queens. The same thing happened with over down brows with the drag queen influence.
Unfortunately, many influencers are teaching young women to not like themselves and cover themselves as much as possible. It quite staggering when I see someone in person with heavy full coverage and "tin man" highlights. I feel so sorry for that girl. I absolutely know 20 year from now she's going to say "Why didn't someone tell me". On the other hand, it's just makeup and not permanent.

Add an Australian who's traveled a bit through Continental Europe, in STAGGERED at the "American" style makeup! It's HEINOUS! Not natural at all.
It's COMPLETELY focussed on COVERING every imperfection, instead of AMPLIFYING the features you want.
The European ethos of "flaws" = individuality = beauty is completely non existent in American CZcamsrs and Instagrammers!
It's staggering to me how banal, how petulant, how surface-level "beauty" and makeup had become to Americans! 🤦🤫

I always feel weird telling people I use Tatcha primer every day when I don't wear foundation, but this is why. I use it just down the center of my face and it evens everything out. It's also helpful for if I have to dab a bit of concealer somewhere other than under my eyes - like on my nose. No more little dots of concealer where my pores live.

True story: after 👏YEARS of trying to look like the "American" CZcamsrs/Instagrammers (fake everything, duck-lip fillers, eye bag fillers, Botox etc) I embraced my inner European...
I used a (cheap) light coverage powder foundation to "balance" the complexion instead of trying to blanket or with a full coverage foundation.
Added A VERY muted/natural blush (with NO glitter/gold) and A MUTED cool eyeshadow over the lid to emphasise my eyes' natural shape... A lick of waterproof eyeshadow to hold the curl, and a spritz of makeup seeing spray .
Result: the husband Couldn't stop commenting on how beautifuli looked, and asking what (procedure) is had done, and everyone at work ALSO commented on how pretty and elegant and classy I looked!

I just turned 51 and this was a great video reinforcing what I've been discovering by trial & error. I was a full coverage/matte girl due to my oily skin. I have large pores around my nose, center forehead & cheeks along with acne scars & occasional break outs. I've gradually been sheering the coverage & finding a less matte finish is much more flattering. I'm experimenting with mixing a serum with my foundation. Great suggestions & thank your friend for me🙂

Great video, Shelby. One of my all time favorite foundations is the It Cosmetics CC + illumination but it doesn't last a super long time because it's so dewy, I began mixing it with my Wet N Wild Photofocus foundation and now it's absolutely perfect! The same dewyness only is stays longer on the skin and if I set it with my bye bye pores loose finishing powder, it's perfection!

Funny thing is the salesman at MAC tried to talk me into their longwear foundation. He did half my face in each product and was amazed at the difference. When you age, less is more and results in a younger, fresher look.

*One product that really will tighten pores is the Pixi Glow Tonic. If you have dry skin you may only want to use it 2 - 3 times a week (YOU MUST USE A GOOD SPF 30 or more, which you should be doing anyway) if you have normal to oily skin you may be able to use it daily but again, use a good SPF and during nighttime skin care, last step use a good quality oil, like Josie Maran Argan oil or her Divine Drip Sleeping Nectar*

I owe you a huge thanks. I have mature, textured skin with oily t zone AND rosacea, lucky me! I been trying so many different foundations with medium coverage because I need to cover my uneven skin tone and I have found only a couple that work for me that don’t make me look ‘old’ and a grease slick in a few hours. Chanel, Perfection Lumiere Velvet is one, L’Oréal Fresh-ware is another. I never tried a light coverage foundation because I didn’t think it would cover my rednesses. I finally tried the Dior Face and Body. I didn’t think it would work because you have dry skin and you are young. Wow is all I can say. Only need slight touch up after
a few hours. A fan so far.

Excellent info! I still wish I knew how to use the MAC Face & Body! I know you have done a video... I’ve never had a foundation I couldn’t figure out! Haha

Great topic. I can’t stand full coverage products on my face. I do occasionally use a pore filling primer but my foundations are all light to medium or BB/CC creams. Matte is not my 51 year old face’s friend!

What a mind-blowing eye-opening video! I’ve pinned this for future reference. At 61, I’m amazed at how much I didn’t know until recently. Where were you in my life in the 70s when I first started wearing makeup?? Yeah, I know, I know you weren’t born yet! 🤣🤣🤣

I don't have very big pores, but Face & Body makes them look huge and I can't use silicone primers (all of them break me out).
I prefer using good medium (rarely full, these are rarely good) coverage foundations and sheering them out where I can, so I have less product on my skin, thus less texture and better longevity. I do understand why people with perfect skin would like sheer formulas though.

Silicon primers break me out as well. But as a 50 year old who didn't wear sunscreen when I was young... lighter coverage products combined with spot concealing hids texture better than med/full coverage.

Of course we are human and the skin is a living texture,is biology. Nice recomendation...but i never care much about pores, like to have a smooth make-up but the most of the time, don't put any foundation..only a thin eyes pencil line and nude lipstick.I like your videos and recomendations.Greetengs from Europe.

As you said, most pore minimizing primers are silicone based. Then you suggest using a water based foundation. But I always heard that we should match the primer with the foundation (silicon based primer with silicone based foundation and water based primer with water based foundation). Is this true?

I think it truly depends on your skin. I use the make up for ever primer with Mac Face and Body on clients all of the time, and on my friend in the video which is why I was able to recommend from a personal experience. If you find it doesn’t work for you then definitely avoid a water based but keep with the thin texture formula!
