Leather Boot Care | How to Look after Leather Hiking boots

- With some spare time on my hands I gave my Leather boots a bit of TLC.
This video is a run through on Leather boot care, or at least how I care for my Leather boots.
I'm sure there are other ways of looking after your boots, but this is my method.

That's an interesting way of cleaning your boots Dan! I clean my haix boots with the garden hose pipe as soon as I get back from camp and apply Leder-gris water repellent wax oil every so often.

Great video ! I recommend washing the bootlaces with hot water and dishwashing liquid. Hang them over a doorknob or hook and let them air dry overnight. I would also let the boots air dry overnight as well. Apply the dubbin at room temperature and then heat the boots with a hairdryer to melt the dubbin. Much quicker and safer than using an oven. Guys the best outdoors man/woman are those who take care of there footwear after every hike ..
Its discipline of clean footwear will make you keep good care of your gear ..
I drill into my kids after a hike make sure all there kits are clean an ready for use on the next hike ..
It sounds similar to what I use on my leather. I use something called snow coat that is made from beeswax. I get the old hair dryer out. Great video my friend.

To dry the inside of my boots out I have a couple of old socks, half filled with dry rice. I heat them up in the microwave for a couple of minutes, and feed them into the boots. They draw out any moisture, and nasty smells, and I dry them on a rad afterwards. :)
I love your tip to warm up the dubbin first. I'll be doing that from now on!
Incidentally, I usually get black, or dark brown boots, if I can. 'Cos they dry quicker in daylight than lighter boots - it's actually the reason the Model T Ford was painted black, because the paint dried quicker = less cost. ;)
BTW I use Saddle Soap to clean any leather goods I have. I figure that if it's good enough for a horse saddle, then it's good enough for boots and bags.
Thats weird about the paint drying quicker, never heard that before!
@@CampLifeBushcraft Yep, because black absorbs light energy, rather than reflecting it back, it converts into heat energy, making the paint dry quicker (this was long before paint ovens were used, of course).
Thanks that was really helpful. I got some dubbin and put it on a few days ago, and left it for a couple of days but the boots were still a bit sticky, which is why I wanted to see how to do it properly. Your video cleared it up - too much dubbin and everything was cold. I’ll warm the dubbin from now on and put a couple of thin coats rather than smearing it all over !! Thanks

scarpa delta's fresh out the oven with plenty butter on sorry dubbin lol. joking aside mate you gave them a very thorough clean & re proofing. got to look after our most important piece ok kit. I used to use dubbin on my scarpa rangers but it seemed to stop the leather breathing a little so started using grangers G WAX with good results. stay safe mate.
They come up great, I don’t notice how faded and grubby they look until I start cleaning them!

Great advice there Dan. Look after your kit, and it will look after you. I’ve never heard about putting boots in the oven before though. I appreciate it’s on a low heat but do you know whether this might affect the integrity of any rubber components of the boot? Genuine question, not trying to be a smartie! I’ve just bought a similar pair of boots and paid a few quid for them. I was looking for advice on boot care and found your post; thought it was really good! Love your channel mate 😉
I think historically the advice was to put them in the airing cupboard to warm the leather and dubbing, but they don’t really exist anymore due to combi boilers.
I’m no expert so I can’t give a definitive answer but my boots seem none the worse for it.
@@CampLifeBushcraft Thanks Dan. Now that you mention it I seem to recall my older brother doing something similar with his army cadet boots (airing cupboard). I guess the relatively low heat shouldn’t be an issue. Thanks mate 😉
Will the leather lighten over time? I put wax on my new leather hiking boots and they have become very dark, almost black (they were originally a dark brown). I prefer a lighter brown colour
Leather will lighten as the wax wears off.. which means your losing the waterproofing. as to them going darker it depends what product you applied. it would need to be clear wax to maintain the colour. I think some do have some dark colour in them.
@@CampLifeBushcraft the wax that I put in my boots was a yellowish clear wax, are there products that keep the same color on the boot? do you have any recommendations?
Ps the only other thing I would say is, buy dubbin from the shoe repair shop and buy Dan a coffee rather than using the affiliate link to help Bezos avoid yet more tax and fly off to Mars !

Never put your boots in the oven,the glue will lose its structure and weaken the boot…
Did you weather proof them when you first purchased them?
No, I just wore them out the box, never had an issue with them so far.
