My Nan was a hula-girl, demonstrating the hoola-hoops for sale at Woolworths in the late 1950s.

Woolies is our standard go-to supermarket in Australia. We've also got Aldi, Foodland, IGA, Drakes and Coles. I'd go to Aldi mostly for the weekly household products rather than groceries. Foodland, IGA, Drakes and Coles generally lack the quantity, or variety of stock that Woolies has but they stock a lot more Australian and local products than Woolworths.

That's not the same Woolworths as Alan's talking about. It wasn't a supermarket.

Seems like the South African Woolworth's is much more posh than yours was.
Here only rich people shop at woolies and buy tins of tomatoes for 3 times the price than you can get them anywhere else.

Yea that’s the exact opposite to ours. It was part stationers/music shop/newsagent/bookshop/home furnishings/toys/clothes/cafe etc. It was I suppose a super low rent department store that was owned by one company. Part of their problem, they did lots of things badly and didn’t excel at any (other than pick n mix - loose sweets/candy if that doesn’t translate to SA)
