Mt. Kiamo: Bukidnon’s Best-Kept Secret

  • Bukidnon in the island of Mindanao is known to the mountaineering community for two of the most fancied mountain destinations in the archipelago: the Kalatungan Mountain Range and the Kitangland Mountain Range. They are not only home of the tallest peaks in the country, but also very savage and very beautiful. Two weeks ago, I went to Bukidnon to climb a mountain, one that might draw question marks from mountaineers who live outside of Mindanao. I climbed Mt. Kiamo.
Located in Malaybalay City, the jump-off to this mountain is in Brgy. Can-ayan, not more than 15 minutes from the bus terminal. It isn’t too difficult to climb. Guides will estimate that you’ll get to the peak in 5 hours. But most people choose to spend the night in the Sabangan Campsite and only hike to the peak very early in the morning.
I was a bit more intrepid than that: climbed on a weekday and camped on the peak itself. In those two days, my guides and I were the only people on the mountain. It was a precious experience which I think will enrich my life, not only for the adventure that it brought, but for the sheer excitement of leaping into the unknown.
Mt. Kiamo is known for its relative ease, and by that I mean it isn’t hard to get to. The entire mountain is part of the ancestral domain of the Higa-onon Tribe of Bukidnon. One other aspect that makes this place unique is because of a tropical carnivorous plant that’s endemic to the mountain: the Nepenthes pulchra.

I’m from Manila so I had to fly to Davao and take a bus to Malaybalay. Apart from that, it’s quite cheap. The guide was 600 a day and the entrance fee was 200 per person. From central Malaybalay to the jump off the transportation was just 150 pesos.

8:30 That's very sad :( tourists/hikers should be educated to respect these plants, to keep their distance, and the guides should strictly remind them. It takes 5-10 years for them to flower and only took 1 year to kill them, that made me really sad and it shows really the negative attitude of Filipinos. Imagine how beautiful it would have looked if they were just left alone. Modern Filipinos have really lost respect for nature. Hopefully, the chieftain can protect those plants moving forward. Nice blog though, thanks for sharing.
