  • Ofwat has announced customer bills are proposed to increase on average by £19 over the next 5 years. Feargal Sharkey tells Kate and Ed that 'Ofwat is to blame and should take responsibility.'
    But Senior Director for the Price Review at Ofwat Chris Walters says there will be an investment package in water and wastewater services.

      Nah. It just needs overhauling and to be given powers that make a difference. I would be quite surprised if he's still in charge of ofwatt in 6 months time. So far it looks like labour intend to change it all. Giving them powers to withhold bonuses and hold CEO s and the like legally responsible individually. I don't know if Labour intend to legislate so that the companies can't just add their fines to our bills but I think that they most definitely should

      ​@@PJH13The government should penalise shareholders and CEOs, make them cough up what was not theirs to take in the first place. That should help raise some funds.
      Also government should take possession of majority shares at an appropriate point in the future with no compensation to shareholders for part taking in this criminal scheme and scam.

      ​@@thecrimsondragon9744 This is a hugely dangerous idea that would make generations of UK citizens poorer. The UK being a safe place to invest, with respect for the rule of law is undoubtedly the most important reason that we are a wealthy nation. Taking shares in a business without compensating owners fairly would a) be illegal under international law b) make companies very reluctant to ever invest in the UK again and c) give license every country where a UK business owns assets to do the same. For example Thames Water is 1/3rd owned by the Canadian public employees retirement fund. Canada is one of our closest allies, how do you think they will react if we try to steal from their pensioners?

      Mortgages have gone from 1% to over 6%. Landlords are forced to sell, reducing availability, resulting in higher rents.

    Personally, I think that everyone should refuse to pay the increase, until the water boards have sorted out the complete and utter mess they have created. All bonuses should be stopped and every outlet should be monitored for any discharge. When and only then should consideration be given to an increase in bills. Oh and the regulator should be sacked for allowing the water boards to get away with their appalling behaviour!

    There needs to be threat of custodial sentences and proper enforcement - fines just get put on bills. They are a monopoly and eventually need to be brought back into public hands - but not by taking over their debts.

    I've worked as an electrical designer on many of these sites.
    All the water companies need to do is to make much deeper storm overflow chambers, it's the lack of storm overflow storage that causes the overflows and leaks. In a climate that is getting much wetter in the UK, it's a recipe for disaster if not done! 👍

      Tory and labour. Blair almost single-handedly privatised a good portion of the NHS. And when the banks failed, it was labours light touch as they called it, that was partly to blame. Thatcher was the ultimate ghoul but Blair comes a close second, and at least thatcher told you what she was doing, Blair just betrayed us.

    The billions lost to foreign 'investors' in dividends, inflated directors' pay - the revolving door between Ofwat managers who then go to work for Water Companies is what should be looked at.

    Ofwat fine the companies but allow the companies to recoup that by increasing bills. So it's the customers who pay the fines whilst the directors and shareholders get off scott free.

    TW dump sewage because its cheaper than processing it, they get a small fine just so ofwat can virtue signal. why would TW not do this, good business sense, and protects dividend payouts to share holders.

    well done to TW, can load the company up on debt for day to running, instead of using revenue\income which you cream off in dividends, you get to a state that would bankrupt any normal small or large business, but ofwat step in and just get the public to bail you out. can't really fault TW for being able to get away with this!!!

    It won't for me that is for sure, and I will be investing in a water filter system that can take 10 litres of water and turn it into 40 minutes of pure shower water, and with a UV filter later the recycling can go on for even much longer, some say infinite!

    the goverments allowed pumping of raw sewage into rivers and the sea for years it is a goverment fault issue not the water companies, no-one stopped to think of the damage that might be caused, profits for shareholders were the only consideration, it has been people like Edd who are to blame for this enviromental catastrophey.
