This was a big deal. He was the new guy on the show and really wasn't getting much feedback and what he did get was sort of luke warm. This apology worked! He got more support from everyone, and it paid off, didn't it guys!
I remember as a kid when Murry did this. No one thought he would become the Icon that he did. Great Guy.
i was a young man when this played live that Sat Night, i can recall it. Love BM! From 2nd City to a Legend.
I remember him doing this live and it was the first time I realized he was a special talent
For a long time, Belushi was the larger-than-life one people mythologized and were in awe of. At some point, Murray passed him up.
Same could be said for Clint Eastwood on rawhide or Steve McQueen on Wanted Dead or Alive. Love Bill just been watching a little too many encore westerns the past ten years thinking the same of them
Actually he was a dick.
Seems funny enough. I hope he sticks with it, I think he'll make it.
I don't know. I'm not sure about the new guy is going to be as good as the original cast.
It was hard for him breaking in. I didn't think he was funny at first. But this sketch was a good idea because it was both funny and made him seem human. Things got better after that.
This is Bill's Checkers Speech. Things did get better after this. Lorne was thinking about firing him. Hard to believe now.
I remember seeing this live, and when he said "I'm a Catholic" I busted out laughing.
Was you in the studio
Bill Murray made a little known movie called the Razors Edge taken from the book The Razor's Edge. This movie showed the real range that Bill Murray has. A must-see for all Bill Murray fans
I'm still not sold on whether this guy is going to make it. But who knows. Maybe one day he'll be considered more funny and more likeable than even Chevy Chase....
can anyone even imagine Bill Murray having to do that??? The World does not Comprehend this.
Bill Murray, you are a true icon and you have proven over and over again that you’re acting range in both comedy and drama is incredible. I watched you when I was young- -as young as five years old I was able to stay up on Saturday night and watch these skits and with you guys. It’s nice to see that everything worked out for you… and you sure are funny.
he needs to get back to being funny. his older borther was on the show too you might recall.
Thank you. BM
Bill & Norm are the all-time top two IMO.
I think Phil Hartman belongs right up there.
Unbelievable how young he looks! Also, great that he became one of he most successful guys from SNL!
its not the look, he was young.
Billy has always been a comedic genius in my book. He’s funny even trying to be serious.
I'm straight. But I'm openly gay for Bill Murray
@Jim McCracken if Bill Murray is the dogs owner...
Speaking of dogs, you definitely don't own a dog house.
a rare moment of humility
OMG Bill looks soooo young and slim 🤣🤣🤣 its like watching your dad back in time !!!! Btw my dad and bill are the same age and had the similar hairstyle lol
Damn I love the Internet. I'm currently reading Saturday Night and I'm on the "Billy" chapter and they mention the build up and ramifications of this speech. Couple of clicks and now I can see it for myself
Pat Tanackered Same here.
Woop same. Also with other skits discussed like Kristen Wigg's goodbye.
I came here from the book “Wild and Crazy Guys”. It’s a book about comedians of the 80s and it talks a lot about SNL. The intro is about the Chevy Chase and Bill Murray fist fight.
And it's the actual SNL account that uploads it. This is what all media companies should do - make that footage available for free. It's decades old, don't horde it. Let people get the benefit of it, however niche it is.
I Love You - Bill Murray!!!!!!!
‘Big Bad Book Of Bill Murray’ brought me here.
It's bill fuckin Murray
Oh Bill, you're funny, in fact HILARIOUS, without even trying
Hey Egret you could learn a thing or two from this video!
Most underrated comment right here!
Yup, I'm not Norm got me here too.
That's what got me here. Wish he would have kept norm macdonald live going
@@kyuiopfghjkkk7613 it’s Eget, like the bird.
RIP Norm
very good
you got my sympathy vote
This is really his entire brand in a nutshell. Every like pinnacle moment in a Billy Murray movie is really similar to this speech. A complete loss of all confidence. These kind of demotivational speeches like "It just doesn't matter" in Meatballs or "We're mutts" in Stripes all come from the same place: "I have nothing left to give other than the honest truth that I'm not really that special."
I think everyone can relate to that and find the humor in that underdog nature. This complete confidence in the concept of having nothing to lose is really the embodiment of what this guy is and did for comedy. He made some of the most depressing speeches that somehow made you feel uplifted. Truly hilarious.
Bill Murray on SNL in 1977 was life changing for me. I'm still laughing.
Man, he looks and sounds alot like Peter Venkman from ghostbusters!
His voice sounds younger before he even became Venky 😂
🤔
Norm spoke about this on his podcast. It's insane to think of Bill Murray as the new guy nobody thought was funny.
A lot of people resented Murray because he was Chevy's replacement.
My friends labrador is called Bill Murray.
Dude's a legend
a few episodes later he created the lounge singer skit and that turned things around for him
I always heard about this sketch but till today I never watched it. Awesome
Love this!
I guess the apology worked.
bill Murray is one funny guy
Nowadays, Bill Murray is more famous than the guy he replaced.
Kevin Healey Better liked maybe, but more famous?
@@randycunningham1952 Easily. Chevy Chase made dozens of films...of which, only "Fletch," "Vacation," and "Caddyshack" are remembered. Bill Murray did "Caddyshack," "Meatballs," "Stripes," "Ghostbusters," "Groundhog Day," "Lost in Translation" and "Zombieland." More people remember Bill than Chevy.
@@randycunningham1952 Bill Murray is definitely more famous than Chevy Chase
That’s not true. Anyone with a brain remembers both for their iconic movies.
I would say they are equally famous, but Bill Murray has had the better career than Chevy
Its more than just being funny. A cat can be funny. He has a hidden something no other comedian has. Eddie Murphy would never apologize for a bomb and they all do it from time to time
Eddie Murphy can't STOP apologizing for Beverly Hills Cop 3.
As a teenage girl in 1978 i had the BIGGEST crush on Bill Murray whadda hunk ♥
If Chase had stayed, then SNL probably would never have made it to 1980.
And let's not forget, if Eddie Murphy didn't join the cast in 1980, it would've been canceled.
Belushi and Murray, the best the SNL ever had.
And Radner. And Sarducci.
And Aykroyd
early 90's was hard to best
@@TheaterPup Aykroyd definitely. So much talent and so underrated.
This is the last time you ever saw Bill Murray nervous.
A mining town called Wilmette 😂🤣😅
Billy🖤
He is funny and I'm not even a Catholic.
Thanks bill for memories mate
The only thing he should apologize for is Garfield
He hated Garfield, lol
Bill❤️
Hilarious 🤣
this more painfully true than just a comedy bit....bill was not liked when he joined SNL so the boss said go out and do this bit to camera...bill ain,t being funny here , he,s trying to make know him and like him
I make know him... he funny. I clean up, ok?
Uh...no.
I bet this guy “makes it” one day.
This guy? Never.
Big fan
Meanwhile, nobody from the present cast apologizes.
Who's got the most credibility out of anyone whose every been on SNL? yeah you BM!
Luke Null needs one of these
Liam Humel is he still on the show?
was this the 2nd year? did he join at the beginning of that year?
Billy first appeared in Nov 76 and became a regular in Jan of 77.
Epic #ProfessorFate 🤙🏽
I first knew Bill Murray from the original Ghostbusters.
9-2020 - 👍
Classic
🖤
Was this just a bit or is there some context to why he's saying this. It's all true btw.
I heard in a documentary that by this stage, Bill was copping a lot of flack because Chevy Chase had just left after only 1 season and Bill was his replacement. Chevy left at the peak of his popularity on the show, that people only saw Bill as "Not being as funny as Chevy." So this was a "real" apology as it were, but for comedic effect to get Bill's popularity up.
Isn’t he the guy that plays peter venkman in ghostbusters
No that was Chevy Chase.
What no it was the guy beetle juice
yep
nigga no. Tell me you joke
Yes, that's is the character he played in Ghostbuster I & II
Wilmette, a small mining community north of Chicago.
i now know where he gets his moxy, "i'm one of 9 children". you have to be on your toes with that many siblings running around.
bill murray might be at your wedding, you never know.he's been known to crash weddings
I can’t find OMAGOLLI tribe skit!
Feel for you man
Why don't you guys have the Swill commercial up?
Bill knows that sincerity is everything. That's why he fakes it so good!
1:56 ouch they laughed
He is an SNL icon matter of fact just about every comedian on SNL is an icon in Jesus he's funny as hell
An Jesus new you weren't Jewish
I support you ...let's take in a Cubs game
Bob warlay
Does anyone else here on internet land think Bill looks older than 27?
I always thought he looked older than he actually is
People just reached their 30s faster back in those days.
His face looks a lot like a similar age Ed O Neil.
May 12th,1977? That was a Thursday.
It's supposed to be March 19, 1977
I can only imagine the Gamatria involved in this but what disturbs me most is this is very significantly involved in my timeline and in my rhelm. Look at the date it aired and check any weird shit that came up in Yakima Washington in a neighborhood called Fairbrook built on property owned by the Dupont family who owned Congdon Castle literally a stones throw away. The castle is on Nob Hill. As kids we would run through the orchard and peer at the castle through the trees. What blows my mind is how long it took for all our memories to come back. WWG1WGA
Such a shame Bill was such a failure. He could have had a big career, too bad he screwed it up.
Murray came into his own less than one month before this, on 4/16/1977, with his Nick Summers lounge singer routine. This happened after they gave him 5 minutes to do whatever he wanted. Before this, he struggled remembering lines, and even messed up a punch line as a guy who only said FIVE words [he said seven].
He was seriously floundering. And now, here we are.
I actually am required to call my sisters every year on their birthdays and sing to them as Nick the Lounge Singer. It's an absolute hoot!
Luke Null circa 2018
billy and danny haha murray and akroyd when they were younger.. not young just younger.i was born this same year 1977!
Gilda Radner was so cute.
Why in the hell did the audience not laugh at the joke about the girl going home with Dan Aykroyd instead?
Norm sent me
Hiliarous😊
Lorne should've had Luke Null do this
Bill wishes he was half the man Norm was
This is 100% true he was not funny at first he was just goofy and there's nothing he did was funny it was just stupid I didn't think he was going to make it at all I was super young but I do remember
Love the older SNL shows. In the past few years the show has gone downhill. Waiting for a Biden parody, and a Hillaria Baldwin parody...
Did this guy manage, to become funny?
Watch him in "Caddyshack," "Meatballs," "Ghostbusters" and "Groundhog Day." Yes, he became really funny.
I'm not sure. I think he became a scientist.
@@sideshowsniket A scientist... who was more like a game show host.
is the first appearance on tv?
why would he apologising for previous appearances if it was his first appearance? that doesn't make any sense. i know you posted this 2 years ago but get back to me we'll talk about it
He didn't start out well at the beginning of SNL
jojopuppyfish It's true. He auditioned for SNL 2 or 3 times, the first one didn't go well because Bill was nervous and shakey on auditioning for Lorne Michaels and doing in front of him and most of the SNL directors and cast members. Bill never gave up on trying to get on a spot for SNL, and did whatever it took to get better at performing in front of the SNL cast and crew. He had a lot of support during this, Dan Aykroyd had this feeling that Bill Murray had this gift of making people laugh and needed him to be on SNL. Other cast members who supported Bill Murray were Gilda Radner, Jane Curtin, and John Belushi, they actually wanted Lorne to give Murray another chance. When they found out that Bill made it into the SNL cast, they were extremely proud for him to make it
You can’t say he didn’t earn his prima donna status.
Chevy was too smug. He always looked like Chevy in all the skits. Bill had more range.
If you want people to give you money because of your religion, then you're in the wrong religion Bill.
I feel like they could copy this word for word and have Pete Davidson say the speech.
Except Pete Davidson actually isn't funny.
@@adam8323 opinion. not sure what you are basing this off. imo Murray wasn't all that funny either really, not making that up to be argumentative other than the nerds I didn't really enjoy him that much just like other than chad I don't enjoy Pete much...
@@soonerthanlater8206 just basing it on personal opinion. I actually agree Bill Murray isn't near the top of my list as far as making me fall over laughing. I feel like he was never that make you roll on the ground laughing type of comedy though. More of just an entertaining comedy that gave you a chuckle, put a smile on your face, and was a good performer. Pete Davidson overall I just don't find very entertaining in anything I've ever seen.
@@adam8323 in the words of Petes' character chad "Okay". I am not defending Pete just making the joke, that's all this was just a stupid commentary based off modern people and Pete apologizing to us but seems hes taken the approach of berating the opposition instead he's very much "I'm funny you have bad taste if you think otherwise" type approach ... Petes not the humble guy he should be, imo Murray has that for him he was always a team player and good for understanding his place.
600th like
I remember how un-funny he was.
He needs to apologize for the last couple of decades. I wish that he’d remember that he is Bill Murray.
This is officially remembered as an awkward skit and it's nothing of the sort; it's typical Bill Murray, and the audience clearly enjoyed it
It wasn't typical Murray at the time.
